So here we go again, clearing out the fuel lines as I get ready to leave the site on autopilot for a few days. A few things of note recently:
When I return I'll look into replacing the Sony TV that I sold so that I can play Halo 2 and continue the Impressions series. I'm actually aiming for an Optoma H-31 projector because it is a reasonably priced DLP projector that's not too large or heavy, has decent specifications and handles component input via RCA plugs and also has a DVI port. If anyone has any better suggestions, please let me know; I've been comparing various units online now for several days and this newly-released unit seems like the best choice.
Today's news summary:
Microsoft is recalling over 14 million of the power cables for its Xbox game console, representing more than half of all those sold worldwide to date and including all those made for continental Europe prior to January 2004 and those for the rest of the world prior to October, 2003.
About 1 in every ten thousand cables are likely to fail, and so far seven users have experienced burns from faulty cables and 23 users observed minor smoke damage or burn damage to property.
Owners can request a new power cable from the Xbox website, which should arrive in 2-4 weeks. You'll need your serial number and manufacture date to order the cable. Until then owners are advised to " turn off their Xboxes when not in use". (Don't people do that anyway? My question is, why the year delay for the recall if MS already knew of the fault and had corrected it by late 2003 in one market and early 2004 in another? --Ed)
The bane of my existence, the news roundup, is back again. Lodged between the rough incisors of the news roundup beast are the following remnants of its recent meals:
Joystiq today points to supposed specs for the Xbox 2's GPU gleaned from neowin.net, and a debate over backwards compatibility (also discussed here once upon a time) ensues.
The nominees for the Game Developers Choice Awards of 2005 are out, and the audio team for Halo 2, including Marty "The Elder" O'Donnell, C Paul Johnson, and Jay "Man Behind the Man" Weinland are up for kudos. (Oddly enough, there's no separate category for music, and Halo 2 is up against an eclectic selection of games, ranging from Doom 3 to GTA to Katamari Damacy, so if Bungie doesn't win this one, it probably won't be Marty's fault, since it seems that music isn't the only factor under consideration here-- Ed.)
[image:9078 left hspace=5 vspace=5 border=0] SPOnG has posted the following image, which is supposed to be the first-ever photo of the logo for Microsoft's upcoming sequel to the Xbox gaming console. (I guess it isn't going to be called Xbox 360 after all, if this is legitimate --Ed.)
I guess this news story pretty much invalidates the UNSC's "don't ask, don't tell" policy. I suppose Jacob is spinning in his grave... and that's a disturbing image given what he looked like last time we saw him.
You've beaten the game, you're stuck on dialup, and your entire neighborhood is populated with Sony fanboys. How do you get your Halo fix now? Play it again, Sam. But how replayable is Halo 2 compared to the original? That's the question that the latest Narc's Retort dances around and perhaps even eventually answers.
