Rapture has relaunched a temporary version of the old COERCE.net website to announce that the redoubtable Halo PC server will be back for a few months' stint.
XerxdeeJ posted in the HBO forum that his Halo blog, Tied the Leader, is back following the author's wedding. (Also, belated congratulations to Pinkuh who also did the deed this month-- I just saw the announcement in my XBL mailbox after a long hiatus--Ed.)
...at least, this one better be a lie. Joystiq points out that IMDB's entry for the upcoming big-screen Halo movie now indicates it will be directed by Uwe Boll, despite assurances of late from Bungie that the list of potential directors was strictly A-list. Many commenters on the Joystiq story point out that information at IMDB about projects in progress has historically been inaccurate.
UPDATE: HBO has an item that quotes Joseph Staten of Bungie as reiterating that this is not true. No director for the Halo movie has been chosen.
Joe "Dyslexia" Renaud has posted a writeup of the MLG Seattle tournament, som by IGS. Seattle was the last major qualifying MLG event before the Championship Series begins.
Thanks Louis Wu at HBO for the heads-up.
The latest Halo Babies comic gives a (thankfully rare) glimpse behind the scenes. Thanks, mrsmiley.
Frankie filed the Weekly What's Update this week from the floor of the Tokyo Game Show, after getting blitzed on martinis. Wait, that's not right.
Frankie was there just to catch up on other Microsoft games and stuff he likes-- he mentions Phantagram's Ninety Nine Nights (as a lot of people are doing this week)
In Bungie-related news, the move to Kirkland is complete and Bungie held their Summer Pentathlon-- those events will get written up (hopefully) in next week's Update.
For those hoping that there would be a Bungie announcement soon, Frankie has this to say:
A few folks asked me if I was there to unveil Halo 3. I smiled and told them the usual Bungie line. We haven't announced our new project yet, blah, blah, blah. We may not have announced it, but its coming along nicely.
The update concludes with a photo gallery.
The Tokyo Game Show, going on right now, is where Microsoft is beginning its efforts to try and prove to Japanese audiences that the Xbox is a console worth buying. Major Nelson has put the keynote address including Microsoft's Robbie Bach into his blogcast this week (as usual, in MP3 and WMA formats). Next Generation is weighing in with how Microsoft's dog and pony show is going over down in the land of the rising sun; they are sure to be the first of many. At the moment, though, all the buzz is about the Nintendo Revolution controller, which is apparently something that resembles a TV remote that relies on gyroscopic sensors that detect the device's orientation to provide control.
Over in MBO's Asulym forum, there's details from Psyched, including rules and brackets, for Myth Tournament 2005 (which is actually being played with Myth II). Thanks Gholsbane for the heads-up.
Sidney Shuman's article Five Ways to Save Video Games at Games.net holds up Halo and Halo 2 as examples of some of the worst trends in gaming; namely, unoriginal plotlines, epic ambitions, spectacle over substance, and cinema envy. Oh, and then there's "treating women like whores" which is apparently the only industry sin the Halo franchise isn't guilty of... yet.
(Like previously mentioned articles, this one is over the top at moments, but that doesn't negate some of the central points: namely, that emphasis on emulating movies and recycling storylines is going on at the expense of fun and interactivity, even if there are a lot worse examples of this than Halo. I think the point of the article is that if all the hit games follow these trends, and escape being crappy because of excellent execution, who can afford to take risks on interesting new stories and gameplay ideas?--Ed.)
Thanks Louis Wu at HBO for the link.
