TeamXbox has noted that EBGames.com is once again accepting Xbox preorders; but these orders are expected to ship on November 19th, and not on the official launch date of November 15.
Each bundle includes an Xbox console, a controller, power cord and standard A/V cable. The Alpha Bundle adds Halo, Oddworld, Madden 2002 and an extra controller, and costs $489.95. The Bravo Bundle swaps Madden for DoA3 at the same price. The Sigma Bundle includes all four games at a cost of $539.94.
Blambi at MythVillage spotted a review of Green Berets, the Myth 2 engine RTS game, over at The Mushroom. They found it to be more or less an exercise in frustration, citing the computer's unwavering accuracy, constant respawning of enemies, and the need for micromanagement:
For those of you who really enjoy a challenge in and RTS, or for those of you who get off on being pissed then by all means pick up Green Berets and feel what it truly means to be at a disadvantage. Although we did lose the Vietnam Conflict, I think we did better in real life than most people will do in the first few missions of this game.
They gave the game a rating of 3.5 out of a possible ten, listing the texture mapping and sound as positive points.
Louis Wu at HBO noted that PlanetXbox has posted a hands-on review of Halo. They were particularly impressed by the size and detail of Halo's environments:
The levels take place in a variety of massive environments, both indoor and outdoor. You start the game on your own ship, and once on Halo, you'll traverse mountains, valleys, and beaches, as well as heading indoors to various Covenant structures. The engine does a good job of rendering both in great detail, and handles transitions from one area to another seamlessly. We were particularly impressed by one scene set in a snowy mountain region, where you need to make you way to the top of a huge structure -- there is a definite sense of scale, and it's easy to overwhelmed by the size of things.
There are a couple of minor inaccuracies: they're referring to the game as Halo: Combat Evolved , got the timeline a little messed up, and said that multiplayer can connect up to 16 Xboxes -- which doesn't tell the whole picture, as that might seem to indicate a player limit of 64 if each box uses splitscreen mode; when the real limit is 16 players.
UPDATE: Djof noticed in the HBO forum that this is actually a repackage of the same article from GameSpy last week.
IMG has posted a news item that answers a few questions about the Mac version of Myth III, as said by MacSoft's Nate Birkholz in the IMG forum. His post:
Just so people are up to date, the A-Level bug list for the Mac version is as follows:1) Random crashes under OS X when using an nVidia card. Traced to GeForce drivers for OS X.
2) Unexplained performance drop under OS X around build 134 (PC gold version).
3) LAN networking broken under OS X.
4) GameSpy broken under OS X.Mumbo Jumbo has been working hard on getting these issues resolved. While they are working on these, they are fixing the Mac-specific B-level bugs and folding in fixes and tweaks reported from the PC version.
Birkholz also stopped by the Myth Village forum with some fantastic news:
Myth III under OS 9 is now rock solid. We can't crash it at all, and we've played for hours of multiplay (cooperative and competitive) without crashing, dropping, or otherwise experiencing nastiness.
MacSoft seems intent on releasing a solid application that won't be plagued with nasty bugs like the PC version. If this is all true, Mac users can look forward to a much smoother release than the prior one.
Head over and check out Voodoo Extreme's five Halo screenshots. These are some really pretty in-game shots, probably some of the best we have seen. You'll see a couple shots of the Warthog and the marine, as well as Halo's beautiful scenery.
HBO has linked to a mirror of Final Solution's scans of the Halo manual. The mirror, setup by Kbjlake, lets you download the images one by one or you can download a 3.6 MB ZIP containing all of the scans.
But no, it's not what you think. Although the logo on the bottle does look a bit like Ling Ling.
Originally, it was expected that somewhere between 600,000 and 800,000 units of Microsoft's upcoming Xbox game console would be available on the launch date of November 15. There is no longer any such official estimate, and some analysts are predicting something closer to 300,000.
Company representatives who spoke to GameSpot stressed that the Flextronics plant in Guadalajara can produce 100,000 units a week at peak capacity, which should translate to about 1.5 M units available between now and Christmas.
Thanks to James Prophet Fudge at VoodooExtreme for noting the item.
Our very own Ferrex, now of Bungie Studios, has posted a message in the forum at HBO giving his own personal views of the pros and cons of the Xbox compared to PCs or Nintendo's GameCube. Some of the highlights:
PC games are beginning to really struggle, in terms of finances and quality. The market is ruthless... developers have less time and more complex games to make, and even more hardware configurations to support. I can't call to mind any trends which suggest things will get any better--even the market for PCs is cooling off.
Against the GameCube, the advantages are even clearer to Rex-- the $100 is more than fair for better hardware, more launch titles, better developer support, etc.
