A quick viewing of the Bungie-related clip from Inside the Xbox by Film Oasis, as shown on the Discovery Channel and now available for download, reveals a few points about Halo 2, the sequel:
The documentary has been out a while, so this information isn't new, but these are the solid bits about Halo 2 that occur in the film if you haven't seen it so far and can't manage the large download.
The last couple of rants on community, statistics and player rankings in Narc's Retorts prompted longtime Bungie fan and Rampancy reader Bullseye (author of the compendious tome known as the Myth 3 Buglist) to go look up a History of Bungie he wrote that touches on the idea of what the Bungie community is, and the relationship between a game and its community. Max "Yeroen" Hoberman sent him a short reply, which in part reassured him that in Halo 2, there will be a lot more community-related features that Halo 1 couldn't have because XBL wasn't ready for launch yet.
According to SketchFactor, there's another edition of Ask The Cananimators up at Bungie.net; I think this is the third installment. It's about bacon again. And hockey. Well, what do you expect, they're Canadian. An interesting note in this is that both the Cananimators use Maya to make their animations. The animation package used to make mods was a sticking point for many Mac users, because Gearbox said that to import models into the Halo editing tools, you'd need to use 3D Studio Max or its free younger sibling, gMax. Both packages run only on the PC. Maya, of course, runs on the Mac OS. So Bungie animators, developing for the Xbox, are using a program that can run on the Mac... while Gearbox's porting team developed a version of the editing tools that apparently can't work with Maya because there's no filter. Hmm.
Halo: Truth and Reconciliation has two holiday cards from Bungie, one made by Shiek in 2001 (happy holidays, human), and the other by Paul Russel (infected with joy). Both cards are in Bungie's art gallery. Thanks SketchFactor.
SketchFactor writes on Bungie.net that the .NET conversion has been delayed at least until Monday. You can amuse yourself in the interim by reading the Bungie.NET FAQ.
Of course, when Microsoft bought Bungie, there were plenty of accusations flying around that MS wanted the Mac port killed, or the PC port delayed to avoid cutting into Xbox sales, and various other things, most of which made no sense. However, despite the usual sense of humor that permeates Bungie's communications with its fans, this remark strikes me as unintentionally funny, in answer to the question "I heard that there were lots of security holes and problems with .NET Passport...":
The .NET Passport is used by some of the top businesses and websites all across the world. The technology is proven and security is foremost in the mind of Microsoft and its engineers. For more info, please visit the .NET Passport Q&A mentioned at the top of this page.
The more conspiracy-minded among Bungie's fans will surely believe that .NET was not necessarily chosen solely for its technical merits, but because it's a Microsoft technology. After all, previous iterations of Bungie's community presences-- all very impressive-- got along quite nicely without .NET; the free software conspiracists will no doubt view this as an opportunity to replace internal use of Open Source Software, in this case the programming language Perl, widely used on Linux, BSD and Unix platforms, with a proprietary Microsoft framework.
Of course, if the system works, and works well, it's likely no one will mind such a transition-- after all, it's all about the games, not the websites.
The spotlights section at The Junkyard has two new entries: Barak from HaloPlayers and Dinky from HaloJuggalo. Thanks Mhaddy.
SketchFactor wrote that they expected Bungie.net to be down for upgrades on the 18th; however, Achronos now says this has been delayed a bit. The upgrades, of course, involve migrating B.net's account system to .NET Passports. If you've got one you use at Xbox.com that your GamerTag is associated with, you should use that one.
Mat "Shunji" Noguchi's weblog today has his first installment in the rant against "sucky gaming"; this one discussing the role of random variables.
Marty O'Donnell of Marty's Army fame is having a 2-year anniversary party for Halo. Apparently some Halo 2 info will be on tap. Thanks HBO.
The second batch of Halo figurines, including Green and Red Master Chiefs, an Elite (with Needler and Plasma Rifle) and the Ghost, has now shipped. The collection also includes the Jackal, which we noted on the Bungiecam earlier. Thanks SketchFactor.
The third installment of Lorraine "Mehve" McLees' report from the Anime Reactor convention is up at Bungie.net.
