If it seems to you that HBO is down, blame the weather: a lightning strike has apparently taken out the router that feeds HBO's DNS servers, which make make the site unviewable for a lot of folks. At the moment, we can still see it, but that's probably because we have one of the "lazy" DNS servers Louis Wu mentions in his post.
On the assumption that most people can't see the site right now, here's the entirety of that post:
Not sure how many people can even read this right now... but there's no point in NOT writing it. HBO HQ was hit by lightning yesterday, and a rather large collection of hardware got fried. The most critical piece of this was the router - because of it, no traffic is going into, or out of, the building. This means that the nameservers responsible for telling YOUR computer how to find halo.bungie.org are now unreachable - so you can only read this if 1) your nameservers are lazy and don't check very often, or 2) you're using a different URL to access these pages. (HBO itself is fine; it's housed 1500 miles away from the dead router. In any case, we're doing our best to find replacement parts; we'll be up as soon as is humanly possible. Apologies.
UPDATE: Subnova has a bit more detail on what happened, including the weekend habits of Cisco salesmen. Or rather, the lack of them.
UPDATE: Almost before we could post that HBO was down, it was back up. Move along, nothing to see here...
Part Five of the series on realism in Halo is up over at The Junkyard. In this one, Captain Roy Luthan (still not his real name) covers one of my favorite levels, Assault on the Control Room. Thanks Ryan "Mhaddy" Matthews for the heads-up.
This week's Bungie Update took a slightly different format: Frankie and SketchFactor offered a question and answer session (excepting those on the story or campaign mode). They asked for questions from fans (26 pages of them at last look), and then provided answers in the New Mombassa forum, starting around 2:00 PM PDT.
Xbox.com has posted a page it calls the Halo 2 Readiness Guide. Most of it, of course, is there to urge you to buy Halo 2, or, more specifically, to pre-order the special edition (as if anyone needed to be told).
However, it also has a more detailed list of things you'll want to go with that, such as a router to plug in your Xbox to your broadband Internet connection so you can use Xbox Live, an Xbox Live subscription, and a day off from work. It also reminds you link your gamertag to Xbox.com and Bungie.net, and to turn on "information sharing" under Billing in the dashboard for "Miscrosoft and partners". This is apparently to get in on tournaments and other events, including the XBL Backstage Pass contest. (Editor's Note: I'm guessing there's some advertising coming in your email from this, too, but you didn't hear it from me.)
FrogBlast makes an appearance (sort of) and Baby Master Chief gets a Halo 2-style makeover in the latest Halo Babies comic. Thanks mrsmiley.
The San Diego Union-Tribune is carrying a story quoting notable directors Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis as saying they expect that like music videos and television before, video games will have an increasing influence on Hollywood films. They key, as Jason Jones has said himself, is that playing a game is about telling a story:
"It's important to emphasize story and emotion and character. This is one of the things that games don't do," Spielberg said. "Currently, what games do is they give you the entire story in the run-up to the actual game play from level to level. You get to see a movie, and you're supposed to remember what the stakes are for the characters. But there's no reminder, nothing refreshes who these characters are.
"The next big emotional breakthrough in gaming is being able to tell a story that is consistent throughout the narrative."
[...]
"I think the real indicator will be when somebody confesses that they cried at level 17," Spielberg said.
Did you cry when you found out about poor Sgt. Jenkins in 343 Guilty Spark? Hmm... perhaps a future poll idea. Heads-up from Voodoo Extreme.
The Xbox Live Backstage Pass contest as announced earlier was only valid in North America; of course, the contest itself is worldwide, but each country gets its own page:
... with more likely to come. Thanks HBO and Gamesindustry.biz.
The Bungie Store is back according to Bungie.net; not everything shown is available yet; Frankie calls the selection "compact and bijou", which we'll assume he's doing to prove he knows French. One thing they do have, though: flaming ninja t-shirts.
More articles keep pouring out of the gaming press on Halo 2 now that the gloves have come off. Computer and Video Games has parts three and four of its series, covering weapons and Pete Parsons, respectively. Note that C&VG requires you to register an account after you've viewed a few pages.
TeamXbox has also summed up the new information.
Fluffy at HaloPlanet has written part one of his Halo 2 story.
