I don't know if you've seen any of the Halo 2 info, but it states that Bungie mentioned the Flood being back, with a new type of Flood alien. I don't know if they're on Earth, or somewhere else, but that's what I read at Bungie.
If you look closely at the 'brutes', they seem to resemble a kind of primate. They have fur, but its more dense and theres much more than the jackals have. In addition the mouth seems to be very simian. This would mean sweet f.a if it weren't for a comment made by 343 Guilty Spark - he says that the forerunners built halo and that it was essential for their survival as a species, and that he was glad that some srvived to breed. This makes me wonder if the brutes and the humans have some connection.
Tell me if im talking out me arse...
firstly...from what I had gathered...Jackals were reptilian (as described in The Fall of Reach) and thus...lack fur entirely.
Also...Guilty Spark was referring to the flood alone. They were contained on Halo...the Covies just came there a while back...and just before the game returned there whilst chasing the Pillar of Autumn through slipstream space.
...Is it me or is there a general misconception about the origins of the species in the game?
except for the flood, nobody originated ON Halo.
like the dude who suggested grunts fall asleep when it's too cold...Grunts are from a frozen planet...the shiny suits they wear are exo-suits that simulate their homeworld's frozen climate...they LIKE it cold...
Anywho - back to my point. If you've read the book, they describe the Covenant as being kinda like the Borg. They absorb races they find useful and use them in combat.

Forgive me if I didn't read the book yet! And can you offer another reason for why the Grunts were sleeping???
ANYWAY, the Jackals do have some sort of hair on their heads, but I don't think it relates to the brutes in anyway. The Brutes have scaly skin under their
fur if you look closely and they could be reptillian. I assumed that the Brutes are the body guards of the elders b/c they have not been introduced into combat against the humans. We'll have to wait and see in Halo 2.
Btw, I am planning to read "The Fall of Reach" soon so maybe I'll understand Halo better.
This just came to me literally a few minutes ago, but its really out there so bare with me.
As we know from the bungie site, there are two new races: The Brutes and the Prophets. We also know from "The Fall of Reach" and Halo that the Covenant are a large group of aliens that have joined together as allies and their elders think the humans are an affront and should be wipes out.
Anyway, since we have never seen the Brutes before, I have two theories:
1) The Brutes are the high guard for the prophets or the elders and are going to be standing in the MC's way when he goes after the elders or the prophets in Halo 2.
2) OR and stay with me on this, the Brutes are a completly NEW race that is also at war with the Covenant b/c they are not reptillian. The Humans and Brutes are not in anyway, shape or form reptillian (ignore my comment on the previous thred) so maybe the elders see them both as an affront and want them to be destroyed. Maybe the Brutes ally with the humans against the Covenant.
Imagine this: as thing get really bad on Earth with the Covenant bombarding Earth, there is very little hope for their survival. Then, all of a sudden, the Covenant fleets is under attack by unknown vessels. The Covenant retreat and the UFOs land on Earth and out comes the Brutes offering help. The Brutes then take the surviving Marines, weapons, vehicles, and the MC to the Covenant capital world for a massive attack to finally end the damned war with the Covenant, Brutes and Humans.

Those theories certainly make a lot of sense, but with reference to point No.1 I think the main reason we didn't see any brutes is just because they just didn't put them in. They probably would have had they had more time do do the game. Also in point No.2, I'm sure I read that the Brutes are specifically a COVENANT species. But of course I could be wrong. I like the idea that since they're like mammals and we are mammals that the Covenant would think of them as being like us, as all the other ones - grunts, jackals, elites, hunters and prophets - look reptillian.
By the way, as for the sleeping grunts I think they're just lazy!
Yeah, I check bungie's site and it says that the Brutes are Covenant, but they might decide to change their mind since they said Halo 2 would have surprises and twists.

Covenant races defecting to the humam side? Now *there's* a thought!
I don't know if you've already heard about this but the Covenant was formed when the elites me the prophets and they decided to join forces, with the prophets as the spritual leaders and the elites as the military task force. I always thought it looked as if the 'lesser' Covenant races (such as jackals and grunts) were brought into the Covenant by force and against their will. After all, elites never give up during a fight unless they're seriously injured or their shields are down, while jackals and grunts especially run away at the first sign of trouble. Maybe the brutes also were roped into it and want out? A Covenant rebellion would definetely be interesting.

Hey, bungie surprised us before w/ 343GS, the Flood, the destruction of Halo, and the betrayl of the Halo sentinals and GS. I'm gonna guess that the part you wrote about the Elites and Prophets joining up was in "The Fall of Reach" which I haven't read yet, but am planning to read. Also, the Hunters don't exactly run from combat either. Just a thought.

I expect that Halo 2's storyline will have just as many if not more twists and suprises as the first one. I get the feeling Halo was just the tip of the iceberg.
You're right about the hunters, they run away even less than the elites, i.e, never! Maybe they *wanted* to join the Covenant.
BTW I haven't actually read The Fall of Reach (yet) but I have heard that thingh about the prophets and the elites before.

I think I saw it on the Halo Story Page many times. Even if that isn't where it was, that's an excellent place to find out all kinds of background infomation on the game as well as philosophy about the storyline and the future storylines.
I think the convenant rebellion is a plausible idea, and it would provide an excellent twist ala the flood. however in an article from edge (its a uk games magazine for those who don't know, go to www.gamesradar.com, they have it) it says that "bungie is to introduce at least one completely new alien race... tentatively known as brutes."
Its mere speculation on my part but that implies that they aren't part of the covenant. In response b34r you misunderstand, I'm suggesting that the forerunners were our antecedants. I know that nobody comes from halo, thats a obvious. The connection to jackals was to emphasise the difference between them.

What if the Brutes were part of that strike force Cortana talks about on "Keyes". Now I know that the Special Ops covies were part of the force, but the Brutes might have been slower getting to Halo and gotten there after its destruction.
P.S. That stuff about the Elites and Propets was in the EGM aritcle on Halo 2 a while back.
As we've all seen in the Halo 2 trailer, Earth has suffered a fatal blow and the Covenant have brought Armageddon upon the planet. Personally, I think about all of those people down on the planet who are dying with every explosion.
Anyway, if the MC eventually gets on the Earth's surface, how is bungie going incorparate AI's for billions of retreating civillians, Marines struggling to fight for their planet, and attacking Covenant? I can't even comprehend how that's gonna look! It's total chaos! The MC firing at Covenant bombers while buildings around him are collapsing and millions of people are fleeing for their lives! Not only will that be unbelieveably disturbing, but also very difficult to focus while people are running around.
Looking forward to your comments Ryan.

A while back Bungie said that one thing they implemented but never really took *that* far is the idea of having A.I. sidekicks around to help you. You do fight with marines in the first half of the game but not much or on a very large scale. However, since it worked so well they're going to take it further in Halo 2 and have huge battles with loads of marines around helping you take on a huge number of Covenant. This must be why they designed the troop hog, a warthog just for transporting marines. I'm sure they mentioned simple commands too. Nothing much, just simple orders to the marines around you. I'd expect things like "Cover me!" "Retreat!" and "Go, go, go!". So we know there's going to be some big battles going on. A lot of people (me included) wanted simple commands, and Bungie listens to it's fans. Other developers take note!
I'm sure there will be sections where the Covenant are attacking earth, with bombers flying overhead and dropping bombs while people run for their lives as you mentioned. Although I expect that there won't be *that* much of it in the game becuase it'd get samey. They may be sections where you don't actually have to kill very much, you have to just get through alive and to safety like the final run in The Maw in the warthog (easily one of my favourite parts of the game!). Perhaps you'll have to get to safety and in a later level when the Covenant land you will take them on properly? Maybe you'll have to save marines as you go as well, that would be good. Imagine it - driving thorugh a ruined city while buildings fall all around you, desperately swerving to avoid bombs and falling debris while marines leap into the back...it would be great! As for the hundreds of civillians runnig away Bungie will probably make it so we're in less populated areas, although some running away would certainly add atmosphere. Maybe there'll even be a section where you have to actually stave off an attack on a city by using some seriously heavy artillery. Who knows?
The thing is, as I say if they made the whole game like that it'd be no good so they'll have to come up with a reason for why the Covenant actually land on earth and take us on properly...if very much of it is set on earth at all, that is. Who knows where the story will take us? I've heard in one preview that there's a level set on a Covenant cruiser like level 3 in the origonal. Maybe they'll land as a giant clean-up squad after the inital bombing to make sure all of mankind was wiped out?
One thing I'm looking forward to is seeing how earth looks in the future. Bungie do some great artwork. I'd like to see their vision of a future earth.
Yeah, that would be really good. And, with things that hectic, it's just going to get worse for Earth.
The next Halo ring becomes active in Halo 2. And I'm pretty sure this will be close to Earth. Ya know what that means people? That's right! FLOOD!
How on earth (pardon the pun) do you defeat the covenant. OK so you're the master chief, but all of earth colonies are gone. We're fucked! AM I missing the point, is the MC so hard he can do this alone? I hope there are some Sparta IIs around...
In seriousness I'd like to see a ocean level, where your on a aircraft carrier being boarded and you have to defend it from covenant boarding parties, a neat twist on the pillar of autumn, and protecting the runway so the aircraft can do their bit. That would really change the pace, having a madcap run on a jetski firing at covenant patrols. Maybe a mountain section sking down to save a city?
On another note whats the covenant homeworld going to be like? Is it all like the interior of the truth and reconcilliation, or are bungie going to surprise us?
I doubt that there's going to be an aircraft carrier. The technolgoy has evolved far beyound the uses of water transport, but hey, you never know! Skiing down a mountain would be a little weird since there are some dropships and stuff that can fly you around.
There is no "covenant" homeworld b/c each Covenant warrior group (Grunts, Elites, hunters, Jackals, Brutes, and Prophets) are each a different species and come from their own world. Maybe we'll visit their capital world where the prophets and elders give orders so the MC can shoot those hovering s.o.b.'s. It's probably going to be a huge world filled with buildings as high as the ski. Could be like the inside of the Covenant cruiser though.

This is a very good point that most people miss. there is no way with the entire covenant fleet surround earth, and almost 100% of earths military gone, that the MC is going to kill every single Covie as they hit the ground. besides that, the surface of the earth will be nuked long before that, maybe even Glassed (see book). the covenant have no reason to land, so I see no reason why we should. the trailer hint shows the MC diving onto another alien ship if I'm seeing it right, not down onto earth. it makes sense that if there is to be any fighting on earth, it's because a few covies escaped when the MC manages to destroy or put into retreat all the covies ships. and that a large group of surviving covies roaming around earth is a bad idea, and not something anyone on earth is going to be prepared to take out.

you didn't happen to like the movie XxX and think it was a high quality movie did you? I hope to God Bungie doesn't turn Halo into a "let's see how many explosions and stunts we can have in different parts of the world!!!"

So is Bungie just going to ignore the billions of people living on Earath or find some way to incoporate similar AI's for each one just so they run away? Bungie could just make you fight on Covenant ships that are attacking. The trailer does show the MC jumping onto a Covenant Assualt Carrier. We'll see on x-mas when Halo 2 comes out.
An water based vehicle would have advantages. They could move to avoid covenant attacks - unlike a runway. They could also freasibly submerge to avoid covenant attacks, given the advanced tech. of the time. In addition the grunts and hunters probably can't swim so would be disadvanted. It would be a cool game scenario and make a change from the land based levels. The Covenant homeworld would surely be the world of the prophets, as they are the political and spiritual leadership of the covenant.
A skiing level could be justified as a dropship could be picked up on radar but a squad of marines wouldn't. If there a snowmobile warthog why not?
over something like a drop ship that can hover and fly? or a comparable aircraft battle ship class. you know we got to have them in the future.
: They could
: move to avoid covenant attacks - unlike a runway.
lol, no runway, moving or stationary is safe from the US right now, why do you think the covies are going to be any worse at picking out ships and laughing stuff at them? plus ships are slow, they have MUCH more resistance to deal with. (that's why they stick 300hp engines in jet skies, and my BMW only needs a 190hp to get to 60 in six seconds)
:They could
: also freasibly submerge to avoid covenant attacks, given the
: advanced tech. of the time.
and again I ask why you think water is going to confuse the covies. it sure doesn't confuse modern military. if it goes under, we still target and fire at it.
: In addition the grunts and
: hunters probably can't swim so would be disadvanted.
that's almost as bad as saying that because I can't swim, that the 2 guys in a row boat with rifles are going to be meat. stick me in a F-22 Raptor and they'll never know (quite honestly) what hit them. it's the tech that counts. just because the MC could take on a 100 grunts hand to hand doesn't mean you give the 100 grunts a pistol and we'd still win...as I'm sure you know ;)

so you fly the dropship to the highest point and drop them off? that makes no sense. you want to fly as LOW as possible to avoid radar. that means dropping them at the bottom of a canyon and having them hike there ass up a hill side to the target.
: If there

snowmobiles are so they don't have to hike there ass up :)

A water based vehicle could have advantages, if you twat a dropship everyone is fucked, but if as ship is sinking you can escape. If the cov. are beating us the ground then having survivors is surely a good thing. IF the US can get any runway why has bin laden bit the dust? I doubt that in the cold war they could have had any soviet airbases. Who said they use propellors, id didn't. I was think of hovercraft. Hovercraft are faster and can go land - the covie couldn't defend a beach assualt against a proper fleet - battle ships to bomb the crap out of them from affar, aircraft carriers to protect them and so on. In ther opening sequence, the poa, and old out of date ship, takes down 4 covie ships. Extend that to advanced naval technology and it ain't so bad. Silent Submarines probably exist so why can't the pop up fire some shit and fuck off?
Also your assuming that everytime that a naval object encountered a cov. force the cov would be bigger and better. Say a lone dropship is leaving a combat area but theres fleet of submarine with anti aircraft missiles? To quote your goodself
"they'll never know (quite honestly) what hit them."
The remaining human are probably fleeing, so some are going to go to a mountainaous area. Surely there are bases in whatever american mountain ranges there are, and if there are skiing down would make sense. I never said a dropship would deposit the marines, you assumed. It makes for bases dug deep in the mountains, as it would provide 'some' defence from the covie.
I also never said that because they'd be poor swimmers you do a superman and fly like a magical deathworm raining death and plasma grenades. merely an advantage.
The people in the row boat cant do shit because they dont have radar or any of that kind of stuff, in halo we do, so its a slightly different. Plus just because you have tech it don't mean that you win. The example i'd use is the scorpion vs wraith.
The wraiths main and only weapon is its motar. its the most destructive thing in the game. so following your reasoning it should win, but the scorpion can win.Hmm?
In addition the snowmobile is noisier than a skiier, so the covie would hear you coming, and a skiier can traverse more difficult terrain. In theory allowing the skiiers to take a quicker/safer route. A silent squad of marines with sniper could assume a possition near a cov. base much more stealthily and goon them. but a snowmobile would draw attention to itself.
hmm. this is fun. hope you can read it im dyslexic. lookign forward to a response.

survivors in the middle of the ocean means just about jack shit :)
and who says if a drop ship crashes everyone would die? assuming it doesn't explode (I'm thinking covies heavy guns could vaporize a small ship anyway...) than who says future air bags can't be of some use? :)
plus, NOT getting hit is better then surviving a hit, which is why I'd go with fast, move able, vs slow and safe on the water.

: covie couldn't defend a beach assualt against a proper fleet
HAHA!!! I'm betting they could. the ONLY reason we win ground battles is because of the MC. their tech kicks our ass, hands down. that's why they're nuking earth and not us nuking them.
the reason the PoA could do what it did was because it was a new ship design, and it had cortana as the pilot. the chances of a human pilot in regular issue cruiser has a slim chance of even hitting the covies.
also, and maybe someone can back me up on this, but i think the PoA had a new type of weapon too....but the PoA was the only one of it's kind. it's first battle led it out to the Halo where it crashed, I doubt the human forces whipped up a few more PoA class ships in the amount of time it took the covies to get from Reach (that last planet) to Earth.
: - battle ships to bomb the crap out of them from affar,
: aircraft carriers to protect them and so on.
and the covie cruisers glassing the planet from above...
: In ther opening
: sequence, the poa, and old out of date ship, takes down 4
: covie ships.
see above.
: Extend that to advanced naval technology and it
: ain't so bad. Silent Submarines probably exist so why can't
: the pop up fire some shit and fuck off?
for every advance, there is an equal and opposite advance. first there was camo, than there was radar, now there is radar absorbing material, and soon enough there will be sensors that will pick up those planes. it's GOING to happen. it's the evolution of technology. I'm still going with the idea that submariens popping up and trying to fire is going to be similar to the "smack the weasel on the head with he giant mallet" game.
: Also your assuming that every time that a naval object
: encountered a cov. force the cov would be bigger and better.
which is true. all except for the MC and Cortana. and the PoA to an extent.
: Say a lone dropship is leaving a combat area but theres
: fleet of submarine with anti aircraft missiles? To quote
: your goodself
: "they'll never know (quite honestly) what hit them."
oh yeah sure, a lone dropship vs 4 submarines. no shit. but that's one drop ship, and there are a million more where that caem from, along with forces 10-1 probably at this point.
also, Submarines of today carry cruise missiles. if they do carry Ground to Air missiles they are heat sinking, and I don't see a giant blast of heat coming off those covies ships...
: The remaining human are probably fleeing, so some are
: going to go to a mountainaous area. Surely there are bases
: in whatever american mountain ranges there are, and if there
: are skiing down would make sense.
actually, it doesn't. you'd want to be as deep as possible, and in that case, your entrance is going to be as low as possible.
: I never said a dropship
: would deposit the marines, you assumed.
well what else is going to get you up there? you hike up to the top only to ski down? that makes no sense...
and seeing as you reason for skiing down on an enemy base was for the dropship to avoid radar, I think you let me to that assumption quite well.
:It makes for bases
: dug deep in the mountains, as it would provide 'some'
: defense from the covie.
: I also never said that because they'd be poor swimmers you
: do a superman and fly like a magical deathworm raining death
: and plasma grenades. merely an advantage.
actually, at least the grunts have their own bio suits. even if they can't swim (which we don't know they can't) they could walk along the bottom and be just dandy.
: The people in the row boat cant do shit because they dont
: have radar or any of that kind of stuff, in halo we do, so
: its a slightly different. Plus just because you have tech it
: don't mean that you win. The example i'd use is the scorpion
: vs wraith.
: The wraiths main and only weapon is its motar. its the
: most destructive thing in the game. so following your
: reasoning it should win, but the scorpion can win.Hmm?
all I can say is that I can take almost ANY weapon and beat ANY AI driven computer. now, if it were a scorpion vs a wraith, both being driven equally skilled human players, my bet would be on the wraith because it has a one hit kill and a reload rate almost twice ( maybe more) than that of the scorpion.
: In addition the snowmobile is noisier than a skier, so
: the covie would hear you coming, and a skier can traverse
: more difficult terrain.
BS :)
have you ever skied/snow boarded and snowmobile??
: In theory allowing the skiers to
: take a quicker/safer route. A silent squad of marines with
: sniper could assume a position near a cov. base much more
: stealthily and goon them. but a snowmobile would draw
: attention to itself.
: hmm. this is fun. hope you can read it im dyslexic.
: lookign forward to a response.
yes, there are advantages to skiing. but I don't think any of them are plausible in this game. I doubt ANY of the marines know how to ski. and I doubt you have either. though you could probably learn fairly quickly with the help of cortana. I still say having the MC start at a sprint (33mph?) up the side of the slope is going to be better than hiking to the top and skiing down, or else having someone drop him at the top and skiing down.
also I point out again that this whole line of thought, though fun, is probably pointless. the covies aren't going to go for much of a ground battle, they are going to glass the planet.
Earendil
Oh! They have the internet on computers now! - Homer J Simpson
I mean this in a non-offensive way, damn boy, you have a lot of time on your hands :-P
Anywho, you make a good point about not having the Covenant launch a ground attack since they don't really need to. There's no need to learn anything more about humans (since their on the verge of death) and most of the human forces are on the ground since their fleet is being blasted away by the assualt carriers. Wait a minute....I forgot about something. On the Bungie site, they state that you WILL be fighting on Earth, a Lunar base, another Halo and the Covenant worlds. I wonder why the Covenant are landing on the moon and Earth? Colonization maybe....we'll have to wait and see.
I agree w/ your point about skiing and the water vehicle thing too. On "Silent Cartographer" level, you're on your way to an island VIA dropship!!! No boats, no inflatable rafts, not even a freakin' wooden raft! LOL. What would be the point of skiing anyway? Halo is a shooter game, not a sports game.
Cortana: Okay MC, some how we got on top of this mountain and there's a pair of 500 year old skis. Let's get off this mountain already!
PLEASE!!! If Cortana told me that and I was the MC, I would pull Cortana outta my head and throw the bitch off the moutnain! On the other hand, there are those new variations of the warthog (a snowmobile variant, a transport variant, and what seems to be a dessert variant) so I guess the Covenant DO land on Earth for SOME reason. LIke I said before, we'll have to wait and see what Bungie is planning to do.
that is assuming the goal of the covies is to wipe out the human race.
in the book the covies landed to get a type of ancient crystal that Cortana ended up decoding and using to "randomly" jump to where the Halo is. other than that the covies really had no reason for landing as far as I know.
so that leaves only two other reasons. a sizable amount of covies crash land in out defense of earth. this is very possible. say a cruiser crash lands and even a 100 elites survive. you DON'T want 100 elites roaming around in ghosts and banshees, that is BAD. human marines get their asses kicked by elites.
the second reason for the covies landing would be the traditional Bungie GIANT PLOT TWIST :)
: I mean this in a non-offensive way, damn boy, you have a
: lot of time on your hands :-P
I'm home schooled, so I do 85% of my work on a computer :)
I'm a military tech nerd, a decently intelligent person, have been following Halo since it was created on the computer, back before Microsoft knew what a "bungie" was. I also have a fairly decent typing speed, so it doesn't take me all that long to compose these posts ;)
You're not really fucked, because you're commrades can help you and get you. I don't know about you but i'd have faith that you're allies would assist. In addition the earth is 70% water, it seems a waste not to use it. To disable a dropship you have to shoot is down so one assumes that it is heavily damaged - if the proverbial dropship the combatants inside hope they ain't captured, or have been vaporized. To have been shot down one also assumes there has to be marines around to 'mop the rest of them''.
Bin Laden has had the entire us miltary after his arse instead a few missiles. Being fast and manouverable doesn't seem to save Foehammer?
Indeed thats a good example. ON the Silent cartographer they land on the beach in dropships. The dropships move in, turn around, then let the marines out, and don't provide and covering fire.
A hovercraft would almost certain have some machine guns to do so and could run so cov over. MAkes sense to me.
Just because some one has better tech it doesnt mean it better. The vietcong had sweet f.a but they still managed to perform miracles of miltary genius. In the second world war the germans had better fighters and bombers, better tanks and so on but lo and behold.
Der achten mai ist ein tag der erinnerung.
A more accurate term would be amphibous vehicle - im sorry im dyslexic forgive me.
Yeah but there on earth aren't they. So what if there tech whoops ass. So does the mc. So does the poa. So does the warthog. Is there anything more fun in halo than powersliding a group of munchkins?
Im sure it said in the manual that poa was an old ship? hmm. anyway the point remains it ain't as good the cov. tech, yet there were 4 kills. The cov. come down to earth so were gonna have to take all our chances, wether its high tech or low tech. I dont think that the cov. would like to be shelled?
"also, Submarines of today carry cruise missiles. if they do carry Ground to Air missiles they are heat sinking, and I don't see a giant blast of heat coming off those covies ships.."
yeah fair play, but they ain the submarines of today or the missiles.
If we can make an ai like cortana, then an intelligent targeting system should be within our grasp?
The mountain ranges i've been to, and btw I can ski, (and i can barely write my name, kick a football(soccerball), or throw a cricket ball. Surely any one can?) have vast amounts of thick rock. Building a base therein makes sense to me. Where would you have hide from the cov.? You don't have to be all the way up to ski? Its not all extreme sports where some monkey get launched by a helicopter al the way up the matterhorn.

I would also think that Halo would concentrate on MC attacking the covenant ships or on MC going through Earth facilities and not MC running around New York. Or at least not while it's being bombarded.
Hey i was wondering there shoould be a level where hundreds of elites and covenent are rushing a com center to gain knowledge of the last humans and mc and a hundred marines are there to gaurd it it would be like a omaha beach level but not a big ocean just a open hilly like area and a cliff with marines on it and tanks and all the good stuff and in the background you see your fighters against the covenent fighters. if any one has anything else please comment.

In Keys, when you have to jump off of the cliff-thing where the flood and covenent fight, don't, just watch them, you'll see the flood kill the hunters.

I don't know if you've seen any of the Halo 2 info, but it states that Bungie mentioned the Flood being back, with a new type of Flood alien. I don't know if they're on Earth, or somewhere else, but that's what I read at Bungie.

speculation on the 'brutes'
If you look closely at the 'brutes', they seem to resemble a kind of primate. They have fur, but its more dense and theres much more than the jackals have. In addition the mouth seems to be very simian. This would mean sweet f.a if it weren't for a comment made by 343 Guilty Spark - he says that the forerunners built halo and that it was essential for their survival as a species, and that he was glad that some srvived to breed. This makes me wonder if the brutes and the humans have some connection.
Tell me if im talking out me arse...
b34r
Re: speculation on the 'brutes'
In reply to: speculation on the 'brutes'firstly...from what I had gathered...Jackals were reptilian (as described in The Fall of Reach) and thus...lack fur entirely.

Re: speculation on the 'brutes'
In reply to: Re: speculation on the 'brutes'This just came to me literally a few minutes ago, but its really out there so bare with me.

Fighitng on Earth

In seriousness I'd like to see a ocean level, where your on a aircraft carrier being boarded and you have to defend it from covenant boarding parties, a neat twist on the pillar of autumn, and protecting the runway so the aircraft can do their bit.

So is Bungie just going to ignore the billions of people living on Earath or find some way to incoporate similar AI's for each one just so they run away? Bungie could just make you fight on Covenant ships that are attacking. The trailer does show the MC jumping onto a Covenant Assualt Carrier. We'll see on x-mas when Halo 2 comes out.

over something like a drop ship that can hover and fly? or a comparable aircraft battle ship class. you know we got to have them in the future.
: They could

lol, no runway, moving or stationary is safe from the US right now, why do you think the covies are going to be any worse at picking out ships and laughing stuff at them? plus ships are slow, they have MUCH more resistance to deal with. (that's why they stick 300hp engines in jet skies, and my BMW only needs a 190hp to get to 60 in six seconds)
:They could
: also freasibly submerge to avoid covenant attacks, given the

and again I ask why you think water is going to confuse the covies. it sure doesn't confuse modern military. if it goes under, we still target and fire at it.

A silent squad of marines with sniper could assume a possition near a cov. base much more stealthily and goon them. but a snowmobile would draw attention to itself.

survivors in the middle of the ocean means just about jack shit :)
and who says if a drop ship crashes everyone would die? assuming it doesn't explode (I'm thinking covies heavy guns could vaporize a small ship anyway...) than who says future air bags can't be of some use? :)

HAHA!!! I'm betting they could. the ONLY reason we win ground battles is because of the MC. their tech kicks our ass, hands down. that's why they're nuking earth and not us nuking them.
the reason the PoA could do what it did was because it was a new ship design, and it had cortana as the pilot. the chances of a human pilot in regular issue cruiser has a slim chance of even hitting the covies.
also, and maybe someone can back me up on this, but i think the PoA had a new type of weapon too....but the PoA was the only one of it's kind. it's first battle led it out to the Halo where it crashed, I doubt the human forces whipped up a few more PoA class ships in the amount of time it took the covies to get from Reach (that last planet) to Earth.

for every advance, there is an equal and opposite advance. first there was camo, than there was radar, now there is radar absorbing material, and soon enough there will be sensors that will pick up those planes. it's GOING to happen. it's the evolution of technology. I'm still going with the idea that submariens popping up and trying to fire is going to be similar to the "smack the weasel on the head with he giant mallet" game.
: Also your assuming that every time that a naval object

which is true. all except for the MC and Cortana. and the PoA to an extent.
: Say a lone dropship is leaving a combat area but theres

oh yeah sure, a lone dropship vs 4 submarines. no shit. but that's one drop ship, and there are a million more where that caem from, along with forces 10-1 probably at this point.
also, Submarines of today carry cruise missiles. if they do carry Ground to Air missiles they are heat sinking, and I don't see a giant blast of heat coming off those covies ships...
: The remaining human are probably fleeing, so some are

well what else is going to get you up there? you hike up to the top only to ski down? that makes no sense...

all I can say is that I can take almost ANY weapon and beat ANY AI driven computer. now, if it were a scorpion vs a wraith, both being driven equally skilled human players, my bet would be on the wraith because it has a one hit kill and a reload rate almost twice ( maybe more) than that of the scorpion.

yes, there are advantages to skiing. but I don't think any of them are plausible in this game.

In reply to: Re: Fighitng on EarthI mean this in a non-offensive way, damn boy, you have a lot of time on your hands :-P

Reasons for landing
In reply to: Re: Fighitng on EarthNone.
that is assuming the goal of the covies is to wipe out the human race.
in the book the covies landed to get a type of ancient crystal that Cortana ended up decoding and using to "randomly" jump to where the Halo is. other than that the covies really had no reason for landing as far as I know.
so that leaves only two other reasons. a sizable amount of covies crash land in out defense of earth. this is very possible. say a cruiser crash lands and even a 100 elites survive. you DON'T want 100 elites roaming around in ghosts and banshees, that is BAD. human marines get their asses kicked by elites.
the second reason for the covies landing would be the traditional Bungie GIANT PLOT TWIST :)

Hey captain commie I like reading your posts I agree that the human gurrila resistance would be a force to contend with and a large number of those would be volnter American males age 18-27. A demographic that has done a lot of fighting for the freedom of others in the past century. You have no faith in America, are you french?

I think that what Matt is saying is that you won't have such a load of AIs running around. It's impossible to see billions of people in the street even in real life I guess.
I would also think that Halo would concentrate on MC attacking the covenant ships or on MC going through Earth facilities and not MC running around New York. Or at least not while it's being bombarded.
Just a guess tho,

Re: Fighitng on Earth
In reply to: Fighitng on EarthI'm really lookin forward to fighting on and for Earth I just hope that Bungie incorperates famous land marks such as the Parthanon or Collesium.

In reply to: Re: Fighitng on EarthNot to be a downer, but with the Covenant practically nuking Earth, I don't think they'll be much left of the Parthanon or the Collesium.

Re: Fighitng on Earth
In reply to: Fighitng on EarthHey i was wondering there shoould be a level where hundreds of elites and covenent are rushing a com center to gain knowledge of the last humans and mc and a hundred marines are there to gaurd it it would be like a omaha beach level but not a big ocean just a open hilly like area and a cliff with marines on it and tanks and all the good stuff and in the background you see your fighters against the covenent fighters. if any one has anything else please comment.
