Weekly Update: October 15th, 2004
You ever have one of those weeks? You know, the kind of week where you try to start your car, and it explodes in your face because the mob wired it to blow up and hurl your broken body across the street and through the plate glass window of the local acid factory? Well that was kinda like my week this week, but with the following metaphorical caveat — my broken, glass filled, acid-ruined body became a perfect fertile bed for a glorious, colorful display of flowers.
What is Frankie going on about this time? The horrible leak of the French PAL build of the game, and the impressive, wonderful, heartening reaction from our fans — who have been closing forum threads, slapping posters on the wrists and even reporting folks who broke the law. Community sites are all over it, and the big sites have been helping too, so a HUGE thanks to all of you guys.
Whoever did this is a criminal, plain and simple, but this isn't a pulpit from which to spew a sermon. Suffice it to say that stealing a traceable, Live Aware video game isn't the smartest thing you could do. But the way our community rallied to our support yesterday and the day before was incredibly gratifying. And a note to otherwise regular folks who might be tempted to download a copy — don't. It's really not worth the risk. Fines of up to $100,000 and all sorts of other legal remedies can be assessed against even individual downloaders.
You know, we're not Metallica. The cost of this is emotional, not fiscal (jerks would just hack and pirate the game on Nov 9th anyway). Bungie is mostly concerned that this event is going to ruin the plot of the game for the 99.9999999999% of fans who buy the game on November 9th. As you know, we've spent three tortuous years preventing story leaks, hoarding screenshots — not because we want to — but because they'll reveal twists and surprises. Now a few jerks have ruined that for everyone. It's one thing to sneakily pirate software — quite another to yell spoilers from the rooftops. As Napoleon Dynamite would say, "IDIOTS!"
Anyway, I'm making myself vomit with my combination of preachy outrage and quilted two-ply, absorbent love. Back to the matter at hand — the Bungie locomotive. Let's call it more of a monorail right now, since about 80% of the office is in Hawaii (if they're smart) or in Rainhole, Alaska (if they're married).
This week was another out of the office week. I accompanied ten copies of Halo 2 to San Francisco so that they could be reviewed over a period of nearly a week by gathered luminaries from various gaming, entertainment and technology publications from all over the US.
Everyone who played seemed to have a good time. Everyone had LOTS of questions about plot twists, new characters etc. I had to help out once or twice when people got stuck, but mostly it was eerily quiet, as the journos sat around in our special E3 chairs, with wireless surround headphones on, in front of 30 inch widescreen sets (CRT for maximum awesomeness and maximum Teamster complaints — since they weigh 200 pounds.) Actually, widescreen is a very cool feature, since the multiplayer game can then split vertically (for two) giving each player a great deal of real estate in co-op or MP.
The event was long enough for people to finish the game on NORMAL difficulty level, but then go back and try HEROIC: "Wow, that was freakin' hard!" And then they tried LEGENDARY: "What is wrong with you people!?" We should note that nobody completed it on LEGENDARY or frankly, more than a couple of levels. LEGENDARY is a whole new sick twist on game difficulty. LEGENDARY includes bizarre stuff like perma-death for co-op players — meaning that you can't hopscotch like you can on other difficulty levels. Once a player dies on LEGENDARY, both players are hurled back to the last checkpoint. It's brutal. Also, that place where you encountered two grunts and a flowerpot on NORMAL? Well now they're Hunters, high-ranking, sword-carrying Elites, and they're all PMS-ing. Seriously, sticking your head around a corner on level two can get it shot clean off.
Multiplayer was a blast. Like we'd hoped, players spent a long time exploring new modes, and enjoying them. As suspected, Swords is a huge favorite, but we (I was only HELPING!) played a lot of Assault, Territories and Juggernaut. Folks love NinjaNaut — Juggernaut where the Jug is invisible, has triple overshields and is the only player with a motion detector — you don't event WANT to find him!
Nobody would tell us what they thought, so I guess we'll find out in a couple of weeks.
Special props to Mister X — who, having only 24 hours to visit, played the game as a speed run, and pulled in the fastest completion time — though he missed about half the game doing that, and Mister Z — who, being hardcore as all getout, completed it on Heroic — and in a pretty respectable time. Epic, considering that was his first time playing.
Anyhoo, this week was short (game is done folks) and a downer, sorry, so here's a sad picture to make you feel even worse

Question?
Will halo 2 have more campaign levels than halo did. If anyone knows email me at batboy501@yahoo.com

No idea about number...
In reply to: Question?...but Halo 2's levels will definitely be bigger.
Frankie has remarked that the levels of the entire 1st game can be placed INSIDE one part of one Halo 2 level.

Thank you, Frankie.
Not only for the update, or even for hanging tough during the current fracas, but for imparting some valuable wisdom on me.
I was going to rent a pair of 30" widescreen CRTs for a Halo party this winter, but there ain't no way I can schlep 400lbs of underinsured electronics around in a Canadian winter. Even if I had a car.
-- Steve'll have to settle for smaller, or find some high-refresh-rate LCDs. Or maybe rent a cube truck and a dolly...

Thank you for the update, I was not expecting one in light of recent events. Once again goes to show that Bungie takes care of us, even if a few sh!7heads do something this stupid. BTW the crying Mister Chief had the desired effect of tinging my joy with a tear.

In reply to: Thanks DudeWhat are these 'unexpected plot twists' and 'unique moves' and all that stuff they keep talking about. Is it gonna be like Flood revisited!??? I know it's gonna be good, but I'm still worried they did something a little ackward and put large monsters an shit in there like that big walking thing in that trailer.
No boss monsters! Please Bungie!

Bosses unlikely
In reply to: Thought Provoking...Bungie's hardly ever done the traditional "boss" type of monster. One might argue that Muro in Oni might have been a boss, but still, the kind of approach to level design that culminates in large end monsters, typified by the original Doom, has never really been something Bungie has done, and I'd be quite shocked if they started now.
Whatever that thing was, I'm sure Bungie has placed it within a sensible context, and it serves the story.

I think it was a managers' meeting at EB Games; an employee snuck in a video camera and released the last 30 seconds of the video (in extremely poor quality) on the 'net.
Last I heard, the trailer itself is supposed to be released for public consumption later this month.

Well done frankie and thanks
Well done frankie and thanks for the updates they've been a blast. It was tough to hear that a game that we've been all been waiting for with such fervour had to be pirated, but it is good to see that the fans are rallying around with almost mac like zealousy, I've been playing games since the original marathon and was delighted to see exploding bobs in another form and now after playing Halo (done it about 7 times on legendary and once more to hone my skills before H2 release if that's any use) reading the 3 excellent books I'm so looking forward to the 11th, days are booked off, beers are ordered, kids n wife have been warned, neighbours told about the 5.1 on superloud and now considering buying a very large TV (28" psuedo wide just doesn't cut it). But again thanx for the updates.

Halo 2 leak
Actually Bungie i think you should look at it in a different light,
the fiends or "thieves" you are talking about actually want to make a prerelease, kind of like a demo of halo 2. The leak does not have English words or scripts in English and from what I've heard is rather uncomprehensible what the single players are talking about.
I believe that this leak may in fact increase the number of copies that will be bought on Nov. 9th simply because xbox live with halo 2 stats will be so savage.
Stats on bungie.net and clan websites
will also make buying the game and using xbox live a necessity
For those who downloded it, they wish only to get better faster than most at the Amazing Halo 2 Multiplayer
Bungie, Microsoft, Please do not take Extreme action on those who already planned on buying it
We love your product and most that downloaded it will buy it because they believe strongly in your software
I have a preorder of halo 2 coming through game stop and I will buy your product because i think halo 2 will be one of the best games i will play.
At least 90-95 percennt of the piraters will buy your product too.
Which in fiscal terms, would mean that you would make more money than you would have if the leak had not come out.
For those that download the code i believe they should he fined triple the cost of the game. That i believe is the best solution
For the one who posted it, if a bungie employee should be fired with no benefits and a 10,000 dollar fine at most
Your line of products since marathon have been very good (Oni was fun but not quite as halo or the marathon series)
I hope you make sure that you do not lose money
But at the same time think about how much money you would make
if you receive three times the price of the game for theft of intellectual property say for every 3 people who downloaded it (assuming that at least a third of those who downloaded it could be tracked by ip either by playing online or by what website or newsgroup theu downloaded it from.
This post is just to get some of you to think outside the box and look at the long term economic goals of Bungie which is to sell the most copies of halo 2 as possible, I believe if those who played halo 2 on the leaked french version would most certainly buy the game. Simply because therre is so much to miss and it looks like a marvelous game
I would say less than 25% of those who will buy halo 2 will strictly buy it for singleplayer
So even if many have played single player on the leaked version they would still like to buy halo 2 in english to play cammpaign and or multiplayer
These are just my thoughts
the individual downloader should not be punished
Please respond with Constructive Criticism, this is what makes points like what I have just typed interesting.
Don't go spam my message with attacks about what I don't know
Because I understand a lot more than most do about the economic situation surrounding halo 2 annd bungies and microsofts situation.
Take some action but none the less limit what you do to those who are loyal to you but wish to play the game as early as they can to get good
Whoever first stole the disc should be fined like I said no more than 10000 perhaps this amount will remind them not to mess with Bungie or Microsoft, but perhaps won;t put them in jail
With these restitutions Bungie and Microsoft should see an amazing return on halo 2 and perhaps with it more xbox and xbox accessories.
Well this is a mind of a 19 year old
Please responnd

Well, despite what you think, French isn't a totally incomprehensible language. In fact, they speak it in several countries. And their intent is rather irrelevant-- the only ones who get to decide when and how to release Halo 2 are Bungie and Microsoft, and they chose not to. Halo 2, of all the games coming out about now, doesn't need a demo. People already know about it. It doesn't need a demo to drum up interest-- certainly not a demo that allows someone to play the entire game, all the way through, without paying for it.
I believe that this leak may in fact increase the number of copies that will be bought on Nov. 9th simply because xbox live with halo 2 stats will be so savage.

I can't imagine why you'd think that. People already know about the fact that Halo 2 works on XBL, and that Bungie.net will track stats. People don't need to see those features on a bootleg copy in order to decide to buy the game. If they want to try before they buy, they can rent it like any other law-abiding citizen.
As for getting better at multiplayer? They better not try it on Live. I have a feeling anybody using a bootleg on Live is going to lose their Live account.

This is one of the worst delusions that pirates tell themselves. Products sell on their merits. The only time a leak or a bootleg helps a product is when nobody would know about the product without that release. That is not true of Halo 2. You're saying so yourself-- some of the people who are downloading it will buy the game, and have already preordered. But if you're telling me that you think some will download the game, who are NOT intending to buy, and are now going to buy it because they happen to have the full game (except in French) I think you're crazy. Halo 1 sold 4 million copies out of 15m Xboxes worldwide. Halo 2 will most likely sell more-- with or without this leak. I doubt this leak will have any positive economic impact. In fact, those who might have bought the game now perhaps will not, especially in French-speaking areas, or with players who don't have broadband, can't use XBL, and thus are unafraid of losing access to their XBL accounts.
Irrelevant, as nobody has downloaded Halo 2's source code. That was a misreport by another website.
Irrelevant. Damages for theft of intellectual property range up to $100,000. PER INCIDENT. The retail price of the game is not relevant to those calculations.
This post is just to get some of you to think outside the box and look at the long term economic goals of Bungie which is to sell the most copies of halo 2 as possible, I believe if those who played halo 2 on the leaked french version would most certainly buy the game. I would say less than 25% of those who will buy halo 2 will strictly buy it for singleplayer
Reverse that statistic. Reports still show that most people who play computer games don't play multiplayer, and most people who play multiplayer don't play online. This is why Final Fantasy RPG games sell in the multiple millions, and games like EverQuest in the hundreds of thousands.
Also, maybe some who download the game will buy it. That is not the point. The point is, they have broken the law. Even if you want to think "outside the box" they can't be any more likely to buy the game than they were before, otherwise Halo 2 wouldn't have been such a feather in the cap of these pirates, who I can tell you, after having read some of the threads, have no love for Bungie or for Microsoft-- stealing this game, for them, was about ego, not gaming.
[snip]
Well this is a mind of a 19 year old

It certainly is.
Actually, there are some "outside of the box" analyses to be made on this issue, and I'll be preparing a column on that shortly.

In reply to: halo2 leakActually, no. Most of us don't, haven't, and wouldn't have; not because we couldn't "get away with it" but because we believe Bungie's made something worth paying for.
And how many people DO pay for it has no bearing on whether or not people playing it without paying are breaking the law and worthy of criticism; because they are.

In reply to: halo2 leakThis would be the mind of a 16 year old telling those who have supported the pirates in any way to sit down and shut the hell up. Honestly, I don't know whether to be amused or to be sick.
1) Bungie will not gain any money from this, especially not if there are english subtitles.
2) Who the hell do you think you are to say what the other fans would do, given the chance? I, and any loyal, die-hard Bungie supporters, would certainly not go and get a pirated copy if we thought we could "get away with it." Hell, I'm certain I could get away with it. I have even more reason to try, as I don't have Xbox Live. I don't, though, because I have respect for the Bungie team, and for the work they put into this game, and it really burns my ass that a few morons are cheapening the rewarding feeling they must have for creating such a masterpiece. You pirating assholes should be ashamed of yourselves.

Even if you're going to buy the product, you stole something.
And stealing is bad, and anyone who steals should be punished. If you're going to buy the game anyway, have some patience and wait a while! We've been waiting for Halo 2 for quite some time now, and we can't let all this waiting go in vain for a leaked copy. Get what you deserve for the waiting and get the real deal. Remember, even if you're going to buy the game after, you stole the game anyways in an act of impatience. And stealing is stealing - and they will be punished.

In reply to: Halo2 coop is or not ? not sucksI'm disappointed myself; I was very much looking forward to at least System Link coop-- that would have justified a second Xbox for me, as Coop is the most fun you can have playing Halo, but a horizontally-split television screen just does not do justice to the Haloverse.

:( tis the suck
In reply to: Halo2 coop is or not ? not sucksI was looking foward to Halo2 85% for the ability to COOP with my good friends who I have spent years playing side by side but have long since moved away. Live is a great tool, and Halo2 has some seemingly great Live features. Lack of Coop seems like a poor decision and that addition could have boosted sales even further and if not atleast cemented the current orders further. Makes me sad and I hope a patch is released. Make great use of that HD and Cable modem.
