the beams dont go to the other side of halo. They dissapear about 500 feet away from the ground like almost everything in the game. Plasma riffles blasts dont go on forever, they just dissapear and thats it. and sometimes i think people get way to far into this game. The only way you'll ever figure out what there ment for is to email some people at bungie.

They are for communication, and as Halo is spinning, the destination of the charges moves out the way of the plasma charge. therefore there needs to be someone / something to adjust it to reach it's destination. It's like throwing a paper airplane perpendicular to the wind direction. You cannot simply throw it in the same direction all the time, you will need to throw it against the wind. then if the wind dies down, you will need to throw it i the original direction and so on, so it will reach the correct destination. I hope I've cleared this up for you, and STOP DISCUSSING THIS MATTER!!!

The aren't weapons, or they wouldnt fire all the time...

What if they WERE firing at the PoA? The Covenant may have landed on Halo long b4 the marines did and began firing the beams to help take down the PoA.....remember when Cortana said on SC ...I underestimated the Covenants understanding of Halos systems......

Thats my other 2c....

I think the reason this is a wasteland is becuase of the sheer force the PoAcreated when it landed on Halo, making a big firey burning shockwave, incinerating everything, also if you look at it, the big trailing smear ehind the PoA is a big scorch mark...thats my 2c....

I have noticed that you actually do not see that the beam comes anywhere close to the other end, it just disappeares, maybe it burns up like the plasma shots from plasma weapons...

But i also think it is some kind of function for the final weapon of Halo, like the beams from different parts of Halo must hit each other in the middle of Halo and form a great sort of plasma beam to be shot out in space.

Just so everybody knows-- we're generally following the lead at HBO with regard to the recent set of Halo 2 videos.

Whether or not it looks like those sites (IGN and GameSpot, etc) were supposed to tape the demo, they seem to have intended it only for subscribers, so we won't be posting direct links or mirror lists here.

However, I think that, hook or by crook, lots of people have already seen it (we won't say how or where).

So... what do people think?

Ok.. Apparently you guys have not seen the E3 video of Halo2. It is not short and it shows practically an entire level of gameplay. Cutscene in the beginning, tons of gameplay, cutscene at the end. All of which were un-freaking believable. The graphics and gameplay far exceed anything I was even dreaming of out of this game. If bungie does every level as action packed, chop-filled with all the eye candy and awesome interaction that is seen in this level... I dont know how I would ever get away from my TV. To sum it up.. The MC is badass, the brutes are tight, the graphics are unparalleled, the new guns are extremely cool, the new vehicles rock the house, the lighting effects are brilliant, the level designs are extremely wicked, the destructable landscapes look more fun to crunch into than a twix bar, and overall - this game looks like it will be more fun than any other game ever made.

In reply to: Halo 2 Video Impressions?

This video did enough to impress me. it was more than another "looks better thus should be more fun to play" type of game. and it didn't strike me as Halo1 with a few upgrades.

the one thing I always missed about Halo 1, that was shown in the earlier trailers of the game, was the abilities to fight over wide open landscapes. I always wanted to have tank and mortar battles that spanned canyons and across gorges with bridges. instead what we got were islands and a few 1/2 mile long multi player maps.

this game, from what this trailer shows, seems to be stacking up to be far more open and varied. multiple levels within buildings, buildings that you can shoot from one to the other...if there were to be a multi player map of this size, you could do a few 8v8 urban sniper wars that lasted 24 hours. and with that, you'll be able to take up a true "sniper position", where you're hidden in a remote and high building window or ledge, not in like in Halo1 where you sat on the edge of a wall and took as many shots as you could before someone killed you.

the simple ability to SNEAK from one side of the map to the other may be able to be pulled off in this. in Halo1 multi-player that always involved more luck than actual sneaking skill.

wide open street battles look extremely fun as well...I always thought a few mods for Halo where you'd be able to have jeep races would be great...but again, due to the lack of outdoor areas, that never really happened.

yes yes of course there are new weapons, new bad guys, and other stuff, and those are all well and good, but not really worth going off about :)

though there are things that have been added that stick out in my mind. taking over vehicles, very very good. though I still would like to see the MC pick up a Ghost with an elite in it and toss it into another ghost :)

dual sub-machine guns, this is going to rock, I can't wait to see what else can go dual...can you say dual pistols?
I wonder what kind of disadvantage Bungie will place on the MC for holding two guns at once.

How about the combo attack the MC lays on the Brute, anyone notice that? he makes a left-right slap at him, and finishes it with an upthrust at his chest/head with the butt up his gun. I wonder if pulling off 3 straight attacks in a row actually does more damage, or if it's just for looks.

oh dear I can't wait...too bad I'll be out of the country when it's released :(

For the most part, I agree with you on your points. The maps are a really big deal when it comes to halo. Halo was and probably will be more restricted than we all once thought it would be. The rolling hills and mountains have been abandoned for a more crowded, hectic battle-field. However, in the map shown in this trailer, the landscape seems to be pretty huge while combining a crowded city atmosphere. The result: big and chaotic. Also, if you guys remember the days of marathon, crowded places can have more twists and surprises than a wide open landscape. One thing that I noticed on this demo that I thought was absolutely insane was... No load times. there were no checkpoints or slight glitches of load time like we had seen in Halo1. Maybe a cutscene somehow incorporates the load times for each level? Anyway, on another note, yes those dual machine guns were awesome. I want to see a couple of revolver action twin barrell shotguns like I had in marathon 2 ;) that would be sweet.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Re: Daddy Likes

Probable penalties imposed by dual weapon use:
-you can't throw grenades, that hand has a gun!
-accuracy is decreased because you're not holding the gun with
both hands (in HALO, MC held all guns w/ both hands, right?)
-your melee attack(s) may be slower, weaker, and/or less accurate
-reloading may not be possible until you drop one weapon, or at
least will be greatly slowed
-pistols, the needler and the SMG might be the only weapons you can
use two of
-in HALO you could only carry two weapons, so if you double up, that
might be both of your weapons!
-even if carrying two of the same weapon doesn't count against your
total, or the total is increased, that doesn't neccissarily(sp?)
mean you can carry twice as much of that type of ammo

Those are just some possible restriction imposed by two weapon use. However, since you probably can't use grenades, that would mean the left trigger would control your second gun. Imagine walking around with two overcharged plasma pistols, and being able to unload either one whenever you wanted to! Or even just using two plasma rifles, letting loose with one until it overheats, then opening up with the second while the first one cools! That could mean an unending rain of plasma, and the elimination of the biggest drawback to plasma weapons. But it could get messier if you can use two different weapons at once. How about letting loose with stunning plasma rifle fire as you close to unleash a clip of needles? Heh heh, now there's a thought.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Daddy Likes

The ingame cinemnas were terrific, the gameplay footage was equally stunning.....but I hated the Low res of video monitor they used for the show, it made the game look to too dark.....Dammit all. Why did'nt they use a better quality high res display.
But other than that it was perfect.

I saw a covenant mortar tank, artillery piece and human bomber aircraft, making me wonder are these vehicles really playable in the single player and multiplayer modes????????? please be!!!!!.

So the controllable vehicles in multiplayer are: the banshee(Yeeehhhhh!!!!!!!!!), the scorpion tank, the shadow patrol vehicle, all them different warthogs, the AFV, the ghost hoverbike and possible the plasma mortar tank, some artillery piece and a human bomber aircraft and even transport planes and more we don't know about.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Re: video impressions

I don't think it was the monitor that was bad, I think it was the fact that someone had a DV camera and recorded it as it played., but it's better than nothing.

Oh and BTW, if u noticed, the dropship the MC is transported on is different from Echo 419 or any of the other dropships.

also will you be able to kick people off ghosts in game?
and the driving marine was pretty cool too

In reply to: Re: video impressions

Well, this is all I can be sure of from seeing the video:

- Double weapons seems to be limited to pistol sised weapons, like the SMG, since the MC later switched from the 2 SMGs to 1 (new) rife.
- The new rifle has a slower rate of fire, but has 2x zoom (like pistol) and can get headshots.
- The warthogs now have a new weapon, appears to be either a cannon or laser, it has a slight reload time, but it is accurate and instanteneously damaging. Also, now your fellow marines will drive for you, and will do it WELL.
- Your fellow marines will do more than stand around, and seem to follow their own set nav points and objectives.
- The lighting is insanely good. Definatly using the Xbox to its fullest. Other effects incluse smoke from weapons, especially the dual SMGs.
- Environments seem to be a lot more destructable, with some nice explodable cars, containers, etc.
- Enemys are uglier. Yeah.
- Cut scenes and gaming transitions are a lot smoother, no visable loading, but they could've just edited that out of the tape.

Yeah the warthog the MC was on had a beefier slower gun but if you look in the video at another warthog driving around a marine is shooting a chain gun from it so the warthogs have different weapons.

Looking at the video for the umpteenth time you can see that the weapon MC uses is definitely Human (Orange-yellow trace lines) but that it is not a rocket launcher. It could be a gauss cannon but that would probably be energy based and not make sense as the gun uses human ammo. The weapon is double barreled as you can see from the alternate flashback report positions but beyond that you really can't tell what the ammo is as it moves too fast to be a rocket.

In reply to: Halo 2 Video Impressions?

If I was Sony I would say that the first day of the PS2's life to now was a complete waste....because there is no denying it this single demo is about hundred times better than the BEST games that ever existed on the PS2. It is that good and delicious. If I was at Microsoft I would dream at night atmaking love to Laetitia casta bacause the king of four-eye geekdom has finally given the xbox a bright future ahead of the PS2. I thought the Xbox could not outdo what appeared at launch but now I take that back. Vastly superior First party titles, better online service and third party people sony signed deals with abandoning them will see the fall of the PS2 in short order. lalalalal Hey hey hey goodbye.

Lets see the Xbox is going to see Doom III and Half life II. Has two monster developers Rareware and Bungie and a relatively potential great developer, Digital Anvil that pass info back and forth between themselves to make their games look incredible. Sony has no good First party developers to rely on, I can only think of former artist Known as SingleTrac, AKA Incognito Sudios and they to will eventually be swallowed up by the Bill Gates glass nerd empire (Twisted metal Xbox soon). And Rockstar and Square will soon sign off on the PS2 leaving Sony exposed as a old fragile naked man.

I am making a guesstimate..... I say Bungie will sell about Fifteen million to twenty million copies of Halo II and it will sit right next to Mario III(NES)or Mario world (SNES) as the biggest known and selling game of all time or may actually be the biggest game of all time period!!!!!!. Bungie, the studio I know for Myth and Oni has hit the big time. Yeah!!!!!!

I haven't said much in a while, but that ends now that the E3 Demo has been revealed to the public.
First to start, THAT DEMO IS SOO UNBELEIVABLY AWESOME!!!!! THe graphics are so awsome compared to Halo 1. The detail is so cool. The game play looks great too. The Covenant have an entire new arsenal of vehicles and weapons while the humans do too. It would be so cool if the MC could pilot a phantom, but we'll have to wait and see.

I'd like to acknowledge that I made mistakes regarding predictions and wishes. The Brutes are just new units that the Covenant have, not possible human allies or another race that the Covenant are fighting (however a Brute rebellion seems possible ;-)). There are still no commands for the Marines, but hey that's no big deal. The Marines seem much smarter (they can drive the Warthogs now! YAY)

I still have a few questions though (and these are going to be annoying, but I'm going to post them anyway):
1) Where the heck are all the people in that city??? I mean come on! The Earth musthave tens of billions of people on it, so how has one city managed to be evacuated while the Earth is being bombarded like mad???

2) Why were the Marines on the dropship wearing those helmets that covered their whole head while the others where nothing but those same old, stupid helmets?

3) What the hell was with that highway, man? Yes, for some reason that big blast decided that it would be perfect to close the door at that moment when nothing was happening. (?????)

4) Why are there still no women Marines? (not to start a thing, but seriously.)

5) When those Elites drop from the sky (or orbit) are they in cryostasis or just in the pod? If you think about, reentry into a planet's atmopshere, iits pretty rough and if you're in a tin can, it won't be much better.

That's all for now. Halo 2 is going to be the best game EVER introduced to human kind EVER! Let's hope it will be resleased sooner than expected.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Hey guys, miss me? LOL

Welcome back :)

I can answer some of those questions for you :

1) The people in the city are probably all dead, but remember that that city was huge, and in that mission you only see a small part of it.

2) The marines with the new helmets are ODST's (Orbital Drop Shock Troops - from the Halo book). They are tougher than the regular marines, and they wear less-powerful versions of the Chief's armor.

3) I thought I saw the Chief hit a button somewhere inside the tunnel to close the gate. However, it was right after the smoke so I cant be sure.

4) No Idea...

5) Those Elites probably have padding inside their pods. I doubt they are in stasis, because such a harsh revival would be very disorienting.
