Personally, I never knew Chia, never talked to him. But I extend my deepest hopes that he will pull through, and remain a prominent member of this tightly woven community. And in the update, it gives the address to send flower. What about i-cards? whats his email so we can send him an i card so he can them when hes better, or now, if he has access to a laptop or something.

I've know Chia for a while, he's even featured prominently in several Bungie Sightings slideshows. Hell, the man designed my site! We kinda lost touch the last year or so, but every now and then we'd chat on AIM and it was always good to hear how he was doing with his school and aspirations for college. My wife had given him some advice on some schools that had good Art programs, and his mother tearfully told me that he was so looking forward to checking out some colleges besides the ones he had already looked into.

Folks, he only had his license for TWO days. How cruel is that?

It's not that... there's an issue with the fund and how it accepts money. There's also an issue with it being non-profit. Right now, the easiest best way to deal with this is to send a check. Once their legal counsel and bank has worked out some stuff, we'll try a few venues.

c2it.com actually has the best deal, (Claude and I used it for the BORG shirts) but I still need to settle somethings before I move ahead with any of them.

Hey - we've been doing that for the various funds related to Patriot Day (September 11th) for the last few months. I think we could probably do that here.

The XBox price is not negotiable and it is definitely not going to be found at $400 CAD ($255 USD.) Dream on.

The best you can do to guarantee yourself an XBox by Christmas is to bid on eBay *today* and foot the shipping charges. This will probably cost you in nearly $550 CAD.

Otherwise, drive across the border next monday very early in the morning and camp out at a Toys R Us...or maybe even a Target or WalMart. You will be able to get one for ~$320 USD (~$500 CAD) after sales tax.

Well thansk for the help. Unforunatly I don't live anywheres near the border but getting one before christmas isnt an issue. Coupons or reabates for even like 20 bucks would be quite handy too so if there are any out there that would be nice. Through the week after Thanksgiving, Microsoft sold 738,000 Xboxes and an average of 2.4 software titles for every console sold, according to Credit Suisse First Boston. Nintendo sold 534,000 systems and 1.9 games for every console, it said."

I am in French, in 9th grade, French I. As I read through the fall of reach for the third time, it hit me. :) I finally realized Cote D'Azur sounded French ( i guess i just never thought about.) So i asked my teacher what it meant. It turns out Cote D'Azur is actually a place in France near Toulouse, and refers to that area of coastline in France. Odd. Wonder if Mr Nylund thought of that when he wrote the book. I dont remember Cote D'Azur in the book being near water. ?

It's a human colony - we tend to name things to remind us of what we love, or what we left. New England is nothing like England, nor is it surrounded by water. New York is quite different from York. And so on.

Cote D'Azur was probably founded by a spacefaring Frenchman. :)

Ok guys I thought it would be nice if the Myth comunity could react as a whole and send Chia our best wishes. Of course this dosnt mean each and every one of us can do it on their own also.

What I was thinking is this, we can setup a webpage (I can do it) were people can go and send a short message to Chia. It would also be great if people who have a scanner scan their signature and include it.

Then we can gather all the messages and signatures, put some nice Myth Image as a header, print it down in a huge card and mail it to Chia with the myth comunity's best wishes.

If you gusy think the idea is good I can setup the page and then sed the card.

Rauko.
P.S. Please spread teh word on this to other forums, see what the rest of the comunity has to say.

I can be reached at : hobbit@adinet.com.uy

P.S.2 "Paranoid considerations": if you are worried about sending your scaned signature around just dont use your usual one, a simple sketched line or 2 will do, the idea of the signature is just to give it a human touch, not just computer printed words. Also, if you dont like passing your real name around, just use your usual myth name.

You know how I feel about the CSFB and MS press releases.

MS already being guilty of spinning Halo ahead of Luigi's Mansion...

However, I just came back from the mall and EBX just got a dozen or more XBoxes in, so either Nintendo has a supply shortage or it's selling out better because they didn't have any. Of course, EBGames has been saying all along that they've been getting more XBoxes than GameCubes.

I went to Best Buy too and I saw a woman walk out with a GameCube, but I have no idea if they had any others in stock. If they do, they don't keep them on the floor.

Of course, 4 people walked out with PS2s while I was there. 1 person walked out with an XBox...I didn't realize they had special XBox plastic bags at EBX.

So anything not precisely vis-a-vis comparable is irrelevent?

Actually, don't you think calculating an average "/day" sales rate is irrelevent? First of all, the numbers cannot be averaged because there's no indication the distribution was equal every day. Not only do you totally ignore the fact that certain days of the week are better shopping days than others, your own averages aren't for the same time ranges. Your quotes are for the 30, 16 and 13 days, respectively. How is this casual comparison any more valid than mine? If my average isn't attributable to yours, your own averages are just as meaningless.

It is still way to early to see whether PS2 will continue to dominate as GameCube and Xbox games. and you all conveniently ignored the fact that the Gameboy Advance and Color games had just as many top games in the top 20 as sony. As i have heard that eventually the gameboy games will be playable on the Cube id say that Nintendo has a perfect strategy. Secondly some of the people buying ps2 titles have had them for over a year. where as everyone buying xbox and Cube just now got them. Give it t least 6 months then youll know

Andrew's picture

In reply to: It is still to early

It's not a contest of the PS2 vs. the Gamecube, but a contest of the PS2 vs. the Xbox. Now, Halo may be the best first person shooter around, but it's still *just* a FPS. Most of it's good ideas have roots elsewhere, such as the vehicles from Tribes, and the whole game feels like a vamped-up GoldenEye to me. Don't get me wrong, the game is addictive . . . but it isn't worth the price of a whole new console, especially when it's coming out for Mac/PC as an improved version. Think about it, Bungie's success has its cores in the community support, which includes mods and third party plugins . . . obviously that is rather hard to include on ANY console. When it comes out for Mac/PC, then it'll deserve the title of the best game around.

Now, back to the subject. PS2 vs Xbox. First question - what do you buy a console for? Well, you buy it for the games. You don't need the console to be particularly powerful as long as there are plenty of decent developers for it. It's nothing like buying a Computer. PS2 has a gigantic library of games, while the Xbox has less than 40. Granted, the PS2 has had an extra year to build up that library, but the PS2 also had more launch titles than the Xbox . . . and they were good. Especially SSX. (If you haven't given that a try, you're missing out. SSX, NOT SSX Tricky.) Now we have Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X . . . with the advent of Tekken 4 somewhere along the line. Also, slightly older games such as Grand Theft Auto III and Gran Tourismo 3 plus these other epic games are enough to keep ANY avid gamer happy for ages.
Back to the Xbox. The Xbox has very few renowned developers. MicroSoft made the same mistake Nintendo did and didn't sign Squaresoft, and unless MS buys Take2, they don't get Grand Theft Auto III. Also, if MS buys Take2, guess who gets the rights to the Myth series? =\

True, the Xbox is more powerful than the PS2, but the load times are still there. The Xbox has the ability to use more textures, more polygons, more whatever . . . but that would slow it down by a good margin. Guess what, very few developers have used the full extent of the Xbox's power for just that reason.

So, I can hear you saying . . . The Xbox has four controller ports! Didn't you know? Having four people play a game is a massive hog of power. If you're playing a game that doesn't have much slow down from this burden, then chances are you could do the same thing on the PS2 with the adapter that lets you have four controllers connected. (Example - The Bouncer is one of those games that can be played with four people without massive reduction of frame rates . . . but the game sucks. It's absolutely worth a play, but not worth the buy. The game IS beautiful, just the interface is irritating.) If you want a pary console, go buy a Gamecube and get the sequel to Smash Brothers. I'll give Nintendo credit for creating the ultimate party game!)

Thusly: PS2 Xbox Gamecube.

Well, it's been a goodly while, hasn't it? I'm thinking that either Nathan got smart and shut everything up until they had something to show, or the whole project simply vaporized at the first ray of sunlight. Right now I'm leaning towards the latter possibility, since at last report they had a number of designers, story people and "advisors" - including some questionable individuals (who frequently displayed questionable judgement and disreputable behavior) from the small fan community - but not really anyone to do any serious coding. Such an inelegant team composition doesn't produce confidence. Or working titles. They were also looking for funding, IIRC. Startups like that need a wad of cash - because you need to be able to feed yourself (and maybe your family) during the X number of months (or YEARS) where you're still working on that first, profitable product.

It's awfully hard to tell the wannabe groups from the real thing at the earliest stages... I think that there was a certain extra amount of attention that many people paid Nathan and Island Four just because Nathan had been a designer for Halo (pre-acquisition) with Bungie, years ago.

Not that I'm trying to be excessively harsh... but we are attempting to discuss the few facts that were known about an attempt to operate within the real business world. The software development industry is becoming more and more harsh, lean and unforgiving.... hence the extinction of greats like Looking Glass, the acquisition of numberless companies by numberless corporations, and the trend towards lower budgets, tighter schedules and plentiful me-too-formula titles on the market.

I don't recall exactly what gross misbehavior.

However, Nathan Bitner had wanted to focus on design; to get a detailed design worked out before doing full-scale coding and artwork. But one wonders how well this has worked out.

An easy way to test one's ideas is to create approximations of them running on existing game engines; I wonder how much of that the Island Four developers have done.

Seems like a serious indictment. However, if they were trying out ideas on existing engines, they might not need one right away.

Due to the Microsoft buyout, Bungie will not be there, as it has done on many previous years; however, I will be there, probably Wednesday and Friday and perhaps also Thursday; I anticipate an excessively-big crowd on Tuesday, the first day of the revealing of new stuff there. I'll be at the game area part of the time, and these might be good subareas to meet in:

  • MacPlay: Aliens vs. Predator, Giants
  • MacSoft: Myth 3
