The trick to using the needler is to wait until the elite is doing something that will make him hold still for a second. Throwing a grenade, diving for cover (and then rolling to his feet), or going berserk.

The other trick here is to switch up your weapons. Hit an elite with an overcharge plasma pistol, and then switch to your pistol or AR while he's staggered and finish him off. The overcharge bolt removes shields regardless of how strong they are (works great on jackals, too). Overcharge + pistol = headshot goodness.

Hell yes! I do this all the time. Personally, I think the human pistol/cov pistol combo is the best in the game. It takes effectively TWO SHOTS to kill a cov. elite this way. One to take out the shields, the second shot to the head. Blam.

You can take that sucker down in 2 seconds flat.

Gets a little harder with multiple elites, but the same system still kicks ass. :)

I had, but I always die from either guys coming from behind me. or when I try and get back from through the doors (seems you have to kill all the guys before you can go on) a yellow elite slips in before the doors close and finishes me off.

only once have a stopped him, and that was when I had a sniper rifle and from a distance put a shell in him, when he was running at me up the ramp, another shell, and when he flinched and yelled within 6 feet of me, with my lost shot, put it in him. most exciting moment yet :-)

I think the next yellow elite got me though....

Be sure to pick up the weaps lying around from the foes you have defeated. Don't discount the plasma pistols that the wimpy grunts run around with. When its overcharged, it can knock an elites shields right out and it has a limitied ability to track it's targets if its moving.

It's tough, and the other Marines are pretty much worthless, but stick to it... and use the terrain! Use new tactics! Melee attacks are suprisingly effective from time to time.

Now here's what I did...

Alright, well, I actually just beat the game on legendary today, and let me tell ya, this fight was one of the hardest throughout the entire campaign. This is because #1, there's no cover, hiding places, or temporary relief. #2, they don't really miss so often on legendary, which makes those annoying little Grunts a much bigger threat, especially in numbers. Anyhow, on to the advice...

I found two basic strategies that worked on this level, and if you use them (and your mad Halo skillz), you just might survive to grab that jeep. First off, ignore your marines here....you'll be lucky to get yourself out of this alive, let alone a few guys w/o shields. The first Covenant dropship or two, you're alright in your tower...they don't have enough troops to effectively flank you, and you're going to need to grab that health and ammo before you have to retreat. Hopefully you've dumped your assault rifle for some sort of plasma weapon....you'll probably want to grab a Needler later on, too. Now, the first group or two of aliens are fairly aggressive and will charge up the ramps, setting them up for a good grenading. Take out as many of the little guys as you can, using human grenades on the shielded lizards whenever possible. If you get a good shot at an Elite, keep firing---plasma shots can stun him, and once you manage to drop his shields, you ownz his ass. Eventually, their numbers and aiming will force you to fall back---I recommend jumping into one of the little indentions near the center of the top structure. They'll start coming up---use grenades to stall them, and watch out for Elites---they're alot harder to push back than the Grunts. After you've killed the early groups or been overrun, fight your way to the back ramp---use a grenade to cover your escape if needed---and run for a boulder, or a tree in an emergency. Have that Needler yet? Dodge from cover to cover firing full clips---it's enough to take out an Elite, and in the open, it's hard to dodge those little pink things (keep that in mind yourself when choosing cover.) Using this strategy, you should be able to take out another group or two, or at least thin their numbers. Now, once the coast is clear, change positions, running around to the opposite side to stock up on ammo, health, whatever--just be sure to keep an eye out to reinforcements. Continuing this way---Needling & running for cover in the open and using plasma weapons and the tower against smaller groups---you should be able to survive. Just make sure not to be surrounded, caught from behind, or left without good cover. Und so, das ist das.

It does this now.

If the contents of the message being replied to and the message being posted are indentical not counting spaces and newline characters, then [NT] will also be appended to the subject.

There may be a few kinks to work out (perhaps a few more double-NT occurrences and the like) but it should no longer be necessary to intentionally delete the comment body to get the automatic NT designation.

Re: God Legendary sucks

Don't know if this was cheating, but it worked. After defeating the first couple landing parties, there will be two Cov dropships depositing at the same time, grab what you need, abandon the tower, and head for the area you drive the jeep down once you get it. This puts you out of the Cov's circle of influence. Use your human pistol to take head shots of grunts and jackels. This is where it got funky. The Human dropship comes in and the remaining Elites turn their attention to it. A battle insues, and...Checkpoint! the Elites buggar off and you're clear to drive away with one or two Marines riding with you. I thought it was a cheap way to get out of battle, but I had spent two hours with that one fight and wasn't going to question my great luck. Haven't played it since to see if would repeat, but it's worth trying if you're still stuck. Goos luck.

Other Good xBox Games?

Reviews are great to find out if a game is of good quality.
reviews are not always good to find out whether one will like a game.

So I come to the community.

I tend to like FPS (that involve brains, unless I'm pissed and then I just like to shoot stuff) along with games like Myth and SC (I like SC for it's addicting qualities). flight sims are also good. and while racing games don't hold my interest for very long, a while ago there was a PS2 dirt bike game that I couldn't stop playing.

I tend to stay away from RPGs and sports oriented games (how many football games do we need anyway?). And I didn’t much care for the little of what I’ve seen and played of Final Fantasy (please don't hunt me down for that comment).

both of the 2 other major games for the xBox, DOA3 and Odd World, don't strike my fancy either. though 4x4 and that one flight sim do. but I haven't read reviews for them yet, so I'll wait before I pick up either.

also, a game able to support multiple players is a giant plus.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Earendil

I'm trying to go through the game on legendary. I've beaten it on all the other modes, and I just started it, but dang it's tough. Are there any tips to keep in mind for survival? (right now, I'm on the 2nd level, if that narrows down things at all.)

Which flight sim? Air Force Delta Storm? It's eye-candy, and no more a flight sim than your arcade's copy of Afterburner is. It's bleeding obvious how little the developers know about any branch of the military, but the planes are extremely pretty. Reviews are calling this title a tech demo for the Xbox, just like it was on the DreamCast. 'Course, I did kill about 45 minutes on this game at my in-Laws' the other day.

I tend to lean towards tactical titles, myself... though I did obtain a copy of Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding. Great reviews, and it includes a resort from where I live. All of its real-life resorts are supposed to be like really being there in many respects. YES - I did obtain an Xbox. Or rather, had a bout of temporary insanity for long enough to preorder one. My packages should ship on the 14th, in time for Xmas.

As far as other titles, I'm watching:

- Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - This continues the award-winning MoH series, but on a much better system. This one starts out with you storming the beaches at Normandy, and so far looks very, very attractive.

- Unreal Championship - An Unreal game for the Xbox. (I've heard it called "Unreal Tournament" also) The preview mag I have says it "could very well become the definitive multiplayer shooter" for the Xbox.

- Bounty Hunter - It looks a bit DeusExish. They're describing it as somethign similar to Soldier of Fortune.

- Max Payne

- The Thing - FINALLY, a game based upon one of my favorite movies of ALL TIME! Due out sometime next year.

- Transworld Surf - Already available, actually, and being published under the Atari label. It's being described as the best surfing title ever, though I want to learn more before plunking down my cash. It's really too bad that older console titles don't decrease in price the same way they do in the PC market.

- Buffy the Vampire Slayer - What can I do? I think Allyson Hannigan and Sarah Michelle Gellar are hotties. And the show has this strange, stupidly addictive quality. Must be the covert pheromone generators they've had in televisions for years.

Buffy is the best thing on television, but...

The game is probably going to be a hack job. The show works because it acknowledges the limitations of it's medium and plays everything to the hilt. How could a game (A game without SMG's voice acting even?) hit the same notes? On the other hand the whole 'delicate blond stalks fleeing giant bloodthirsty monsters' deal will convert, but the humor and the character interaction just aren't possible. I'm afraid the game will be fluff.

To qualify the post title, my television watching is pretty much limited to Buffy reruns, the new Buffy season, football, and the History Channel. 'Reality TV' entertains me on the same level as navel contemplation, fortunately the latter doesn't require a controller, and what else is on these days? Special Unit 2 is sometimes funny, but mostly just the gnome.

Anyway, I think the game's target market is the hardcore fan and the 'just gotta have this type of game' crowd and I wouldn't expect a serious attempt to bring the spirit of the show to it. Prove me wrong if you get it. :-)

Re: Buffy, games, Xbox, racing

Speaking of Buffy games, my sister (who btw recaps "Angel" for Mighty Big TV) has a copy of the Buffy board game. It's actually quite good. Maybe slightly unbalanced in favor of "good" but then that just makes it truer to the series, yes?

I've been watching the FX Buffy reruns, and I'm having to agree with my sister that the show is definitely taking a downturn. After season three there's a definite downturn. Lots of good moments in there still, though.

On the topic of Xbox games (which I guess I'm in the market for because I got an Xbox for my birthday, yea me! And yea my wife who got it for me!), what about racing games? I could get into a good racing sim, but games with loads of powerups bore me.

I've got a buddy who told me that project gotham racing was a decent game, but i'm honestly not sure if it's even out yet. The gameplay is supposed to run along the same lines as Gran Turismo, if my friend is to be believed.

Prety sexy looking game, judging by the commercials.

It looks pretty, but you're still driving in circles...

Honestly, simple eye candy is not enough. Track-racing is so 2600... I'd prolly never purchase a NASCAR game for the same reason, even though NASCAR Heat is one of the three (four?) titles on the Xbox that has box-to-box multiplayer.

I would recommend Halo, but most people who own an X-box have Halo(which is the coolest game on the Xbox, IMHO). So, I recommend Amped. I usually hate games that are anywhere near sports games, but Amped reminded me a lot about the old games. The career mode is challenging, but if you just want to have fun and goof around, play the quick run mode. You should try it before you buy it, though, because it takes a little bit to get used to it, and you don't want to buy something you'll regret. Try it at a friends house because they might be able to help you out a lot more than just trying to figure it out at the store.

Ad for America

Hehe. I'm in the UK, and I just saw an advert on TV for America, trying to persuade us to visit the country. IIRC, our tourism industry was doing so badly because American tourists stopped coming. *Apparently* many of them thought there wouldn't be any food here cos of the foot & mouth...

The actual advert was basically saying how great the country was. They need to be careful where (in which countries) they show the ad though. Some places it could be seen as 'yet more US arrogance'.

MS to take over Take 2?

According to this report Microsoft is considering adding Take2 to it's list of acquired coompanies. What does this have to do with anything here?

Bungie gave the rights to the Myth series to Take2 when Microsoft bought them. However, if T2 is swallowed by the M$ behemoth then the Myth rights would be owned by M$ and could therefore be advanced by Bungie.

Of course, who knows if Bungie would ever want to do anything with the Myth franchise, but it's an interesting thought.

Myth=Storyline...

Cunbelin The Insane wrote on Friday, 12/7/2001 - 9:04 pm:

: LMAO that would just be a bit too ironic. Ok maybe not
: that, but the real irony would be if MS bought Take 2 and
: gave the Myth franchise to someone else!

Unfortunately after the recent lack of support for Myth III: The Wolf Age I would say that the only thing that remains of the Myth series is the extensive storyline that it was based upon. Any and all hope that was supposed to be secured by the release of M3 was denied when Take 2 released the entire Mumbo Jumbo staff that was working on M3.

As it stands now M3 is an unsupported game that was rushed to meet a deadline. The community does not support it as strongly as it should due to the large number of errors and bugs that accompany it, not to mention that it does more to revive the original game then to reinvent it. This is not to say that it doesn't have its own strengths, but only that it does what M2 did for Myth, except that this time it does it to M2.

So even if Take 2 was acquired by M$, I'm afraid that the only thing remaining in the series would be the extensive storyline itself and nothing more. The genre of the Myth series needs to be reinvented and unless this is done then the game will simply remain a rehash of days long past.

But, of course, that's such a ludicrous idea that I won't mention it.

Pumping Xbox output to or through your PC for better quality...

I'm trying to figure a way to utilize my old PC's monitor screen with the Xbox I should hopefully be recieving in the next two weeks. Now, I could obtain an expensive HDTV card and pump HDTV signals in, which might be nice, but I'm thinking I'll have to settle for S-Video or coaxial input on some PCI card. One old enough that a Pentium 233 won't be overtaxed supporting it.

I'd likely also pump audio through my PC as well, however I could.

To be honest, I'd be afraid to get my hopes up on doing this at all. It's a tricky prospect... and the official Stance of MS is that it can't be done.

The PC wouldn't be doing anything but passthru, so the specs are irrelevant.

Moreover, since Xbox Halo only outputs 640x480, it won't help that game *too* much.

What you really want is a TV tuner box that has RGB out and S-Video in. Check Radio Shack.

As for the audio, check places like Cambridge Audio for some of their inexpensive surround-sound sets used for PCs that support 5.1; some aren't very expensive and offer surprising quality.

Well... except that a television doesn't even operate at 640x480. There could be major gains from composite or S-video inputs.

Right... I've been comparing products and sites. Maybe I'll try to compile a list of things when I'm done.

One plus is that I could still sit at my PC when I wanted to game. Another option that has become interesting since last night: I might be able to funnel the Xbox output via USB (I've not found a good FW solution yet, I'm afraid) to my TiBook's screen. Viola - mobility. Now all I'd need would be a power outlet. (And a honkin' huge bag to carry my box and games in ;-)

Full motion video? Via USB?

Lay off the crack pipe, Noc. Not gonna happen.

Even with FW, you need a way to take the Xbox's output and encode it as DV, and then read it. Maybe you could pump your S-Video out through a Sony camcorder, input into your TiBook and watch yourself play Halo in an iMovie screen, but I'm guessing you're going to experience an intolerable lag between your control input and on-screen actions in this case.

Sound and light

I have a Formac ProTV card (Mac PCI card) which is excellent, and (I realised recently) supports NTSC input, meaning I could actually import an XBox and run it through that. The only problem being power supply and the lack of OS X drivers for the card.

Margaret has a set of Cambridge Audio 5.1 speakers which are absolutely stunning, and very cheap (less than £100 I think). I have a set of 2.1 Logitech speakers (the X2) which have excellent sound quality, and the speakers look lovely too. (there is a 4.1 set of them too ...)

Not yet.

There was originally supposed to be a VGA adapter. Then there wasn't (MS has a FAQ that says "no" to this question).

Then I heard it rumored there might be again. At this point, wait and see.

Aye... VGA Adapter here... (URL inside)

Yeah, Ferrex located this item, which should become available before Xmas. Supposedly, it acts as a pass-through setup for your PC or Mac, so that you can switch to your Xbox when desired.

It'll be interesting to see.

Recording Halo Games (it's a snap)

I can't have been the first to figure this out. it was so friggin easy...I should have thought of it first. but I didn't, my bro did.

so I'm sitting down to a Game of Halo when my bro says "just thought of this last night....but why can't we record the Halo agmes with the VCR?" my first thought was naaa, that wouldn't work....well, yes it would. slipped a tape in the VCR and hit record, bingo, that's all it took :-)

now everyones set up will be different. right now everything we have goes through the VCR, then out to the TV and the stero. all we did was used our VCRs 2nd input, and flipped the VCR channle over(which you have to do anyway to play Halo) and hit record!

Any problems with this, just ask. I'm not pro in this area but I know a thing or two. at the least I can start naming cable colors, and how big around the input holes are ;-)
