Well, sure, that works.

Of course, I'm assuming you're not going to want to mail out VHS tapes so we can watch you play Halo... and if you digitize that file, it's gonna be a massive download.

Still.. better than nothing. Perhaps a collection of interesting gameplay clips, heavily edited, might be possible.

Saw a thread over at IGN asking which bands will and won't touch your Xbox hard drive. I've heard that you can rip your CDs to your Xbox hard drive before and play them while playing. I've got a couple of questions for you Xbox owners:

1. Is this true? Does it apply to all games or just some?

2. What format does the Xbox use?
     i. (If MP3) Can you edit items such as bitrate so you can have very high quality music?

3. Does this slowdown gameplay?

I got some answers. Xbox can rip em with only some games. Project Gotham can use tracks that have been ripped. Halo cannot. So only some games can use the user tracks. It takes a short amount of time to rip from the cd, so my guess is that it rips the song directly as a wav file. The bitrate is most likely 128. Thats what most audio files on cd's are. And it will only rip from storebought cd's. The xbox will not even read a burnt cd. I wish someone would find a way to get around that though.

Whoops, i meant to post (on the 2nd one) The audio files do not seem to have any affect on framerate. So i would say it does not slow the game down at all. If it does, it is only a fraction of a framerate, cuz i have my xbox running on HDTV and i dont see any loss of quality or speed. =)

In reply to: Re: Xbox & Music

Xbox will read burned CDRW discs and store bought discs, just not CDR discs.
About half of the released games support custom music:
PG Racing,Tony Hawk2x, 4X4 Evo2, Transworld Surf, Amped, NHL Hitz 2002 are among those that do.

Also, uncompressed WAV files don't have a bitrate...that's a compression statistic.

Doesn't slow down at all, i think thats due to the fact that most of the data is transfered to the hard drive which constructs the portion of the game you are in, so its just pointing to your music instead of its own. Not sure about this but i may infact speed up load times for these games, because they shouldn't need to load their music to the hard drive.

Since the Xbox isn't connected to the Internet, it doesn't connect to any servers to download identification tags for the music. I'm wondering how you label songs you have ripped. Is there an on-screen keyboard you have to type band names, albums, and song titles into or something?

Yes. And time consuming it is, to type by joystick! Fortunately, when MS starts supporting Xbox broadband in earnest, I'm sure they'll have some sort of CD lookup available (cddb or whatever it is MediaPlayer for windows uses).

And to your earlier points ... I'm sure it rips to WMA format, but since there's not (yet) a way to get at your Xbox HD data, it doesn't matter much. The songs don't take up much space. I've ripped a couple CDs and it shows them using up "4000 blocks", whatever that means. For comparison, a single save in Oddworld takes about 23 blocks, and my current Halo game (I'm about half way through) takes 233 blocks.

The only game I have that supports soundtracks is Tony Hawk 2x. It's unfortunate that the rounds in career mode take about a minute and a half, and then the game switches to the next song! D'oh! Freestyle mode isn't much better, even if you choose a longer song, it'll repeat the same one until you switch maps. Oh well. The good thing is that I haven't really noticed any impact on game play, though the game doesn't mix well with quieter passages in some music. It expects the sort of soundtrack that is delivered with the game.

I'd love to have my own soundtracks in MP Halo, Cel Damage and Panty Fighter ... er I mean Dead or Alive 3. Maybe there's some yet to be discovered secret code which unlocks that feature in one of those games.

Of course, there's always the option of turning down the in-game music and cranking up Winamp or iTunes on the computer!

(nothing major but... thought you guys would like to know) Earlier today, I was playing Halo on Heroic in the level "Two Betrails". I had just reached the second blue shiny core - the one surrounded by lots of flood - and I died inside the building before destroying it. In my hand was an assault rifle when I died. I was also equiped with a rocket launcher. Now, I saved and turned the game off. When I loaded up that mission again, in my hand is a shotgun. Thats odd... I had an assault rifle before... The real glitch is that when i squeeze the trigger, my shotgun is kicking hard at 100x normal speed - fireing assault rifle rounds. It reloads as a shotgon, has the recoil of a shotgun, but shoots the speed and ammo of an assault rifle. Changing weapons will revert the gun back to normal, but if I die or load up that checkpoint again, I still have my blazing fast, but rather weak shotgun. Just thought I'd fill you guys in.

Twenty million is the installed worldwide base of the PS2. It doesn't mean "jack" since that's the potential market for a title (if localized for every region where the PS is sold).

Thirty one million is the combined installed base of PS1 and PS2 machines in N. America; or about thirty times as many as current installed base of GameCube and Xbox put together. This isn't insignificant since the PS2 can play PS1 games, and older titles are still capable of generating revenue from the owners of either machine.

Six million is the N. American installed base of the PS2-- in other words, about six times as many as current installed base of GameCube and Xbox put together.

The sales figures quoted for the PS1 and PS2 are also N. America only. The "SCEA" in the quoted portion of the article stands for "Sony Computer Entertainment America".

The article also mentions that Sony expects revenues from the various PlayStation consoles and games to be about $1B-- just for *December*. Now, that's gross revenues, not profit, of course, but just for comparison that's the amount analysts expect Microsoft to *lose* on the Xbox for the year.

None of this means anything so droll as "PS rules, Xbox drools" but it does give one an idea of exactly how steep the uphill climb is that both Nintendo and Microsoft face if they hope to unseat the PlayStation franchise sometime over the next 2-3 years. And if the PS3 is also backwards compatible with the PS2, and is easier to develop for than the PS2...

And yes, Microsoft is a big, rich company. So is Sony.

Microsoft will likely have 1,000,000 sold by the end of the year. As they start launching in other countries, the rate of growth will increase. I don't see too much of a problem.

This kind of backwards compatibility while nice, isn't the best thing for Sony. People will see someone playing a game with a PS1's graphics on the shiny PS2, and their idea of the system may be hurt. Obviously only stupid people will do that, but that is your average [stereotype]trailer park console player.[/stereotype]

I haven't confirmed this, but one of my friends was saying that Microsoft was working to bring the cost of each unit down to $300 and then to sell them at $100. That would likely help market penetration just a little bit. Wether that is true or not I have no idea.

In keeping backwards compatibility with the PS2 (and PS1) you inherently bring with it the shortfalls of the hardware. Either that or you have processing power several orders of magnitude faster and then just emulate the bitch.

I see a huge challenge. Even a year after release, two older machines are selling at a rate nearly equal to MS' new "killer" console. If those rates were to continue, with MS outselling Sony at an average rate of, say, 3:1 (higher than current, but allowing for Sony slowdowns and MS launching internationally) then it would take over 5 years for the Xbox installed base to surpass that of Sony's machines.

Is it impossible for it to happen faster? No, of course not. But neither is it guaranteed.

Perhaps... but that's been an issue for over a year and so far doesn't seem to have hurt sales one bit.

That does seem a tad... specious.

The GameCube is much cheaper to manufacture, and Nintendo still loses money selling them at $199. To suggest that somehow MS can bring the price that low seems wishful thinking. Add up the cost (wholesale) of an 8GB drive, a DVD drive, an ethernet card, a Celeron processor, etc. and you reach $300 pretty quick, even allowing for volume discounts.

Usually this isn't a problem; each successive console is just so powerful compared to the last that adding compatibility is more a function of available time than processing resources.

I wouldn't suggest that the PS3 be backwards compatible with the PS1, of course... but that doesn't mean they couldn't do it.

Seeing as how wild and crazy rumours or theories seem to be in demand...

Halo 2 has been rumoured to be in development even now. Of course, this has been pretty well discounted by everyone as Bungie is taking a well-deserved break.

Of course, MSFT owns the rights to Halo. Jason Jones has never really worked on a sequel, iirc. After all, he was making Myth: TFL during the creation of Marathon 2, and was making Halo when Myth 2 had the spotlight.

Therefore, it is certainly possible that Bungie is working on other things (in addition to Phoenix), and some other studio within MSFT is working on Halo 2.

Yeah there is short (2 page) Interveiw over at Inside Mac Games. Some interesting shots a Halo production such as:
Interview: Bungie's Alexander Seropia

IMG: Did Bill Gates or a screaming Steve Ballmer ever pop in to say hello?

Seropian: Bill came by for a tour of the studio. Pretty cool to meet him. He was really interested in our process for making games, which he hadn't been exposed to before. He plays them too, in fact I think he was playing some multiplayer Halo over Thanksgiving.

Also some stuff about the change in roles for Seropian himself now that he is no longer a CEO...

But perphas the most important is this:
IMG: Are you working on anything new? Any announcements coming soon?

Seropian: Yes.

Nobody seems to mention this… but the interview contains a HUGE spoiler about the ending level of Halo, there was no spoiler warning, this really pissed me off…

How unprofessional…

Okay, so I finally give in and order an Xbox. ("And yea verily, there was much rejoicing and 'I told you so's in the land.") During the insane wait for mine to arrive, I've been using my in-Laws' box. There's only one problem... and it manifests the most in Halo, even though I play Halo the most.

Motion sickness
I go for 15 - 30 minutes, and have to put down the controller and hobble away. I can have queasiness for hours afterward. I've absolutely never had it this bad from a game before. And on desktop systems it's mostly old, old games which do it. Like Doom. I can't remember getting it from Quake. Shoot, I used to play Quake for hours. I jokingly refer to myself as a "Reformed Quaker".

The cause? Well, I'm a nurse in real life, so I know the basics... my brain can't match up the visual input with what my inner-ear is telling it, so it gets confused. A knowitall friend of mine - no, really... he knows a hell of a lot ;-) - tells me that they've discovered that a small amount of head-bob in games makes for less motion sickness. Too much head-bob can cause motion sickness, and a total absence can cause a LOT of motion sickness in people. I don't know, but I don't see any head-bob in Halo. There is also that the frame rate is rarely better than 30fps.

Where's it coming from?
So... what'm I doing? Well, on Sunday night I called and cancelled my Xbox order. I sent back accessories and games from multiple companies. With much frustration.

And I've also been attempting to get over it. Every morning after work (I work nights, with kiddos) I think to myself, "You WUSS. Go back, get UP ON the HORSE," and head over to my in-Laws' place after work. The horse bucks me off, stomps on me a few times and sends me home in my truck. Lather, Rinse, Repeat the next day. Hey - I rarely get motion-sick in cars with books anymore, just because I used to read so much as a kid, so I wondered if I could develop a tolerance. It may take awhile, or it may never happen... so far I'm not making progress.

The thing that I'm wondering, though, is whether I'm the only one... whether this is something relating specifically to me - and possibly to an accident which I had roughly a year ago (in which a local bus demolished my car, with me in it - their fault) - or if anyone else is having difficulty like this. It currently appears to be specific to Halo... but that's the #1 reason that I got the Xbox. No other titles so far, including Air Force Delta Storm and others have so far produced these symptoms. I'm told that "Super Monkey Ball" on the Gamecube would drive me absofreaklutely insane. I can believe that. ;-)

I've got to tell you... after all of the time that I spent on various websites related to Halo, and money as well (lots of money... it can be expensive to go to E3, keep subscriptions, etc.), I felt I just had to play this game at the end of it all. But right now I'm in a state of frustration.

What can I do about it?
Some say, "Eat ginger-snaps to control the nausea!" I'll admit I'd never heard that one, but I don't discount herbal remedies. I've seen them work, and my Mosby's drug manual even comes with a section on them (and their interactions with pharmaceuticals) this year. I've thought about laying down some cash on an antiemetic like Dramamine, but is ANY game really worth a dependence of sorts on a drug? I have a hard enough time getting myself to take legitimate drugs.

Tomorrow: Play. Drop my controller. Rest a bit before hobbling out to my truck and driving home. Heh, if I'm going to continue to submit myself to this Hell - though I chose not to this morning, after taking care of a tougher kiddo - maybe I should just get an Xbox anyway. But I'm seeing if I can kick this. I'm an Army Sergeant, and it annoys me to no end when things like this come 'round. I don't like feeling weak. So I'll keep trying, where possible. If I can't beat this, then I guess I'll never finish Halo. :-/

Wow, that really really sucks!

Here are some things that you might have tried, might not have tried, or maybe never try. Just what I thought up.

Distance from the TV... see if you can play it in many different settings. Who knows maybe it is several factors that lead to nausea.

TV or HDTV? Since the FPS will be different for each of those perhaps the different refresh rates will help you weather the flood?

Have a timer set for five minutes. Take a one minute break, and break again after five. It would stink but you might not get all that nauseus or maybe will develop a bit of an immunity.

Custom design a chair that will bob up and down for you. Those ones with hydraulics might be a likely candidate and then adjust till the problem goes away.

Not to make light of your situation, but spin around for several minutes before playing Halo. When you return your inner ear will take Halo and be grateful!

Perhaps if you could funnel it through to your computer the refresh rates (if that is the problem) will be different enough to negate the negative effects.

Damn, that really really sucks. Hope you can eke out a solution. Halo really is the best. Good Luck!

Your framerate will never be better than 30 FPS. NTSC is 29.97 FPS, interlaced. Unless you have TV that supports 480p, you're not going to get better than that. 480p is still 29.97 FPS, but it will be less hard on the eyes.

:( No, I haven't heard of this, not at all.

I certainly have the reading-in-cars problem, which pisses me off to no end. But despite doing it repeatedly and often, I haven't kicked it any more than slamming my head against the wall makes it hurt less. Not to disparage you, but... well, it might not get better ::cringes:: Keep trying nonetheless.

I might advise checking with Microsoft. Perhaps they've heard of this, have some magic cure. Right. But try—this is a very, very sad thing... :)

Dude, that sux that you waited for years for Halo and you get motion sick. Hey, try taking some Dramamine or some kinda pill that will help. I used to get sick when playing Half-Life, I took some pills and I didn't hav to worry anymore. No, I'm not talking about Black Beuties or Acid, though it might work.

So you took them to solve the initial problem. I am guessing that after a while you were able to stop taking the drugs and still play Half life, correct?

Heh, yeah... good luck is right. Maybe I can ask Microsoft for a wetware patch to get rid of it, but then my brain might be open to funnily coincidental ASP exploits. ;-)

Hey Vec, I just found your sayonara post at HBO. I hope that whatever motivated you to leave there won't keep you out of the rest of the community! Not all of us drink the Kool-Aid, or try to force others to. =)

Just givin' 'em a bit of a rest. I'm like chocolate—great tasting (despite the fact that you KNOW it has no nutritional value and is terrible for the body and mind), but you can get awfully sick of it in large quantities.

Or something.

They have wrist bands out for sea sickness, it could be a good alternative to taking any sorts of drugs, I would try them out.

Are you flying, or driving anything when this occures the most ?

My brother had a huge problem getting sick every time he played StarFox 64. While he doesn't with any other game, guessing it was caused because we were playing with a split screen and doing loops .

If you playing co-op you may be looking down at the other players screen too much.

Not sure how your looking at the screen but that could make a huge difference too, if your looking up to it or down , and if there is a window or open area behind it. Try having it a few inches above your direct line of site, this area is where your eyes generaly are directed and against a static background. And don't dim the lights, it actully puts strain on your eyes and could be causing enough discomfort to cause the diszzy feeling.

(but not, unfortunately an antidote)

When I first went out to sea on a submarine, I thought I was going to die. When a sub is surfaced, it has very little to stabilize it from bobbing and rolling a *lot*. Of course, after diving, everything is smooth sailing. I'll never forget my first deployment, though ... I had just been assigned to the boat, and they had been on maneuvers off Maui, and were swinging back by Pearl Harbor before heading west. A few others were onboard the landing boat with me, but I was the only "newbie".

The little landing boat itself didn't set me off. I'd been sailing before, and never prone to motion sickness. As long as I could see the horizon, i was fine. Once I got below on the sub, though, I was sure I would blow. The worst part about it was that the muster for the new arrivals was being held in the galley. What a welcome THAT would be...

Then just as the rolling of the boat was becoming unbearable, and I was sure my career as a sub sailor was about to get off to a very messy start, something weird happened. Something in my brain just clicked, and I realized Aha! The reason I'm all off balance and things feel weird even tho they look stable is that the boat is rolling all over the place. After my conscious realization of the reason for the queasin', and after a few minutes concentrating on it to let it sink in, I never had another problem on any Naval vessel.

Now I don't know what if anything you can glean from that experience. Reading your note really brought it back to me, though. I was similarly surprised by my physical reaction after boarding the sub. I couldn't for the life of me understand why I would suddenly get motion sick.

Part of the problem may be, with a game as immersive as Halo, you find yourself shutting out the environment you're actually in. I know that's been my experience playing through the first half of the game. I get totally lost in it (cool beans, eh? :-). Perhaps when you start getting these twinges, if you make an effort to consciously "pull out" of the game a little bit, give yourself a different perceptual context, maybe it'll click for you.

I know that sounds like a lot of hooey, but ... it worked for me IRL!

I don't have any problem playing Halo on our TV but my wife does. Her eyes will start to water after a while and then she starts sniffing a lot. It gets worse if we play co-op, probably due to the lower resolution.

Have you tried playing Halo on a different TV? If not, borrow the box from the in-laws and see if it makes any difference on your TV. It would be nice to know if the TV is part of the problem.
