Hey not bad. Here are a few tips:
1.) When changing the pan of multiple parts in a song, try not to set them so that when listening through head phones you hear more of one part in one ear than the other. This is an imbalance and doesn't sound very appealing. The way you set it up makes the contrabass stand out A LOT in the right ear. Try setting the contrabass in the center (about 64 in SongWriter or the middle of the dial in Finale). When I moved it towards the center, it instantly corrected the balance.
2.)Bring out the moving parts when another part is holding a long note. Crescendos and decrescendos add a lot to the overall impact of a piece of music.
3.) Keep doing what you're doing!!!

what do you mean? the pan? to change volume, pan, or channel, go to window, then Instrument List. this will open your list of instruments, pan and channels. usually, you want the low parts towards the middle, around 64. the pan is the direction from which the sound originates. you had the contrabass set on 120. this means it will come out predominantly through the right head phone. at 64, it is centered. think of a concert performance; if you have more of one part or one instrument that is dominant, you dont want it all on one side of the stage.
to balance the piece, fool around with the pan and instrument volume settings in the Instrument List. also, add crescendos and decrescendos to create motion and emotion. if everything is set at one volume throughout the WHOLE PIECE, it gets monotonous. if u want i can email you my rendition of Jonathan Churchill's "Halo Love Theme." i also rearranged the Truth and Reconciliation Suite that is on this site. its under "Truth and Reconciliation Suite 2". my email is ghstm5@aol.com if you have any questions. if you ever have questions about anything music related, dont hesitate to ask. i play b flat clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, tenor and bari sax, trumpet, tuba, and guitar.

oh, so that's how you do it.. thanks! I also rearanged the truth and reconciliation suite. I arranged it for 3 alto saxes, 2 tenor saxes and 2 bari saxes. it's still a work in progress but i'm going to post it on the site... there are still a few notes out of playing range of the instruments but i'm working on fixing that. I've actually just started playing an instrument at the beginning of this year.
I play alto sax and bari sax. thanks again!

your welcome. not a problem. any time you have a question, feel free to ask. i went through the same thing. learning how to play an instrument is a challenge but i guarantee that it pays off. if it helps when you're rearranging the piece and the notes are out of range, try dropping the instrument to a lower octave. keep doing what you're doing.
