The real unanswered question is of course why is there Halo ? Seems to me it is a lab to study the flood, I mean why build a huge artificial world with incredible destructive power to blow up itself ?

I'm still lost on why make it so big unless that is the only way to create that big of an explosion, then why the different enviorments? My guess thus far is simply that it was a way to study the flood and be able to contain it if nesscary.

Now my question is here we blow up the ring what happens to the ring fragments ? What if they land on some other world ? heh I have to say there is a shitload of possibility and it reeks of a sequel (c=.

Most of Halo would either crash into or go into orbit around Threshold. And it certainly wouldn't have fallen apart in that spectacular manner, but poetic license, I suppose...

Note: Almost all quotes that follow were heard at LOW volume in the middle of the night, so wild inaccuracy is more than likely.
IIRC, Cortana said Halo "...doesn't kill Flood!" and was made to wipe out all sentient life in the galaxy. Again, IIRC 343 Guilty Spark then made a comment about when all the devices were activated it would eliminate all beings of sufficient "violence" to sustain the Flood.
Could the Flood feed off of not meat but violence? They don't seem to eat their victims -- they assimilate them. Perhaps the Halo (all of them, assuming they're all shaped the same) is meant not to cause their destruction at all but to contain and control them. Maybe they were hibernating in their storage areas until the humans and Covenant began brawling on the surface. Remember all the doors ripped open in the Flood's charming little introduction? I don't think even "faith-blinded zealots" can be that stupid.
Another note: 343 Guilty Spark was left behind to do something. Why? For the Forerunners? They're not around any more, what do they care about the Flood? For his own / the Forerunner's philanthropic purposes, like emptying the galaxy of civilization (at the very least). So... why?

There's one weapon that grunts use, but you can't get since it explodes as it drops from a Grunt's hands. But otherwise we have the pistol, AR, sniper rifle, shotgun, rocket launcher, plasma rifle, plasma pistol and needler.

So the Forerunners are mysteriously absent. Kinda reminds you of another group of people that built a giant ring habitat, don't it?

Also some guys from a couple of other Bungie games.

Ok off the bat, 4 player multiplayer rocks with rocket launcher jeep jousts! But I have a couple questions... can you use other vechicles in multiplayer besides the ghost, scorpion, and warthog? And what about weapons? I'm still on level 6 but I still haven't seen the flamethrower and am worried it isn't included and won't be in multiplayer either. Wasn't it on some screenshots in game mags?? Are there options in multiplayer that can be unlocked when you beat the game on normal, herioc, etc like goldeneye?

So I finally finished it. Wow. Im exhausted. Antoerh bungie classic. That last warthog race was fricking nastynastynasty. The only way I could make it (with a whopping 10 seconds to spare) was to ignore Cortana when she told me to stop and wait for evac. 'Uh no dont think so, I know whats gonna happen. Pedal to the metal.'

So anyone thats read the book, how does it tie into the game? Purely a back history of the covenant/human war? Does the book mention the Flood at all?

Oh and did anyone else notice the structure of the sparks eye? Looks like a familiar symbol we all know and love.

Much of the book details the growth and development of the Master Chief and his fellow Spartans. As far as I remember, the Flood are not mentioned or alluded to in any way. Only the very last few pages actually brings them to Halo.

Alright I'm through the first time on Normal starting Heroic, heres my verdict, Halo is a truly awsome game, it's only flaw is that it has too much stuff (c=. Basically my biggest problem is I don't ever want to drive that damn warthog again (c= on the other hand, I could shotgun hunters till kingdom come.

First level is alot of fun, and some really sweet level design, though confusing at times (namely when playing at 5am) I think I will go back on this level and try going it without using the AR.

Second level, I could do this one over and over and over again, I love the defense with the marines it just rules. That last part on the rocks, that will be (after some modification) the Shadow of the Mountain for co-op man I can just see it a sqaud of Mark V's holding the many byways, running sorties with the jeep. It will be beautiful. Right now it kicks ass too (c=.

Third level, I'm not sure if it's my TV setting or what, but the level itself feels too light in the beginning, though it certainly is alot of fun, great sniping fun there. Onboard the ship, there is nothing as satisfying as emptying a clip into a cloaked sword covie and then applying the final melee blow to knock him on his ass, ok take that back, the only thing more satisfying than dodge killing a hunter (c=. The ship itself does get repetitive in it's hallways, but I suppose it's reality based (c=.

Fourth level I like it, getting the RL is a big plus, waves are beautiful, just waiting for water craft (c=. I love the effect on the sand, I just sat around shooting with the Jeep's gun for a while.

Fifth level FUCK YEAH! this place rules, on the last bridge I could never decide what was more fun, stealing the banshee, or sticking a plasma grenade on it as the covie flew away (c=, I must have spent an hour trying to get past this part and I loved every minute of it... well except that one time the Wraith got off a lucky shot just as I was rodding it.

Sixth level, cinematics=cool, shotgun=cool, race of explosive parasites=cool, having to fight two sides fighting each other=cool. The thing I was kind of bothered by with this level was the sudden change of pace of the overall game, it started feeling more frantic more twitch, I mean I see the creative choice to go that way, but my more memorable play was with the slower paced combat against the Covies.

Seventh Level, Ok this one did get old, not OMG I HATE THIS! old but I would have liked a change of pace from, stop, blow up flood, move on, stop, blow up flood, move on, though I liked the monitor's mindless babbling, and the final sequence was extremely fun when I realized that the pistol owneth. By the way I wonder if the "Monitor" was a Myth reference, yeah it's a stretch but bear with me, the Black Company series of books featured a charactor known as The Monitor who overlooked the grave of a evil and horribly powerful sorcerer and his minions, the Myth series was loosely based off the Black Company series.

Eighth level, Ok so it was pretty cool, but I could have done with a change of scenery as I'd spent the longest time doing this level before (c=. took me a while to realize the realy key to using the Banshee against infantry is that holding back on the control stick causes you to hover (c=.

Ninth level Ok this was alot of fun despite being similar scenery, the canyon areas were oftentimes alot of fun, but the really shining part of this level was the onboard fighting and the partially ruined ship. I'd have liked some more stuff like the captain's encasing around to liven it up a bit more, but hey it was still pretty cool (c=.

Tenth level, This one was great fun, I loved the ending, reminded me of Hang Brain. How did you guys get to the last two switches ? I cheated (c= well only sort of, I jump crouched to the platform.

Ten and a half, Ok I can see how the idea was for a pulse pounding conclusion to it, but after the umpteenth time I died cuz I can't drive that jeep worth shit it totally lost me, and I want to fly the broadsword!

Well I was going to try and tell you some good stories of mine but there are just so damn many really cool and fun parts I'm at a loss, My favorite thing to do besides dodge killing hunters is bashing things, melee attack just so rules, nothing like peppering a few grunts with shots then emptying the rest of the clip at the one elite running in and bashing him a couple times to finish him off, hmm I think I will have to try to change my jump key so I can try jumping in and bashing guys (c=.

Anyway, there it is, forgive me if I fucked up on the level numbers I was just remembering events and their order, ultimately I really am looking forward to Online multiplay even Xbox online will be pretty sweet (specially if there is co-op). I think the best way to sum up graphics is that you compare them to the real world not other games. I will spoil away the endings on higher levels if they are different but give me a couple more days I want to play through all the levels. Oh yeah almost forgot, despite the lack of fuel rod (besides on the banshee) and flamethrower I didn't really miss them, though I was rather frustrated to not be able to pick up the guns off the grunts.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: My Halo Story

Yeah I didn't really like the Flood. I realize they're probably just mindless drone thingies bent on killing and reproducing but I just didn't like how they rushed. It turned into a twitchfest and annoyed me after all the great combat with the Covenant.

As for stories..well the first time I encountered a Hunter I emptied every piece of ammo for both my guns into it. If I was smart I would've strafe circled and try to get around the shield but I panicked and once I ran out of ammo it charged me. Just as it was about to smash me with it's shield I remembered about the melee attacks and killed it with the AR in one hit. Close one. Come to think of it that was probably the only time I used the melee attack other than killing sleeping grunts. I wish you could map the left thumbstick button to it =/

Then there was the time I shot a banshee from the tank as it was coming straight at me on a strafing run. It blew up in the air but the wreckage kept coming and smashed into the tank, killing half the marines riding on it.

A shame you didn't like the hog though. That last level was pretty cool. Trying to jump a gap..missing and falling five stroies..swerving pillars and jumping over fleeing covenant. Mm good stuff. I bet there's quite a bit of extra stuff in there if you stay on top. At one point this covenant dropship came down and was practically on top of me..I wonder what it wouldv'e done if I didn't fall down to the lower level..

In reply to: My Halo Story

I am not a console person. All the demos on the x-box made my eye's glave over in boredom. Basically the only games I have played in the last 4 years has been Myth and card games. I played all the way through the solo campain on co-op on a friends machine. So here is my thoughts on Halo.

Things that exceeded my expectations:
- The weapons all seem to be balanced quite well... except for maybe the shotgun... it always seemed like the best weapon for any situation. Take the needler for example, early on I felt that it was not a good gun to have since it ran out of ammo so quick. But later on in one level against the flood there was a lot of needler ammo around... and it was very satifying to fill and ennemy rushing you with glowing needles and see a big pink explosion as they went off.
- the explod-a-flood remind me of Wights from Myth and were very amusing.
- The outdoor levels were the best FPS game play I have ever played.
- Co-op is the key to success for me. I play Myth co-op all the time and Halo co-op was very very fun. I particularly enjoyed "accidently" blasting my buddy with the tank.
- I was shocked when I realized the sniper rifle was affected by wind.
- The vehicle physics were incredible. At one point my buddy was on the ground fighting and I was goofing off pushing vehicles off a cliff just because I liked the physics of it all(and I almost landed one on top of him). When you destroy a covie vehicle bits and pieces go flying everywhere... instead of just a firey explosion effect.
- the "only carry 2 weapon" thing is a very good idea, especially for co-op. If your buddy does not have a needler gun then he cannot pick up the ammo leaving it for you.
- the sound and music was very good. Some reviewers said the grunts were annoying but they were my favorite.... like annoying little kids to chase around.
- There was no reason for me to complain about frame rate issues. Maybe some people have higher standards than I?

Things that disappointed a little:
- Indoors levels sometimes get repetitive. The level looking for "The Index"(level 8?) was particularly repetitive. The outdoor levels were the best part in my opinion and I felt that there was a little too much indoor action.
- I had really hoped for much more Marathon tie ins. Other than just symbols and the "Spnkr" on the missle launcher. I know that just having the Pfhor or Durandal pop up would have made no sense... but I am sure there would be a way to get one of the two in there creatively. Overall the story was quite good... but not excellent....
- The sniper rifle was very cool.... but there didn't seem to be many oppurtunities to use it.
- The flashlight was cool... but there was little need for it. Maybe there should have been a sequence where there is no other light but your flashlight.
- For some reason the Assault Rifle shooting sound did not thrill me and I would ditch it ASAP only because the other weapons sounded better. I like the sounds of a rifle from the movie Aliens or the Half-life machine gun sounded cool too.
- It's too bad there was not any ambiant life(except for insects).
- I was going to list that I thought a mouse and keyboard was better control... but then I thought about it and realized how long I played Halo and that if it was mouse and keyboard my wrists would be very sore... but that was not a problem with the controller.

Bottom line, it is probably the best first person shooter. However, I am not going to buy an x-box for it.

Really? I never have a problem with my mouse and keyboard but after playing Halo for about 3 hours straight my wrists and fingers really cramped up and got sore.

My whole body was cramped up and sore after I finished it the
first time. I think that's because I was so tensed up from trying
to drive that damn hog through the last level over and over again.

Stuff I dug:

The physics. Can't say enough about 'em. Try driving the hog on the ice
and you lose all traction. That rocked. In MP, throwing a grenade at the
oddball blows it halfway across the map. Sweet.

The AI. The Marines that had my back just kicked ass. They died too quick,
but other than that, no complaints.

The Island. 'Nuff said.

The Control Room.

Stuff I didn't dig:

The flood story seemed a bit like an afterthought to me. Like they were looking
for a pat answer.

The run for the Index. Go, stop, kill, try not to die. This got old pretty damn quick.

Not enough swamp.

Too much snow, not enough time to use the tank or enough marines to back me up
with it.

Fighting the flood and the covenant all on my own with no marine cover anywhere.

No survivors of the Halo other than you, Cortana and 343 Guilty Spark.

Unanswered questions:

Just what is the deal with the Covenant? Why is our destruction the will of the gods?

Is that fighter slip capable, or are we just gonna float in space 'til the air runs out?

How goes the war back in the inner colonies? Earth can't be faring well, what with Reach
and all its shipbuilding capacites melted down to slag.

How do you top Halo? What's the sequel going to be, Sphereworld?

How much different, will the Mac/PC storyline be, if at all?

So many subtle things too like I think I already mentioned how one marine jumped out of the jeep when a plasma nade was thrown at him, saving the lives of those of us still in the hog.

Well, apparently the Flood concept is a little deeper than your average facehugger/zombie thing but they really didn't explain it (maybe in another book?). Same with the Halo..they never explain _how_ it is a weapon.
My main complaint with the Flood was they just rushed you..none of the great squad tactics the covenant displayed.

: Not enough swamp.

Yeah, that was such a great atmosphere. Now that I think back on it I'm reminded of Dagoba. What with the crashed ships and overgrown jungly feel and all..

: Too much snow, not enough time to use the tank or enough

Heh, when I got the tank about 5 marines jumped on but then half them were killed after a Banshee I shot crashed into us. They were a little too vulnerable sitting on the tank like that..I would've liked to see them using it as cover and advancing on foot behind it like in a scene from Saving Private Ryan.

: No survivors of the Halo other than you, Cortana and 343
: Guilty Spark.

I don't understand how this can be unless the HQ was right on one of the cracks. They should've had time to get to some shuttles or dropships before all the atmosphere was lost..Or maybe Flood killed them all.

There are other Halo rings...

I doubt they would change the storyline except hopefully to explain some things in more detail.

I just liked the Marine comments...

"Don't bother getting up" (To a dead elite)
"How does it feel to be dead?" (after shooting a dead grunt again)
"He's lost his damn mind!" (About me, after I sideswiped one too many with the warthog)

Deeper than average, perhaps; but the flood angle just struck
me as tacked on, a sort of deus ex machina for sci-fi stories.
Again, this could be because they have more plans for a
sequel, but they still could have handled it better and given you
more insight into the covenant.

Yeah, they should be a little smarter about riding in uncovered
positions in unsecured areas.

Yeah...Or Cortana's lying...

I know, but are we just gonna go find the rest? How?

Maybe. But I'm hoping for more depth at the very least. Perhaps
the left out weapons and vehicles as well. That and the ability to
mod it, make my own levels and just go nuts with scenarios.
