It would have been interesting to find out at least a little bit about the covenant culture like we did with the Pfhor in Marathon. The Pfhor were not so scarey I guess but they definatly seemed alien and different which kept my interest.

A flat world would be cool... sail your ship to the ends of the earth and fall off.

My question, what were the wall hugging hippos? What it the little flood things? those are small hippos.

You clearly don't understand how much that would impact troop morale. That and the cock-fighting ring down in Engineering are the bread and butter of the PoA's crewmen.

Events passed pretty damn quickly in Halo... I think things happened fast enough that their wasn't time to divert said Cov forces. And the Covenant only found Reach by a clever little tracer anyhoo, in the book. They still don't know the locations of Earth and the inner colonies... except... Reach must've had loads of semi-secure data. Could they have deleted/locked it all? Surely they didn't expect their mighty stronghold to actually get smashed like that. Hmmm. Mebbe more Covenant didn't show up because they were busy mopping up the Inner Colonies.

Um. Maybe they're being mightily manipulated by their "gods". The Forerunners? 343 Guilty Spark? It would have been nice to have some li'l bits of background data around, though... "So THAT'S how Hunters--ewwwwwwww!"

I'm not sure if 343 Guilty Spark specified the other thingies were all Halo-like objects. In any case, he's the most likely antagonist. Cortana may have (probably did) manage to get data from her contact with Halo's systems that would win the war for the humans. Of course, Cortana may have been... affected by said contact...

I dunno if this's what was meant, but sometimes when you blow the HELL out of something (like, say, a grunt) they get majorly mashed into the wall. Looks like they're just hanging, hugging the wall.

The only way I ever flew a banshee is when I found one still on the ground w/o anyone in it. This was in the later levels. What I really want to know is if you can ever use it in multiplayer

Someone suggested that a good way to use them in multiplayer is to play one of the solo levels (that has them) in coop mode.

As far as I can tell, when you're flying the Banshee it has the whole vehicle damage thingamajigger. When THEY'RE flying it, it uses their health. You know that first time you get a chance to fly one, on that ice/rock bridge over the control center base? The first time I tried to snag it, I shot up the red Elite that tries to hop in it until his shields were down, then he started it up. I nailed him again, and the Banshee went boom. D'oh. \=^,

And as far as I know, no Banshee in multiplayer. Besides, the biggest levels, Sidewinder and Blood Gulch, would be kind of cramped with them if you ask me.

Don't read this if you haven't finished HALO!

WARNING!!!!!!! DONT READ THIS IF U HAVENT FINISHED HALO OR IT WILL COMPLETELY RUIN THE ENDING FOR U.

I would just like to make a few comments on the ending of the game. This is mainly the last few levels. While the introduction of The Flood was an interesting idea, after the first level u saw them, I thought they were just plain annoying. Although it is a wonderful game, best I've ever played, I think it would have been better without The Flood and The Sentinels.

And a comment on the very last level. As the banshee flew towards the crashed pillar of Autumn, I felt a horrible twinge of sadness. A ship that kick-ass deserved a better death than that. At least mothball it :).It made it even worse when the PoA blew sky high. And what made me even sadder was the very end when the Halo is destroyed. It has to be the coolest structure ever created. When it blewq up, I could do nothing but frown and look at my feet. :(

Although I thought it was a nice touch how at the u see the Master Chief reach up to remove his helmet, and you hear the hiss as he removes it, but the ceiling of the ship they escpaed in is blocking the view of his head. Nice.

That's it for my rantings abot the end of Halo. Got to get some sleep so I can get up early tomorrow and start Halo on Heroic. :)

P.S. I was playing my friend CTF ( i only have 2 controllers) on Blood Gulch. He drove up to my base, and I was on top of it with a rocket launcher. I shot the jeep and it flew into the air and landed on top of my base. I moved it into position and I then had a stationary gun turret on top of my base. Sweeeeeet. :)

The ending of Halo saddened me. How no other human survived at all. I think I was pretty depressed a few days after finishing the game. The extra footage when you finish the game on legendary made it sadder. :(

Walking through the crashed PoA was also sad... :(

Sigh...

My new favorite Halo moments

I'm fighting that really obnoxious gold elite
on the far side of the light suspension bridge.
He's dodging like a mofo on crack. I throw a
grenade in hopes of getting him to jump into
my firelane. Instead, he jumps the other way...

Clear off the bridge and into the valley below.
I popped a couple of slugs in him with the pistol
for good measure though.

Second favorite, I lob a grenade just over a jackal's
shield. It sticks to his hand and for the last three
seconds of his life he runs around waving his glowing
hand above his head.

And I coulda sworn I heard a grunt squeal "fuck you"
just before he died. But I could be wrong on that last
one.

Forerunners Golden Elite's?

I have a theory that the Golden Elite may be the Forerunner of Halo or the people who created the Flood. Here are my reasons::

1.The Golden Elites Can jump far just as far as the Flood can.
2.The Plasma sword or whatever it's called Kills the Flood in 1 hit and if you remember GS wonders why you have brought such inifective weopons to fight the flood. Mabey he is used to the golden Elities killing them in 1 shot.
3. Notice the Symbol on thier back after you kill them It looks almost Exacly the same as the symbol and all of the buildings on Halo.
4. Notice that there is a Golden Elite Standing behind the door in the Level The silent Cartographer. It seems like he is Guarding the Map Room.
5. In the Level Assult on the control room if you play on a harder level there is a Golden Elite standing behind the door you open at the last part where all the men com at you.
6. Notice how after the Flood are Releases the Golden Elites Seem To Dissapear from the last Levels like they ran from Halo knowing the Flood has been Released.
You don't have to Believe me it's only an Opinion but I just think that it's the Golden Elites.

Things you should NOT be able to do with a Warthog!

I watched my brother and his friend play through the "Cartographer" Island level on Ledgendary. I was laughing the whole time not because of their skills but because of what they were doing with the Warthog.

Thier goal was to see how far they could get the vehicle in.... and they got it very very far!

So first thing... they drive the warthog into the first building with the locked door... not so hard. They left it there.

Next they need to go to the hologram thing to unlock the door. The path there is blocked by a tree.. with some work they get the warthog in... but the baddies blow them up and the downhill causes it to slide out. They get it in again with some work and this time drive over the baddies. They proceed to battle the Hunters and drive over them. They get up the cliff to the entrance of the building only to have the baddies blow the warthog off the cliff and back to the start on the beach.... but they are persistent... get it past the tree and finally into the building.
Down inside the building the warthog is blocked with boxes. I thought they would have to give up. But no.... they fill the warthog up with grenades and blast it overtop the box.
They now are able to drive the warthog all the way to the hologram... and the locked door in the other area is now open.

A new warthog is delivered in the crashed carrier. They drive this warthog to the first warthog at the now unlocked door. Now I am looking at this door and I figure... game over... the door is smaller than the warthog itself. But I was so wrong. One drived the warthog at full speed into the door. The front is now partially jammed in... but stuck. They take the second warthog and ram in the first!
Not content with having one warthog in an impossible door they proceed to jam the second one through... and get it in with grenades.

Now there is 2 warthogs in the corridors and a check point reached. The area with the endless pit was amusing because they would drive the warthogs off the ledge and try to get them stuck on outcroppings down below.

They proceed to drive the wathogs into the interior of the building running over all sorts of grunts... they drive up ramps and so on... until a new challenge...... a small door like before.... but that will only open when you stand at the door.... the door will not open if you are in the warthog. To deal with the challenge one stands in the doorway while the other at full speed runs him over and jams it in the doorway. The door closes on the warthog. With one player standing at the doorway again one rear-ends the jammed warthog with the second warthog. Success! They did not try to get the second one any furthur. The first warthog falls down to the lowest level of the building...

Having reached the lowest level... the next challenge was to get them back up and out. But at this point they retired... the rest is left as an excersise for the reader.

How does one fill a warthog with grenades? Can you drop a grenade in co-op play?

Well I suppose it was not literally filled with grenades. But the plasma grenades have a long fuse, and with 2 players you can throw several grenades under it before the first explodes. You can launch the warthog fairly far... good thing it is indestructable.

New amusing Halo moments include some harmless bugs, being pushed through the floor... sometimes only part way. Or getting a weapon that never runs out of shots.

Cortana: Evil Manipulating Bitch?

So Jessikai brought up some interesting points about Cortana. It seems most of us have forgotten the Cortana letters..or are just not discussing them?

The fourth letter is particularly interesting.
I'll just point out a few things to get discussion going

The first transmission is coming from another AI on the ship. Possibly the real one?
The next part of the message is from Cortana. Apparently the other non-rampant AI is responsible for putting her in Master Chief's head/suit.

So I've decided Cortana is either a) A bloody good actor, b) has a split personality, or c) is not the same character Bungie created at the time of these letters (circa June 1999)

Another interesting thing Jessikai noticed..one of the levels in the game is called "WARNING: Hitchhikers May be Interstellar Criminals!". I had totally forgotten this but it does seem to make sense when the Cortana letters are taken into account. Cortana could be seen as a hitchhiker on the PoA and even in Master Chief's body.

I'd like to see what people that have read The Fall of Reach think about all this.

Re: Cortana: Evil Manipulating Bitch?

It seems that the Interstellar Criminal thing is more likely a reference to 343 Guilty Spark. He's the one who left Halo (the prison) to catch a ride with you and Cortana.

Cortana seems to have gotten a bit less complex right along with the rest of the plot. I'd be hard pressed to fit some of the Cortana Letters into the game once it became less Marathon and more Aliens. However if you go by the assumption that they are written after her arrival on Halo most of her comments can be shoehorned into the storyline. The other A.I. on (?) the PoA could be 343 GS using the PoAs communications to broadcast off of Halo, and the monotonous threats seem to be from the Covenant network.

On the emotional side Cortana seems to have softened up a bit and perhaps she is even in love with Captain Keyes - anybody agree? How many times do we need to rescue that schmuck with Cortana worrying loudly the whole time something's happened to him. Although after her interfacing with Halo she seems a bit more detached, good thing for her as Keyes is on his way to blobification...

"Warning: Hitchhikers may be escaped convicts" is the actual level name, no? I was told that's just some funny thing someone at Bungie saw on a roadsign.
Yeah let's not look too deeply into these things..there's nothing to find except what we invent in our minds.

Well the name Two betrayls always caught me as interesting, I wonder if Cortana was so much interested in the captain as in his control glands.

Well, if you read The Fall of Reach, Cortana seems to be quite fond of the Master Chief.

Åstro's Halo Story Bits

Hiay all,
After playing Halo through several times, I have some interesting bits of stuff to talk about regarding the Halo story.

  • First of all, the Halos were built by the Jjaro... I always believe that, and I still do; it just seemed right. In game, it always refers to the builders of the Halos as The Forerunners. What proof do we have that the Halos are Jjaro-built?
  • Second of all, something that I bet most people missed... This isn't the only Halo. There were a total of 8. After the end of Halo, 7 remain. How do I know this? 343 Guilty Spark says that this particular installation's (this Halo's) pulse has a range of 25,000 lightyears, but that the whole galaxy will be wiped out when the others follow suit. How many Halos would it take to completely remove all life from the galaxy? 8. It would take 8 spheres of radius 25000 ly to completely cover our galaxy.
  • UNSC=UESC=UESG. They're all the same thing, or different forms of the same thing. They all have the same logo even.
  • I havn't read Fall of Reach yet, but I've heard that it tells alot more about the history of Cortana. I won't go into my reasoning right now, cause I find it kinda obvious, but... Cortana is Durandal's sister. She is also another AI from the fall of Traxus. She is Traxus reborn, just as Durandal was. Except she wasn't kept in the first stages of rampancy like Durandal was... She has already progressed through all of rampancy, and is now to the god level, at least as much as possible with her limited access to knowledge. Notice how her actions when she got into the Halo core computer were almost exactly identical to Durandal's when he first got on the Pfhor Scoutship in Marathon. Oh, and she's not the PoA's AI. And she also may be an interstellar criminal. Why? I bet most people were too preoccupied with escaping the PoA in the last level to fully comprehend what the title of the last area in The Maw was refering to... "WARNING: Hitchhikers May be Interstellar Criminals"... I'm preety sure this is refering to Cortana, as she hitchhikes on the PoA, and then you.
  • And other stuff that I can't remember but will post about later prolly.

    Perhaps a parallel universe...

343 Guilty Spark. What's with that name? Are there 342 other Forerunner AIs that came before him?

I still think that they are the same government, just that it was overthrown and got its name changed or something. And I've always taken it as fact that Marathon and Halo are in the same universe. That's a given, for me. Of course, I'm crazy enough to think ALL story-driven Bungie games are in the same universe. (ie, everything except Gnop and O:DS, even Myth)

: 343 Guilty Spark. What's with that name? Are there 342

No, not at all. He's the AI charged with guarding that particular Flood prison that was set loose. There are dozens of similar prisons for Flood. And don't forget that there are 8 other Halos as well, so that means that there are at least 43 on this particular Halo. I'd venture to guess that there are prolly 49 or so on each Halo, though that's a totally blind guess (I picked that cause it's more than 43, and it's the closest major 7ish number, 7*7) :). That'd mean there are AIs numbered up to 392. Just a nice even figure.

343 is 7^3. I doubt there's more to it than that, but I suppose you could argue that there are 49 Flood prisons including the Halos, each with 7 AIs. Or something.

Doubtful. Cortana was created from a cloned copy of a human brain, inscribed with the same thought patterns as the particular human whose brain was cloned. As for who this human was, I'd rather not spoil it too much for those who might want to pick up the book. But this makes her very interested in the Master Chief's safety.

: Oh,and she's not the PoA's AI.

Technically, the PoA had another AI who was supposed to run the show while Cortana left with Master Chief on their real mission. She was supposed to be the electronic infiltration specialist. The mission was somewhat cancelled when Reach was attacked and the PoA had to flee... which eventually led them to Halo.

No more threat with GS and other Halos

People are suggesting that the sequel of Halo (if there will be one, pretty please Bungie!) will involve around Guilty Spark and him continuing his mission. His mission according to some is to wipe out all sentient life, which would starve the Flood. But remember, this would be the mission of the Forerunners as well IF the Flood were getting out of control, which did happen in the course of Halo with the Covenant and humanity letting them loose. My point is since that Halo is now in pieces, why would Guilty Spark go to the other Halos and try and destroy humanity, since in a sense you did what he was trying to do, wipe out the Flood on that Halo (just in another way). He will most likely head to one of the other Halos as a watcher of the Flood.

I think maybe the real threat now is with the Forerunners, you just took out one of their precious Halo rings, now they may be seeking for you (and humanity). I am just curious what Master Chief was thinking of when he said the battle has just begun at the end of the game. Is he talking about the Covenant race or the rest of the Flood on other Halos (which like I said, should not be a problem if no one else visits a Halo). Maybe the Covenant are stupid enough to look for one of those other Halos and try again to use it as a weapon against the humans. I highly doubt that. What I most wonder is the Covenant really did wipe out all humans and Spartan units on the planet Reach...

Re: No more threat with GS and other Halos

Hiay all. I have been gifted with a major mindblow... The complete story of all of Marathon/Halo/etc. I may be willing to answer specific questions, but I'm not even gunna TRY to explain the whole thing. *Way* too complex. So anyway, no, the Cov will not ever be visiting another Halo, except perhaps to *guard* it. And 343GS would not goto another Halo, cause that's pointless. It could only wipe out ITS 1/8 of the galaxy, while the Flood from his Halo are in the other 1/8 of the galaxy. And no, humanity has absolutly *nothing* to fear from the Forerunners, except perhaps help against the Covenant.

Re: No more threat with GS and other Halos

Hey Astro,

Remember the Covenant had a wrong understanding of Halo and I don't think they ever did figure it out (speaking of which, all Covenant that were on Halo have been wiped out). They orginally thought that Halo could be used as a weapon, in which they could wipe out humanity. That is why they vigoursely got onto Halo before you when they found out where you were heading too. They wanted to find the secrets of Halo. They did not know about the Flood, but you never know... What I am saying is, if they find another Halo, I will bet they will look for the secrets that they believe in once again. One wonders though why they never looked for Halo through the course of the war, or maybe they did but never found one. Maybe, just maybe, tons of other Covenant found one of the other Halos which you will be visiting next game, you never know.

Why would 343 GS not go to another Halo? Remember, he can get a hold of the Index of Halo only with help from a badass like yourself. Unless he is only stationed on one Halo, which is very unlikely.

We do know that the Covenant know about the Forerunners and worship them, maybe because they use (steal) technology that has been created by the Forerunners. I think the Forerunners will be pissed at what you did with this Halo. They never intented it to be destroyed like this. I would bet they will go after you and humanity, maybe teaming up with the Covenant like you suggest. I wish we knew a little more about the Forerunners, maybe in the next Halo book? :)

Good point. I forgot all the ones that found this Halo got blown up. So unless they sent off a message to their homeworld or something, which is possible, another group of Cov would make the same mistake that these did, trying to find its secrets.

Why wouldn't he? If he is floating around in space, my bet is he'll be heading off to guard the Flood on another Halo.

Sounds like you the story about them perhaps? :) Anyway, if the Forerunners are the Jjaro, than they are probably the strongest race/AI ever to live. I mean look at the Mark IV marine in Marathon, he had Jjaro implants inside him. He could download a copy of himself into a computer so he would never die, pretty impressive to me! Just ask the Pfhor (bah!) about how good he was. :)

Side note to the plot...

I pretty much have to agree with Astro on what he was hinting at in his last reply. The storyline in Halo is very good and it does indeed merge with Marathon's. The problem is that just as with the Myth's storyline names, places and events change over time.

One important thing to note is when Astro mentioned the confusion over the UNSC=UESC=UESG dilema. Just as with any organization they can change titles at any time. So it is not a matter of who, but when that needs to be resolved.

As for how this relates to the specifics in Halo, just think of it as a four-dimensional plane. So they not only have location within the universe but also their place in time to contend with as well. So just because Halo was released after Marathon does not mean that any or all of its story must be after as well.

Sincerely,
Pimpy™

Before you said they were in the previous thread I thought.

Not quite yet? The Jjaro were around WAY before the 26th Century. Maybe we are in an alternate universe?

Also why the heck would the Forerunners need the Flood to survive? This part doesn't make much sense.

Re: No more threat with GS and other Halos

I haven't played the game yet, being in the UK :( so I'm trying to patch the (ever growing!) story together from posts. But... Why was the Flood housed on the Halo? I mean it's not like the Halo's are prisons, it's a weapon right? And... if some race could buid the Halo why couldn't they get rid of the Flood on their Halo? Aren't they supossidly more advanced than us? Or is it that the Halo's stay contant with time in the Universe and we have gone back before the Forerunners 'built it' or maybe the Forerunners are in a different universe and haven't heard about it in this universe or time line yet. ...Maybe I'm just missing an important factor in all this, I've only been "spoiler active" for a couple of days!
...Anyone help?

Your Halo story

As a Brit I have no way of getting the XBox and Halo yet, however I have no problem with knowing the entire storyline (indeed I have spoiled it totally for myself, what a shame).

What would be really cool though is if you (people who have or have played Halo) would post your Halo expereinces. Cool things you've done, funny things you've made the AI do, weird things you've done with the Warthog, etc etc etc.

That would make my (very long, until PC/Mac Halo is out) wait a lot more enjoyable.

Anyone?

Spoiler, but what the hay!!

Dude, one time, my brother and I were both in Warthogs, and we were running into each other as to do flips from the impact, and I got out at the last second. I threw a plasma onto the underside of my brother's car. Both cars flew into the air from the impact, and my brothers was right over mine when the plasma blew up. =) ! The explosion made him go flying higher into the air than I have even seen a Banshee go! Man, talk about high! So meanwhile, my brother is beating on me when I realize that my car is hurtling down at me faster than normal!! I barely dodge it as it plummets into the ground and bounces back up, and I start doing a victory dance, when my brother's car falls on me. it was hilarious. You should've been there. O well!
