In reply to: Did anyone call around (M3 retail)

I called a Babbages here in New Orleans, the drone I spoke to said "the 30th."

Anonymous's picture

It arrived at 9:47 a.m. EST today!

Time to get set it up... I ordered from EBWorld.com, but I didn't get the extra maps or the board game promised, at least in this package...

In reply to: What TFL and M2 netmaps are included? [nt] [NT]

Picked my pre-ordered copy or Myth III up at the local EB. No board game or extra net maps. They gave me one of my pre ordered xbox games too. What is up with that? Now I have a game for a system you can't buy yet.

In reply to: What TFL and M2 netmaps are included? [nt] [NT]

Here are the maps:

Tour de Forts (4 team light, 4 team dark, 2 team light, 2 team dark)
Season of Slaughter (5 starts, looks a little bit like Grave)
Over Myrgard (6 starts)
Ramparts (same options as Tour de Forts)
For Carnage Apply within (light, dark)
Creep on the Borderlands (light, dark)

I installed this on a laptop here at work just so I could take a peek at the netmaps to answer your question. Not actually playable.. (366, no graphics card, touchpad, etc.)

In reply to: Re: What TFL and M2 netmaps are included?

Thanks for answering. Looks like they didn't have much room left on the CD after the solo stuff was on there. Ah well, all the more reason for everyone to keep an eye out for new 3rd party maps in the next few months ;-)

In reply to: Received my Myth III preorder!

So far a very dissapointing multi-player game.
The text is very hard to read, most games are not implemented(Ie assassin, hunting, scavenger hunt), unit speeds feel to slow and a only 6 different maps with may variations are included.

The graphics and lighting are very impressive as are the units themselves, it just needs some tweeking still.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Have the game and am very dissapointed....

: unit speeds feel to slow

this is the exact same feeling I had when I first played, and when I asked about it here was the answer:

In M2, regardless of how fast the unit is actually moving, his sprites keep whirring away at a blinding pace. In Myth 3, each foot has to be placed before the next one comes off the ground, creating a very deliberate feel to each step and turn. Nevertheless, they units are moving at exactly the same or slightly tweaked speeds when compared to M2.

Another funny thing is how fast units move... proportionately to the units, Myth maps are very small. To counter this, units move very slowly. Think of ghols, that you visualize as speedsters near-flying across the ground... the MJ team converted their speed from M2's world units to the real world's miles per hour, and that ghol is really only moving at about 8 mph. That's an easy jog for most reasonably fit people. Dwarves are cranking along at some 2mph. M2's units, with their never-slowing-always-fast-sprites, give the appearance of moving quickly without actually moving that quickly.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: "unit speeds feel to slow" - here's why

On HL a MJ guy who saw my first post tonight said that unit speeds have actually been tweaked quite a bit to compensate for the slow-down effect, so much that a M3 zerk runs at roughly the same speed as a M2 Trow.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: hm, actually

That may seem like a lot to the uninformed - trow are pretty damn fast - but a zerk is 0.045 and a trow is 0.051 in fear, a warrior being 0.031 and a ghol being about 0.043.

Are the animations tweaked as well?

I am getting used to the units. Can something be done about camera control as far as when I make presets and cycle back and fouth between selections. The camera does not auto focus on the units unless one selects f11. With f11 enabled the camera fights you when you try to change it automatically and makes for sluggish camera movement. The auto focus should be automatic without hitting f11.

Fixing the text (in chat and in game) and implementing more netmaps and I think they have a winner :)

GameSpy:
not bad design. although, Fonts though are horrible. It's not readable at 640x480 (meaning that i have to run at 800x600). It's also dark. Open games are red, closed gray. It also shows join/leave and sounds for hitting enter (kind annoying). You also cant dbleclick to join a game, you have to hit enter.

Ingame:
Fonts still bad. there is no postgame restart, nice. Theres a bug with saving which allows you to keep saving films if you go back and forth to postgame.

Games:
All i played are creep, carnage and Tour de Forts. Kinda slow (PIII 650, Voodoo 3). FPS counter useless. Going to OC to 806 to see what that does to fps. LOD works. Fonts also horrible. Tro iron warriors are leet. Water is messed up on Voodoo 3. Warrs dont block (so thrall own them). 'Blue' units arent blue. There is no HEY just hey. The life counter doesnt go down, but it does change color.

I think that's it... off to 806!

I've had no problem running the game and I am very impressed with it. The Graphic Quality is superb and the menu sytems is nice. The gameplay feels just like old Myth style with a few tweaks. Many units are a little different than before, but I feel for the best.

The only problem I had was running the movies, they black out and I only get sound, however on a little card in the box it said this was a known problem. Yay, now for bed...

Oh yeah, I'm running on:
Althon T-Bird, 1.3 GHZ, 256 Megs of Ram, ELSA GeForce2 Ultra, X-Gamer SB Live!, IBM HD, blah, blah, blah, runs great!

well, as one of those bored mac users, i was doing some looking and came up with a little link on the godgames site:

scroll down to the download link for multiplayer. good luck.

I should be getting the full game very soon, but this will help tide me over :D

At least, when it stops being slashdotted... or i find an alternate download link.

The demo is also currently available at 3d gamers. How long before they go under?

I managed to snag it from there, only another hour to go at 14kbps...

It would be nice to know so that we can host. I called godgames on the phone today, they do not have multiplayer support. So any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well, related to your post to some degree:

I've just been told that Myth III doesn't support TCP/IP gaming in a more standardized, accessible fashion... it does support GameSpy. (Hrm, I'll have to go check whether PlanetFoo is supporting Macs and Linux boxes these days)

And if someone desires to duplicate (clone) GameSpy's function in some fashion, they'll likely get the crap kicked out of them by a horde of lawyers.

I'm wondering what alternatives there are for Mythers.

GAMESPY ARCADE is a metaserver system, the "client" is directly built into the game. (Same thing as UT). Now... YES that is Mac compatible.

Now, hosting games without using the gamespy network... now that is another issue.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Re: ... On the topic of TCP/IP...

... because a great many individuals I know don't particularly like GameSpy. I've had my own difficulties with them, myself. Directly, even, when webbing for a group.

I'm just not easily seeing why a simple TCP/IP option isn't included. Perhaps they decided they didn't have the time or personnel resources for developing such. Although there was a TCP/IP option in the code before they began to modify it.

And it's not that I'm screaming bloody murder, particularly, and refuse to play Myth III. I'm just wondering why it may be so heavily dependent upon GameSpy, and ignore other options. Shoot... I'm probably not going to bother much with thinking about unit balance and such - like most of you on the hotline servers are - until I get to play it. That's something which will have to be experienced... Multiplay capabilities, however, are something that most of us have experienced to an appreciable degree and can hold a more valid opinion on, game-unseen.

In reply to: What port number does myth 3 use?

I'm trying to run some netstats while hosting/playing...

So far it looks like 6667 and 29900-30000 are being used in some way to communicate with Gamespy, however, I am able to be a client on Gamespy with just NAT, at least in chat, and play games without any problems.

I haven't been able to get any kind of "LISTEN" numbers while hosting.. i don't think people can see or get into my games.

If anyone can help figure this out, It'd be much appreciated.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Trying to figure that out.

3453 (the old myth port) seems to be being used while people are hosting games.

6667 is being used for chat w/ gamespy.

18800 - 18900 may be being used.

28900 - 29999 may be being used.

I've set up all these but I can't get games to show up in the gamespy interface... any ideas?

alright, spec time.
233 G3 with a voodooII and 96 megs of ram.

before I go out and buy Myth III I thought I wait to see how it played on peoples computers. while there are system requirements I could look at (though I am unable to find any atm...) they don't always give an indications as to what is PLAYABLE.

maybe this is a mute question at this point, because there is no Mac version out yet. I don't really care if you 300mhz PIII can't run it, because I think I own a P5 2ghz monster :-)

also, does anyone know if the Mac demo (when it comes out) will be any indication of how the full version plays? in most cases the demo is, but I thought I'd ask.

Thanks for the help.

Im wondering if you do have a voodoo card ( I have a V5), you should probably stay in Mac OS 9 correct? Last I hear I think it's incompatible with Mac OS 10.1?

There aren't any Voodoo drivers for OS X, so yeah, you will need to be in OS 9 when you play Myth III. However, Myth III runs best under OS X.

Well, you could up the VRAM to 6Mb for your onboard Rage II+ chip for around $10, but you ain't going to run Myth III with that.

If I were you, without much scratch, here's what I would do:

Buy more RAM (check Otherworld Computing). It's hella-cheap.
Overclock that CPU to 300 Mhz (see XLR8yourmac for a how-to).
Score a used Voodoo II (or higher) card. DL the appropriate drivers.

--

At the time, a Rage II+ wasn't a bad video chip. Your G3/266 was running circles around PII/466s, partially because of that chip (one PC magazine disabled the ATI chip to get a Pentium to outperform the G3 in some of its tests, prompting howls from some Evangelistas).

Thankfully, though, there are Mac drivers for old PC Voodoo cards...so grab a cheap one. Heck, I gave my Voodoo II card to a friend.
