There's an interview with Doug Zartman, Bungie Studios' public relations guy, about the implications of the MS buyout on Halo's development on Blue's News today. An item worth noting:
In addition to The Mill and I Have Filmz, The Marathon Story Page has also changed, seemingly as a result of the Microsoft buyout of Bungie.
And while the source code to Aleph One may be safe under the GNU Public License, there is no telling what Microsoft may think of the uses to which the Marathon intellectual property has been put at the Story Page.
In case anyone had been wondering, the recent buyout of Bungie by Microsoft leaves MS owning the rights to the Marathon franchise, while Take Two gets the rights to Oni and Myth.
How does this affect the opening of the Marathon source code? Hopefully, not at all.
Derek Moeller, who maintains the FAQ for the Aleph One project had this to say:
Kudos to Jonny Rotten, who pointed out a new Halo screenshot at Blue's News, which makes for a nice distraction from the doom and gloom around here. While the depicted marine and sniper rifle are very impressive, they take a back seat before half of the image is even loaded: trees. Gorgeous, good looking trees at that.
And life goes on.
A new build of Aleph One at Marathon Open Source today, bringing the open source version of Marathon to v0.10.9 and fixing some bugs from v0.10.8. Perhaps more importantly, the Aleph One project now has a Hotline server to support it:
The online cartoon site Penny Arcade has posted up a new cartoon to comment on recent events. You can thank Tsao for pointing this out to R.net, and go take a look!
Acrappa has let us know that the I Have Filmz site is not shutting down, and will resume normal operations tomorrow.
In the source of the html at the Mill, Frigidman admits that the item about the Mill shutdown being ordered by MS is, in fact, a joke. Since Myth is in fact now owned by Take Two, this would make little sense anyway.
From the source code:
Well, it looks like another site may be shutting down in protest of Microsoft's purchase of Bungie. Ye Olde Filmz now has put up a simple page that shows a Microsoft logo along with the headline, Game over man, game over.
The rest reads only:
The apocalypse is here. Good bye.
No confirmation yet on whether this is just a temporary page or in fact a notice that Ye Olde Filmz has in fact shut down.
Our own esteemed Frigidman has shut down his popular Myth map and plugin site, the Mill, as a result of Bungie's purchase by Microsoft. From the site:
