(^ I'll be using this pic in my discussion ^)

couple questions for us to ponder, or maybe someone will have an answer?

for starters, the weapon fire, is it coming from whatever is being dropped from the drop ships? or is it coming from the drop ship itself?

And can anyone tell what is being dropped? what ever it is, it's big.

also, the drop ships seems to have a large energy field between the (for lack of a better word) forks of the ship. now unless that drop ships is *huge*, that seems like a giant waste of space. 2/3 the ship area is being take up by this energy field that, I would assume at least, is for flying.....I guess it could be a weapon....oh dear I hope not ;-)

yes I know this is pointless as the game is coming out in under a week. but humor me ;-)

I took another look, this time in a dark room with everything but the pic blacked out ;-)

it would seem more like 1/3 of the ships area is the energy field, and that's not counting multiple levels(if there are any).

also the thing that I thought was being dropped seems to be attached to the covie ship and hanging down.

dangit, I've got better things to do then go back and watch all the movies, and look at the pics, to figure this out. but that's never stopped me before ;-)

I'd say they're an energy pulse weapon, or mb... some sort of energy casings for troop landings you can see some figures behind one of the 'orbs' and it seems to link with the tracker reading at 15m ...No, more likely to be covering fire me thinks ..notice the dead bodies nearby;-/
Dunno what type of ship though

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Re: Some Corrections

I agree. I think the enemy fire is coming directly from the ship itself, and that the thing below the ship is actually part of it's own structure, and not something being released from it.

That structure below the ship would be the only logical place it seems to put a gun turret to supress enemy infantry, so that's most likely what it's doing (hence the energy blasts just a few inches from our green-armored friend).

It's very hard to tell what they energy field is for. It doesn't appear to be a shielding system because it's definitely not covering the whole ship. Perhaps it is part of a weapons system, maybe it aids in flight somehow, or even assists in the carrying of vehicles/equipment. It looks like the energy field is about the width of the forks of the ship themselves... almost like some sort of stasis field. I probably totally missed the mark at what it's for, but maybe we'll only find out once we play Halo... not on the x-box for me though =(

From my, slightly enhanced version it appears to be from the ship itself. Probably suppression fire.

The inlay shows it from a different angle. I'm thinking the fire is coming from the little winged section just above the charger's middle there.

I think its a suspensor field -- for flying/maneuvering, or it could be a way to pinpoint small slipspace jumps of troops. We've seen in the book how accurate and fast the covy are with slipspace technology... *shrug* Maybe I'm giving the covies too much credit. :P

Ok, cool - maybe I wasn't so far off after all with my thoughts =) That second view of the ship helps a lot, so at least we know a little more about it then before.

The fire is coming from a gun turret on the ship itself and the energy field is for carrying any vehicles the Covies want to bring along. The two 'bars' on either side of the energy field hold the attacking forces.

The covenant vehicles (hovercraft and tank) are suspended in the energy field and then released from the field after the ship lands.

: and what do you mean the "bars" on the ship hold the

Try to look at the ship as a giant tuning fork with the energy field between the fork. The two parallel sections of the fork carry troops inside of them.

If it's still unclear I'd be happy to make a picture. :-)

In their review they stated that there ae only 2 races present. um. In the Halo booklet which I have seen scans of, it has describes the members of humans and aliens. Under aliens, it describes the grunts, Jackals, Elites and Hunters (Giant guys). Last time I checked 1+1+1+1=4, not 2. Hmmmmm Plus there is another race I have seen in screenshots that resemble jackals, but are not quite them, i don't know if they are still in the game tho. I'm not quite sure how the people of PlanetXbox came up with 2 races.. hmmmm

The quote is kind of misleading, what they effectively meant is that Halo breaks down into 2 classes of enemies, the little guys who are annoying, and the big guys who give you lots of trouble. Their real issue with it centered on level design being repetitive in some places.

But there are more classes. I would probably classify grunts on their own, or maybe with Jackals. Probably separately, cos grunts suck :). But Jackals are nothing compared to Elites, so there is two separate classes. And lastly, the giant Hunters, who kick my ass all over the carpet, then step on me :). So the way I see it, there are 4 classes, and maybe more if there are any aliens we don't know about.

The review basically stated elsewhere that although there were more than two races, they were not visually distinct, and players would most likely just divide them into "short" and "tall"-- hence the "2". Then, in addition, they mention the unpictured, yet possibly familiar, foes.

Which is also a crack induced comment... the difference between a Jackal and a Grunt is enormous, while the difference between the Elite and Hunter is even more so.

Even the different weapons used by the Covenant make them distinct from one another. A sword Elite behaves much differently, and must be fought in a different fashion than one carrying a plasma rifle, or one carrying a needler.

And take into account that they can use vehicles, grenades, etc? I get the impression that the reviewer was hard pressed to find something to complain about to justify the -10% XBox penalty, and the relative size a single sect of enemies was the most convenient gripe.

Actually, most of the griping was about "repetetive indoor gameplay".

But in any case, there's still some math problems here.

The Covenant was, IIRC, a group of three alien races.

Now you've mentioned Jackals, Grunts, Elites and Hunters.

That's four. So either those don't actually represent races because two or more of them are actually the same in which case the review *might* be right, unless there are other units that represent a third Covenant race.

Who says there are definitely three Covenant races? There are four, and several distinct variations of each, possibly excluding Hunters. IS there more than one knid of Hunter? Hmm...

And the addition of the mysterious "third team" really beats the whole too-little-variety argument into the ground.

Umm, because I have a life and a job in addition to running R.net?

I'll get to it. "New in last 6 hours" was the only solution I could implement in the week I switched from the old system to the new one, which was forced on me a month early by a hard drive failure.

Then I had to get back to my regular job, my regular life, etc etc. And with Halo and M3 launching, most of my r.net time is newsposting and research, not coding.

I hope I'll have more time for R.net soon, but I honestly can't say when. There is a list of site improvements to be made, and changing the way new posts are labeled is one of them.

Halo's difficulty levels are roughly analgous to Marathon's, except without Marathon's "Easy" difficulty level.

M Kindergarten = H Easy
M Easy = No Halo counterpart
M Normal = H Normal
M Major Damage = H Hard
M Total Carnage = H Impossible

The omission of the midpoint between Easy and Normal won't be missed by most, and I think most people will find Impossible comparable to Marathon's Total Carnage level.
