Oh! They have the internet on computers now! - Homer J Simpson
: As I look through the Halo 2 feature in my EGM magazine
: again I still stare at the Brute in awe. It looks so
: powerful and mighty and ,well, violent. But as I stare at
: its "utility belt" I see what EGM has speculatively labeled
: as "Ka-boomsticks", a new type of Covenant grenade. They
: are basically a long metal cylinder with a little bit of
: glass protruding out and they don't appear to have any kind
: of trigger mechanism but an open hole instead, so I don't
: think they are grenades. What I think they are is power
: cores for the Covenant weapons. I hope its what they are
: and that we could use them. I mean, I find it hard to
: believe that the Covenant would just throw a weapon away
: after its core was empty.
-------
Covenant weapons must be powered by batteries. When you are holding one, the ammo count picture is a battery and when it's out of ammo it says "battery depleted". It says in the manual they are powered by some kind of power core that we do not know how to replace or recharge, which sounds like a battery. So the Covenant must have spare batteries or charging machines, even though we've never seen any yet.
This post by David Marsh on the Halo story page at http://halo.bungie.org/ further prooves this theory by providing an explanation of how the could work from the electricity in a battery.
"It's very hard to store plasma by itself, because of the tremendous power levels it takes to create a magnetic bottle so that it doesn't come into contact with any of the gun, thereby vaporizing it. Therefore, it wouldn't be practical for the guns to work by storing plasma and releasing it when needed.
I was pondering this, and when I saw the front of a plasma gun yesterday, it all came together. There are two colored metal plates on the two prongs of both guns, blue for the rifle and green for the pistol. They reminded me very much of electrodes, and I thought that it would be much more efficient to have a battery in the gun rather than plasma. For any uninformed readers, plasma is ionized gas; that is, gas that has had many electrons knocked out of the atoms within it, at least one electron per atom. Heat is a measure of kinetic energy, or of the movement of particles, mass of particles and number of particles combined. When you rip electrons from an atom, you create at least twice the number of particles, so the temperature increases dramatically, which is why plasma is so deadly. One of the easiest ways to make plasma is to run a large current of electricity through a gas, and use the surrounding gas as ammunition. Maybe the guns run a large amount of electricity through the air and turn it to plasma, then shoot it forward via a magnet behind the electrodes. If the plasma guns that the covenant use do in fact run electricity between the electrodes, it would explain much of the gun's behaviors, such as overheating. If the gun stored plasma and released it, it would not heat up the gun, but maybe actually cool it down. However, a current of electricity between two electrodes makes the electrodes very hot. Therefore, it seems that the plasma guns actually run off of electricity, not plasma."
It has been said that Prophets will have unique attacks, anyone care to conjecture as what they'll be? I was reading somewhere recently about mind control. That'd be sweet. Damnit I WISH we had some more info from Bungie :-)
Also, looking at the concept sketch of the Brute, it shows a lot of hair. Does this mean that the Halo 2 engine will allow for hair to be rendered on to the Brutes body? Or will it just use a texture?

Well.. we don't know how many different prophets there will be in the game, but perhaps if there are enough individuals they'll release a teaser showing the attack of one individual before release. We can always hope :)
Myth and Myth 2 had individual units (Balor, Soulblighter, the Deceiver, the Baron, etc etc) that were unique in the game and had individual appearances. Marathon something a little similar-- some in-game units were referred to by name in terminals (Admiral T'Fear, Blake, Dr. Bernhard Strauss) but none of these were ever positively identified in-game, and they didn't have unique appearances. For instance, Strauss and Blake, if they even existed as unique units in game, were just BOBs like the others.

No idea... rendering hair is pretty CPU intensive. They might choose to forgo that in order to do justice to the rest of the environment... but who knows :)

Hmmmmm.... Intersting. I think you're probably right, I read in Edge that the Prophets would each have their own unique head piece.

do any of you remember the game starcraft? Well, if you do, dont the prophets remind you something of the zerg Cerebrates that controlled the other zerg minions? Perhaps the prophets act in a similar fasion, as in, there would be one, maybe two per level controlling the other covenant. Take it out, and maybe you would disrupt the thoughts of the other covenant...
Maybe this is how the Covenant we're formed in the first place. Not really a covenant made wilfully, but because the other races we're "recruited" using mind control :) I'm not sure why though, really, the elites and prophets must have a good reason for recruiting races like grunts. I mean, how difficult would it be for the elites as a race to take out the entire race of grunts? Brutes and hunters are slightly different. Except I find elites much more difficult than hunters. I guess we'll see how hard Brutes really are...

What if the brutes, because of there hair, caught on fire? Plasma is just superheated gas (you should know this if your higher than 9th grade) so they shoud BUUUUURN! Hopefully they will. And do you think the hunters, when they miss there melee attack, take chunks out of objects like pillars?

I'd like to be able to set hairy aliens on fire, that could lead to some funny moments! Does anyone know where there's a picture of a brute?
I doubt the hunters-or anyone, for that matter-will be able to destroy scenery because that'd take a Geo-mad style thing like Red Faction to do and that would take up a lot of processor power. The again, it could happen. I think Bungie would rather spend time on other thngs in the game, though.

....Na only joking, but you never know I might of stumbled upon a true new type called a Warrior Covenant.
You would tell me if I had, wouldn't you Bungie!?
But I am guessing that Elites, Jackals ,Grunts and Hunters will play a part in Halo 2.. hopefully the Hunters would of now realised that there armour has a massive design flaw.

I heard that the flood were going to be in there, although quite how I don't know because there's no way they could've survived the destruction of Halo. My best bet is that either there are other Halos (as has been speculated) and they came from them or the Master Chief had a stowaway in the longsword...
I was told they would be able to pilot vehicles, which would be pretty wierd.
According to the uk official xbox magazine 343 guilty spark is going to alert another halo. Bungie say things will go bad to worse, could the activation of another halo be the 'worse'?

It's possible. Maybe he will activate it and the Covenant will try and take it over to destroy earth with it and will accidentally release the flood again. But would they make the same mistake twice?

Remember, that was another complete Covenant Armada, besides,Cortana realized they knew of such danger. They WERE there longer than you were. They were probably while you (MC of course)were fighting for your life on Reach.
Halo was great, don't get me wrong. and just about anyone that had anything to complain about I'd go out and harshly talk it over with them, or threaten their family.
but I have one of my own complaints that I have never seen voiced or talked about. I understand the reason for it's absence, but now that Halo 2 is coming, want to bring it up :)
I want bigger out door maps. go back and watch the old Halo preview movies. it shows large outdoor landscapes that don't seem to end. now play Halo, it's not, you're either in tunnels (as large as they may be) or canyons, never wide open spaces (islands don't count).
now I know the reasons for this, raw power to render that much stuff on screen at one time. also you have to have boundaries. also load time would be an issue.
But still, given the right amount of time, and the xBox's "awesome and untapped power" I think Bungie should be able to do this.
I want to see a distant battle in my scope, a large distant battle, then hop in my jeep and burn it across miles of terrain trying to clear covies (and maybe hit a few) and come into a wide open area where my humans are trying to hold off an actuall covie assault, not a 1 tank 2 ghost POS army.
yes I'm also asking for bigger battles, which you could say were not in Halo because it was guerrilla warfare, it wouldn't be practical to fight an all out open war. but still, it'd be fun.
it'd also give you that feeling, imagine saving a few humans from a small covie force at their base, and be talking to one of the humans. then the human yells out something and points, you turn to see a fairly large covie army coming over the distant ridge, tanks, ghosts, and eliets come bounding over in force, "oh shit" runs through your brain as 4 banshees come swooping down in front of the oncoming army.
I'm sure Bungie could do it better then that (or else I should be designing games...). in Halo (assuming you weren't pinned down) you could always run away, I hated that. I want a stand to the death battle at least once :)
I also want to see a fair sized human army with RL and snipers *chuckle* :)
ok, I'm done.

I'm not saying I want the whole game to be like this, hell no. I just want to see it once or twice for one simple reason, it'd be hella fun :)
In reply to: The first Halo preview movies vs Halo. And now Halo 2....
I know what your saying and I would want some of those huge battles too, and I've read in my EGM magizine that the people at Bungie showed them this huge battle between humans and Covenant, including snipers. I, however, do not want it so that you can't escape or fall back as in the scenario you describe. I mean you wouldn't be able to survive with a few humans against a huge Covenant army. But, hopefully the online play will give us an absolutely huge battle that won't end. I would love an everlasting battle.

yeah well, that's more or less what the first halo movies showed too. I know a lot changed with halo, new platform and all. but I'm not going to take that as evidence. now if bungie were to say that there *WILL* be huge battles, then I'll take it and hold them to it, but a preview is not always how the game will end up.

yes well, I'm living in an area where the computer won't see anything better then a 56K modem tell the year 2253. and if luck holds out, I'll be down in central america next year when Halo 2 is released, I'm not going to hold out for an incredible internet connection down there either. I may have to rely more on Bungies art of solo levels more then ever :)

about wide open spaces. i dont understand how loading and things like that would be a problem. i mean take a look at GTA Vice City(great game by the way) you can look down long streets to the end and see cars passing by. halo needs to have gamplay freedome to make deicions that can change the war in REAL time like GTA(wink wink BUNGIE wink wink). but if the ps2 can render such wide open spaces then damnit the xbox should be able to do better.

I'm sure it could do better. but let's remember, the more detail(which Halo has a lot of) the surroundings are the harder it is for it to render it. if you take into account a possible battle across that wide open area you've got a lot going on. and yes, the xBox should be able to do this given a came company that has the time and willing to figure out how. a POS coding job won't make it run smooth after all...

let's not forget that when I say wide open spaces,I don't just mean little 2D pictures placed far out into space that I can look at. I mean actual distant hills that I can go to. that takes a lot of time to actually MAKE the map when it becomes that big. one more thing Bungie I'm sure had to pass up in order to ship on time. hopefully with Halo 2 they'll take there time not only with features and graphics, but with more room within the game to explore.
ambient life, we have GOT to get the ambient life back too :)
*remembers the days back when we talked about herding the life forms on halo into stampedes that could be used to kill the covies*

Get it on computer? can't you? (I thought GTA3 was boring and prefer GTA2's style, it was more thrilling, an' I hope Vice City will actually be fun) also PS2's are waste of money and those long streets with cars down the end, lol, so funny, Halo's draw distances were much better than Gta3 on PS2 was, in fact u can see that, play HALO man. Then try Gta3.
LoL thats pretty funny you think PS2's are a waste of money. If you think about it, spending your money on video games is a waste of money. I'm a big fan xbox and the ps2. (I have both) I'm neutral but I do hate the gamecube (Still hurting from the N64) I feel that the PS2 overall has the better games although it graphically, it doesn't compare to the XboX. However XboX has Halo (need not to say more?) and thats about the only game I truely enjoyed on the XboX. If graphics is the main thing only some of you people care about then your wasting your time arguing which is a better system. Graphics are only partial to a great game. Halo had the graphics, the sound, and the story which made it a winner. If its lacking one, it detracts from the other. This is just my little rant here. =)
By the way, if you've seen the Halo 2 Trailer look closely at the nukes going off on earth. It hits a certain Washington city (*WINK WINK*)if you look closely and compare it geographically. Plus it was acknowledged by one of the Bungie guys who worked on it.

I have to agree wholeheartedly there. I don't have a PS2, but I think it's safe to say that its worldwide popularity is no fluke. It has a tremendously large selection of good games, plus it is backwards compatible with the PS1, which also had a large selection of good games. If Halo hadn't been coming to the Xbox first, I'd have bought the PS2 or no console at all (most likely the latter).
However, since then I have found a few other games that hold my interest. Morrowind on the Xbox is pretty enjoyable, even if there are a few annoying bugs (freezes, clipping errors, etc). EA Hockey 2002 is pretty good. I've played LOTR on the system, which is a fairly weak game but not a bad graphical interpretation of the Tolkien universe.
Xbox Live looks neat, as do some of the newer Xbox games (UC and Mechassault). I've no doubt MS is in this for the long haul. We'll see what they do with it. But that doesn't detract one bit from the PS2; it's a great machine with great games, and I wouldn't say anything against someone who said they'd buy that machine for console games and wait for Halo on the Mac or PC.

: its "utility belt" I see what EGM has speculatively labeled

When prophets attack!

For instance, Strauss and Blake, if they even existed as unique units in game, were just BOBs like the others.

do any of you remember the game starcraft? Well, if you do, dont the prophets remind you something of the zerg Cerebrates that controlled the other zerg minions? Perhaps the prophets act in a similar fasion, as in, there would be one, maybe two per level controlling the other covenant.

The first Halo preview movies vs Halo. And now Halo 2....
Earendil
ps
I'm not saying I want the whole game to be like this, hell no. I just want to see it once or twice for one simple reason, it'd be hella fun :)

I, however, do not want it so that you can't escape or fall back as in the scenario you describe. I mean you wouldn't be able to survive with a few humans against a huge Covenant army. yeah well, that's more or less what the first halo movies showed too. I know a lot changed with halo, new platform and all. but I'm not going to take that as evidence. now if bungie were to say that there *WILL* be huge battles, then I'll take it and hold them to it, but a preview is not always how the game will end up.

Think there are enough Re:sigh?
In reply to: Re: sighWell I would like a free PS2. For Vice City. Or a pawn shop. Or GTA 3, of course.
However, I would give all of that up, and much, much more, for a single copy of Halo 2. Man, I want that game.

Re: sigh
In reply to: Re: sighLoL thats pretty funny you think PS2's are a waste of money.

Marines will play a HUGE part in Halo 2! As the game starts on earth there'll be no shortage of them. Also, after seeing a few mysterious screenshots on www.gamescreenshots.com I would say that the forerunners are on your side and will probably lend a helping hand.

The forerunners are the race that built Halo. What they are xactly, we don't know but some people think they are related to humans.

I don;t know it they're actually keeping the gun off, that may have just been a troop hog. There are still some hogs with the gun on - the troop hog is just for transporting groups of marines around.
