Aye, I had hideous problems with the controls to begin with, until I realised you could change the control scheme. ;)
I've got the same basic setup as I used to use in Goldeneye for the N64, except with the right control stick instead of the C buttons. (It's the Southpaw style the Settings menu in Halo).

Well, I suppose for a southern hemisphere resident, that makes sense :)
I played briefly with the "Legacy" control set but found it unworkable. I use the default set with stick inversion.
Mb after the current poll we'll do one on control schemes.
If you are looking to just play through Halo and try it out I would suggest renting it some where. My local neighborhood video store had a xbox you could rent for a few days and over winter break I played through the game. I thought it was good, and by renting it you can find out too with out blowing a lot of money.

Hey thanks for the hint! Unfortunately here in Italy it's impossible to find a place where they rent x-boxes = (. The best you can get (that I know of) is a PSX 1 and even there you gotta leave them a lot of $$$s so they make sure you don't break anything (or steal it). I guess I should either move to the US or wait for the PC version of the game ; )
I swore I would not give in; I promised myself I would wait for the PC version. I could wait no more. After finish college for the semester and having the long summer ahead of me, I caved in and bought an Xbox with, of course, Halo as my first game. I've played through the crash-landing missions and it is incredible! Even after playing some recently made PC games (Ghost Recon, Jedi Outcast), I find the game simply amazing!
I knew I had to come back here. I have been a longtime lurker on rampancy.net and even a slight poster back in August, but the DNS went down and I never got ahold of the temporary server. But now I have Halo and I can share in the excitement! It's great to be back!

I also couldn't wait, and I've had an Xbox since Christmas. Of course, in Kazakhstan there aren't any Xbox games for sale (not even bootlegs) so all I've got is Halo, PGR, DOA3 and NHL Hitz, so as you can imagine Halo gets a lot of play.
And while Halo on the Xbox perhaps isn't all Halo on the Mac could've been (or will be?) it's still a great game and a lot of fun.
It is a ton of fun that has so much potential and I've only used a small part of it. I've been playing on easy for the past 4 days and I'm almost at the end. I haven't had a chance to play multiplayer but I took a peak at the options and they're endless!
The recent drop in price in the Xbox got me a $100 store credit (I purchased the box ONE day before price drop) which was enough to get me another controller and 007 Agent Under Fire), but I haven't even opened AUF because of Halo.
Anyone have any word on Halo for PC/Mac? What could they possibly add other than higher graphical capabilities (hard to imagine them getting much better)?

Online multiplayer.

It is sort of depressing to see news regarding Halo and Bungie. As is reported on the news of this site, Sony's playstation 2 has clearly won over the XBox. This means that Microsoft's plans for world domination have been slowed in at least one area. And we see conflicting reports about when Halo for Mac/PC will come out. Microsoft will hold Halo, even if its done or not even started, until they have sucked as much money out of Halo and the XBox as possible. Since Microsoft programmers are too managed or too stupid to make good software, Microsoft has bought Bungie to produce a flagship game that will allow an otherwise worthless console to make them money and enter them into the console market. This we all know. However, I personally am disillusioned with Bungie. I mean originally I thought that their sell out wouldn't really affect things that much; but now its clear that much of Bungie is tightly controlled. I don't know. I guess this is the inevitable fate of a small company of intelligent people. Bought out by a large company of idiots.
: Since Microsoft programmers are too managed or too stupid to
: make good software
Sure. MS hires a max of 2 people out of our entire 400 student CS classes and they make the extra effort of just taking the stupid ones. Heh.
MS decisions regarding bugs in their software aren't stupid... from a management point of view. I got pissed at it a lot when I worked as an intern tester, but it's a fact that at one point the costs of solving bugs become higher than what you lose by not doing the release Right Now(TM). As stupid as it looks from a dev/tester POV (and I find it mighty stupid), it is perfectly logical in a market economy. Of course, I find market economics to be BS anyway... but hey, what are ya gonna do?
ok. ps2 may be winning NOW . but wait till halo 2 comes out. and i am pissed at MS. most of there games for XBOX are a JOKE!!! some r even 2D. lyk who wants that. but lyk PS1 MS is gonna get the hang of game making. as for bungie... they are never gonna change. they will stay lyk they were when marathon came out. i think now they are gonna be even better since MS bought them. think about it. making great games and NOW having ALOT more money.they are gonna make some great games snice they have better funding.
Halo has been out for some time. Still no Mac/PC version. I was talking to a manager at a video game store and according to him Bungie is hard at work on Halo 2. I have no idea whether this is true or not, however it is incredibly disappointing to see Bungie treating the people that supported them so poorly. I have been playing Bungie Games since Minotaur (on C64). I have puchased copies of Pathways into Darkness, the entire Marathon series, Abuse, Oni, The entire Myth series and have been looking at buying Myth II Worlds. I have a G4, an iMac, a P III 700, a K6-2 500, and more older machines. There is no way in hell I am going to buy a damned console (any console), with crappy controllers, when I have thousands of dollars in perfectly good hardware. I'm not sure that I just won't buy Doom III, and UT 2003 and forget that Bungie ever existed. Most people that I used to play marathon with feel this way.
If they want to leave me hanging until 2003 then I'll spend money elsewhere. I had hoped that the press release from Bungie was true when they stated "no sellout". Well apparently M$ has more money than they have respect for their fans. The true thing that galls me is that the developers have holed themselves up in Redmond and use this go-between who attempts to coddle those of us who are completely annoyed.
Futhermore the Halo FAQ in halo.bungie.net doesn't look like it has been touched in months, and they don't have the decency to address this on their own (bungie.com) website. So I wonder if they have decided to nuke the Mac/PC version. If anyone on this forum has heard anything favorable, I would appreciate hearing about it. And no, I don't want to hear from the stuffed shirt they have acting as spokesperson. What would be nice is if perhaps the developers would be nice enough to write .plan files, or are the servers at M$ too lame to handle finger?

As for the theory that those who get tired of waiting will eventually not buy a game-- I'm continually puzzled by that. Unless you're into gaming for nothing but the gee-whiz graphics, a good game is a good game whenever it comes out.
If what you want is to play Halo on your existing hardware, you'll be able to do that when PC Halo comes out. Although you might need a new video card. But you'll need that for UT or Doom 3 anyway.

Halo.bungie.net? That's an invalid host name, I'm not sure what site you mean. Bungie runs a Halo community site called Truth And Reconciliation. It was updated with new walkthrough information just last week.

Bungie has never used .plan files or run a finger server. That's their choice. Matt Soell has represented Bungie to the online community, going back before the buyout. He was with Bungie pre-buyout, he's not an MS "stuffed shirt" as you say.
I can understand users' frustration with the long delay in PC Halo's release. I am as well. However, the "well, if it takes too long I just won't buy it" line has been old for quite some time, and never made much sense anyway.

... although if you're referring to halo.bungie.ORG, then their FAQ is updated all the time, and to my knowledge contains NO false information right now.

I feel that you guys who spend "$1,000's of dollars" on PC stuff wouln'd be killed to buy the 200 dollar Xbox and a 50 buck game. I like PC's also, but I really like console's cheap prices for hardware. I was bumed out about Halo's apparent indefinte delay, butthen the Xbox price went down, I worked real hard for weeks and voila! I now have Halo and an Xbox in my roon. Try it.
-Darlan
First off, this really is NOT the place to vent your spleen. If you're angry and want to rail against something, go load the bonus level from Marathon:EVIL and rail the locals on Total Carnage.
First off, as Narcogen points out, store managers have no inside information. And with Bungie, inside information stays on the inside, which we've all noticed. I don't think a word or screen snippet about our favorite fleshy flood of fun-filled friends was mentioned prior to Halo being released.
Second, and more poignant to your spiel, is that it's a heck of a lot easier to design and code something for a console than it is for any computer OS out there. The hardware will remain 95% static for the system, and any changes will have been predesigned into the hardware -- the N64 has a RAM expansion module, and the X-Box has redesigned USB ports. Your mouse won't fit, but an IR port for a remote will let you give input for DVD playback.
Computer designs need to factor in the target baseline system, the higher-end hardware, and anything on the drawing boards, or you'll need to have a team patching a game out of the box. Changes in the operating system (cough OS X cough) can also wreck development plans. If a game engine is going to support multiple rendering devices, like Myth II supports an internal renderer, RAVE, and Glide, you need more time to get everything together (the X-Box runs a 30 KB version of Windows and DirectX, both burned so the specs never change). In a worst-case scenario, you may even need to recode the whole project with a differant language -- Visual Basic is Windows-only, and I doubt that the Carbon and Cocoa libraries will cooperate elsewhere.
If I lost you with that, it takes several times more work to develop a cross-platform game that can be updated than it will to create a console game, regardless of content.
They're working on Halo 2, and porting Halo. Simple. They have a team large enough (read: two or greater) that's split between code pounding on content creationg. You need someone to make the textures, models, levels, story, music, sounds, and PR, and the people that do one of these things cannot automatically punch code, play a keyboard, or draw a straight line without Snap To Grid. This is specialization, and it's going to be the way Bungie -- anybody -- gets stuff done.
Having completed the logical arguement, I'll go to the straight counterattack. You first were misinformed, make a random assumption attacking Bungie's actions, then try to give yourself a reputation as a Bungie fan (which is decidedly NOT an exclusive thing, go look at the Seventh Column listings). Furthermore, you attack a third party (the X-Box, consoles in general), drag others into your arguement unvoluntarily, attack third parties several more times, make more assuptions, and attack third parties a few more times.
There is zero evidence -- but plenty of pissing, whining, moaning, and straight railing -- to back up your post, to which a nobody who just graduated from high school spent several minutes tearing apart. Find something more productive, like watching TV or playing Starcrap on battle.net.

Halo for PC is still something I'm waiting for. From what I heard, the game is just plain good. I was wondering, tho, if any big changes are being developed for the PC version? And also, anyone knows if the PC hw requirements are known?

Basically, almost nothing is known about either question at the moment, although some form of online play seems a likely addition.
Ya I played bungie games since Marathon 1 and I want Halo on PC so I don't have to spend $250 bucks for essentially 1 game. So can you at least say if it's either for sure coming or for sure not coming.

Yes, it is for sure coming; Bungie reps have said so several times and quite recently.
Nope, we don't know exactly just when yet-- Bungie generally doesn't give release dates.
Xbox Halo was an exception to that rule since it pretty much needed to be out as a launch title.

I read somewhere that a Microsoft press release said Halo (original) was being released by "Gearbox" same people who brought the crappy graphics of Half-Life...
So shouldn't you be mad at Gearbox for taking so long or am I wrong?
Gearbox is doing the PC port of Halo. However, this was only started AFTER the Xbox version was done, so they have not been working on it that long, and there is lot of work to do-- especially on the network side of things. Halo 1 on the Xbox has no facilities for decent Internet play, and on the PC that's a necessity.
As for Half Life's blocky graphics... that game is MUCH older than Halo, and used the engine of a game that was even older. However it, like CounterStrike, is popular for its gameplay, not its graphics.

Well, I suppose for a southern hemisphere resident, that makes sense :)
I played briefly with the "Legacy" control set but found it unworkable. I use the default set with stick inversion.

Halo Bungie Microsoft

Sellouts????

Re: Sellouts????
In reply to: Sellouts????First off, this really is NOT the place to vent your spleen.

: Games since Minotaur (on C64). I have puchased copies of

:
: Futhermore the Halo FAQ in halo.bungie.net doesn't look

Halo for PC is still something I'm waiting for. From what I heard, the game is just plain good. I was wondering, tho, if any big changes are being developed for the PC version? And also, anyone knows if the PC hw requirements are known?

Basically, almost nothing is known about either question at the moment, although some form of online play seems a likely addition.

When do we get Halo on PC?
In reply to: Re: Sellouts????Ya I played bungie games since Marathon 1 and I want Halo on PC so I don't have to spend $250 bucks for essentially 1 game.

Halo/PC
In reply to: Re: i dunnoI don't know if i'm the only one who know's this or if i was dreaming at the time...but...
I read somewhere that a Microsoft press release said Halo (original) was being released by "Gearbox" same people who brought the crappy graphics of Half-Life...
So shouldn't you be mad at Gearbox for taking so long or am I wrong?

Re: Halo/PC
In reply to: Halo/PCWell, you're missing some of the background.

2) You start walking around the office humming and saying "aha, I am a genius" to yourself.
And the number one reason you know you play too much Halo:
Convinced that each and every one of your co-workers is in fact a mindless zombie infected with Flood spores, you bring a shotgun and a plastic toy you call a "plasma rifle" with you to work and mercilessly blow off everyone's right and left arms, daring them to "get up so you can kill them again".
