News Summary For September 16

The second-to-last Bungie Weekly Update before Halo 3's official release date is well worth the read. The highlights, though, are you should stay out of random Bungie.net player profiles from now on, since you may end up seeing screenshots taken by people who've gotten copies early. Also, Miguel Chavez, invited to play through the game last week, says the ending is "perfect". You've heard it from Bungie's #1 fan.

Of course, Halo 3's street date has been broken about two weeks early.

Rumors are flying that the missing clan features in Halo 3 may be supplied by an XBL update.

Kotaku wonders if Halo hype has gone too far, and I can't help wondering the same thing-- even if I am, for the most part, isolated from it.

I truly hope that at the end, everyone will feel the same way I felt: It was *all* worth it.

... no Halo 2-ish aftertaste, then?

Care to post something more detailed? Spoiler-free, obviously?

Replayability?

Hmm. Well, the common wisdom is that Halo felt larger, more wide open, with more choice in approaching encounters. Halo 2, while actually larger and more detailed, felt more linear, with encounters playing out more or less the same way every time because of limited approaches.

How do Halo 3's encounters fit in that spectrum?

Rampant for over se7en years.

The common meme Bungie has been spreading is that Halo 3 is the Halo they always wanted to create. And by Halo I don't mean Halo 1, just "Halo" as in the game universe. They definitely deliver this.

Keep in mind they allow FOUR PLAYER coop. Linearity HAS to be toned down considerably.

You're gonna love it.

Can't wait.

... that's just my voodoo doll working. *envy*

Seriously, though, congrats Mig and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the ending. (And didn't have it spoiled for you.)

Actually I enjoyed just about all of it, not just the ending. When I get to pore over it inch by virtual inch I'll probably come up with some annoyances, and actually some of the ways you interact with your marines are *still* the same - stuff I thought they would've improved upon - but really, in the bigger picture, no worries.

So, I assume-- no way to give orders, no way to interact save exchanging weapons (difficult at times when they keep running around aimlessly) and still prone to taking the vehicle you wanted and then running you over with it? ;-)

Rampant for over se7en years.

It doesn't bug me that I can't do more than just exchange weapons ("Sarge, hold down THIS position" would've changed the game too much - me no wanna), but yes - making it easier to hand out weapons (the crazy situation of 'I want to give him X, but he's holding A, and I also have A, means he won't take X because he can't give me A again' is a real pain in the ass) would've been nice.
