synide at cookedgamers writes that Angel Munoz of CPL is threatening to cancel the Halo PC tournament portion of their summer event if more teams do not register before February 13. Apparently fewer teams have registered for PC Halo than for all other games. As of this writing, only five teams were fully registered, with another 22 teams requiring one or more players to complete their registration. (Full disclosure: cookedgamers itself needs 3 or more players to register).
The CPL is extending their 25% discount on admission until February 13; currently to register for all five days of the summer event is $60. The full title of the event is the Cyberathlete Extreme World Championships 2004, which takes place between July 28 and August 1 in Grapevine, Texas.

Most Halo community sites did
Most Halo community sites didn't cover this past Winter's CPL and I wish they did. I followed the winter CPL, downloading a HDD full of images, movies, and write ups. The media I viewed was amazing. The CPL knows how to run a tournament. CPL makes AGP and Halo50k look like very small LAN parties. The hype is incredible. The press coverage was amazing. The teams were treated like professional athletes and the sponsors showed their tight relationship with CPL. It truly was an international event with teams, sponsors, and press from around the globe. My eyes were opened to the world of Counter Strike, which is 20 times larger than Halo.
The CPL has set the standard for going huge in Halo tournaments. However, Halo PC has been losing top-notch, professional teams steadily since its release. For the most part, only the professional teams attend the CPL and now it's looking like there isn't going to be enough interest to hold another Halo PC tournament.
The cooked Gamers are looking to attend; however, it looks like we'll not know the fate of CPL for another few weeks.

Coverage
In reply to: Most Halo community sites didJust to comment-- in all fairness, the idea of professional gaming, while interesting, isn't something I have experience with, and it simply isn't possible for me to attend most of these events (mostly due to geography).
By chance I was in the US for a Halo LANfest in the Boston area last summer. A lot of those LANfests and Fan Fests are done by community people or Bungie people who have been around a long time, so they at least get mentioned if not covered. Look at the sheer number of Bungiefen who posted photos from Offensive Tetraboxing.
I don't know anybody who's going to CPL, though, and I can't attend myself-- so other than announcing the result when there is one, there wouldn't be too much R.net could do about it.
Of course, if somebody volunteered to be a remote correspondent ;-)
