mad.max forwarded us an interesting press announcement, which states how some former Sega executives plan to offer a new gaming network to both personal computer users and console gamers. It's a bit too large to slap up in the news, so I've placed it here in the forum. Here's the essential information:
Founded with other former Sega.com employees, New Millennium Entertainment was created to feature a dedicated online gaming infrastructure to deliver a high-speed, low-latency experience for all gaming platforms. Delivering service to subscribers in the U.S. and Canada, New Millennium offers a high-speed network with the capacity to handle up to one million simultaneous gamers. Additionally, the network will support all gaming platforms that ship with an online capability, including personal computers, Playstation(R)2, Microsoft(R) X-Box, Nintendo(R) GAMECUBE and Sega(R) Dreamcast.
I've fired off an e-mail to their PR person, to see if they might be forthcoming with anticipated rates for the network. I suspect that console gamers will be more interested than those on PCs and Macs... especially because the online multiplayer experience hasn't yet really materialized for the console world. Then again... how much money do most console gamers have? Can they afford a standard monthy fee just to game?
