Not really our jurisdiction, but a pair of interesting Marathon screenshots hiding on CPHL were pointed out to me a few days ago, and subsequent investigation turned up no prior reports on them. I'll feel rather silly if these are old news, but the creation dates were fairly recent... anyways, here they are for your viewing pleasure:
No, really... there's an interesting similarity between one symbol and another shown in today's speculations at the Marathon's Story page. For those who don't visit that site with any regularity, writers-in have found numerous similarities between the Marathon symbols and other images throughout the Internet. Just one more piece of the conspiracy for Bungie World Domination. ;-)
Shamelessly copied and pasted from the news at CPHL:
Marathon development site is now active @ sourceforge.sourceforge.net/project/?group_id=1997
When propagated, it will be marathon.sourceforge.net
Coders please register w/ sourceforge and then PM or e'mail me (zin@clanplaid.net) your SourceForge login to get added to the team.
Not a lot to report today. Yes yes, I'm sure you're all shocked and dismayed, wondering how this could possibly be, but I assure you there really isn't much happening.
Lifted fresh from Marathon's Story comes word that long time Marathon and Myth application codewarrior Bo Lindbergh has posted a cleaned up version of the recently released Marathon 2 source code. To clarify, a snippet from the post:
SlashDot.Org, one of the primary news sites for geeks on the Internet, posted a news item on the Marathon 2 source-code GPL release. Kudos to Bravehamster for making them aware of this.
As posted by Marathon's Story, the article has received a goodly number of responses - Marathon is well remembered. Of significant note is that Jason Pellerin (Bungie's SysAdmin) posted a reply:
In response to gamers' questions about the Marathon 2 (for PC) source code, VirtualWolf reports that this little tidbit was in the Marathon 2 (for Mac) ReadMe file:
Kudos to Jeff Myers, who has set up a developer's mailing list for you adventurous souls out there who downloaded the Marathon 2 source code. From the post:
I have set up a developer mailing list for the marathon code You can subscribe by sending mail to listserv@3dgamedev.com with subscribe marathon_codingOf course please replace with your actual name.
Kudos to MAgh Tuireadh, who posted word that he has mirrored the Marathon 2 source code for those of you having trouble getting onto Bungie's server:
Quick thinking on his part, as this should save a lot of people a lot of headaches.
Do we have some great sleuths in our community or what? A number of Bungiefen have been hoping, fervently, that the much anticipated #2 would be the Marathon source code. Well, jooz guyz just got your wish! Red Hot Ryan was the first person to pass us the news, so he deserves a fat kudos from the rest of us. Here's a PR, ripped straight from Mac Gamer's Ledge:
Need more reading material? Marathon's Story has drawn a formidable number of parallels between Halo and Marathon today, as well as made a few points concerning the timeline. Good, thought provoking stuff... lets just hope we get some answers to go with it.
I wanted to say pfhive , but I figured that would just be pushing it. Hamish at Marathon's Story, arguably the center of the Marathon universe, reminds us all that Marathon was officially released on this date five years ago, box or no box. In celebration, he has pulled some great old items out of his formidable archives (7 gigs strong, of course), so swing by and enjoy the blast from the past.
Gary Simmons, the Battle Cat to old school Marathon junkies, sends word that Orbital Arm is now officially open for business. Here's an excerpt from the PR:
As posted at Marathon's Story, the site in the prior announcement is not yet ready for public consumption. The link has been removed, as has the one on Marathon's Story, but keep an eye out for it in days and months to come.
