ANSWER: im reading fall of reach for the 2ed time and the spartans were on their way to intercept a covinant cruser and take control of it and find the covinant home world. on the way it was decovered that an entire fleet were headed towards reach. they turned around and went back to reach thinking that after the battle there was goin to be a damaged cruser that the spartans could use.... they were sorly mistaken. reach was beseiged and the only thing that kept it from annaliation was the orbital MAC guns. the prob was that a bunch of covinant droop ships had made it to the ground and were advanceing toward the MAC gun genarators. the other prob was a ships nav charts wernt destroied and were still on an abandoned ship, so the MC split his squad:fred, linda, and the MC would destory the NAV data and the other 30 spartans would defend the base and genarators. on the space opp fred was caught in an explosion abd jettisoned into space. at the end after the data was destoryed lida had to open the hanger door manually for them to escape, while she wasnt looking a jackal shot her in the head and chest... the MC jumped from the dropship and picked her up. she was dead..... he took her to the ship to be frozen and went to the bridge. he asked to go and help his team running the ground opps. but he couldnt. they had to leave now and his team was left behind .......
Hey shib, u said that the remaining 30 spartans were left behind on reach, to defend the MAC guns, but it doesnt specify that they got killed, and the MAC guns held off the cruisers so they prbably couldnt shoot their guns at the planet, there fore, the only way to destroy a planet is to literally blow the whole thing up, or bombard it, which the cruisers couldnt, and on the ground with the spartans, the covenant couldnt possibly have been a match for them, so maybe they werent killed, but just stranded on Reach, ive never read The Fall Of Reach, but maybe when the chief finds that Earth is destroyed, maybe he will goto Reach and see if any survived.
And, when linda got killed by two shots to the head and chest, how could that be? they have shields! in legendary mode it takes TEN, yes, TEN shots to kill you!!!!! unless the chief was the only one to have shields........

the covinant had a ship with a weapon so powerful that it destorys things in one hit, and the weapon travled at light speed. and most of the guns were destoryed (i think only 8/9 left) and there was still at least 150 covinant left and all the other human ships were already destoryed .

Yup.. They had some kind of weapon to "glass" a planet.. (iow. completely kill everything living on a planet).

The book has been based on the game, not the other way around. But then again, Linda had to die somehow. After rereading that part of the book I can conclude that Linda first gets a Jackel plasma bolt in her back, another blot of fire blazed her from the upper decks and splashed across her front. At this time her shields went down. Then 2 more bolts hitted her chest and a third blast hitted her helmet. MC orders the marines to get her in the Pelican and after MC checked Linda he sees that sections of her armor were melted and adhered to her. Underneath, in patches, bits of carbonized bone showed. He checked her vital functions on his HUD and saw her vital function were dangerously low. A few seconds later she died.
So basicly she died from her wounds.
I think Linda died from wounds caused by shots fired from nearby.
uh, the flood was NOT realesed by the covies b/c they are scared S****** of it, as cortana explains. so that mean that the covies didnt release it, and if they didnt release it, then the humans must have.
: I was just playing the level "Halo" when I noted again one
: of the similarities between Halo and Myth-- the zombie
: theme.
:
: In Myth, the armies of the Dark are bolstered by the
: fallen human soldiers. This is foreshadowed in the cutscene
: before "Crow's Bridge" where the two soldiers talk about a
: recent battle after which no bodies were found, and wonder
: what happened to the bodies.
:
: Of course, we find out later what happens to them-- that
: they become Thrall, the foot soldiers of the undead.
:
: In the second level of Halo, entitled "Halo", the first
: crashed escape pod we see after the light bridge sequence
: has no survivors-- but also no dead.
:
: There are 3 other locations on the map that have escape
: pods, each with a group of survivors. But the first pod has
: neither survivors nor bodies. If you have a specific marine
: with you in the warthog when you encounter this pod, he'll
: remark that the weapons locker broke open, scattering
: weapons and supplies-- but that there are no bodies.
:
: "Where are the bodies?" he asks.
:
: It's eerily similar to the dialogue between the two
: soldiers on "Crow's Bridge". We know what was happening
: there, and we eventually find out that something similar is
: going on here. In "Keyes" Cortana tells us that the Flood
: are gathering bodies in the hangar, presumably for
: infection.
:
: So what we seem to have here is two games by the same
: group of people, both sharing a common theme: enemies that
: are comprised of the ranks of the dead on your own side.
:
: Except... in the second level of Halo we haven't seen the
: Flood yet. Neither have the Covenant, as far as we know.
: We're led to believe that the Covenant release them later,
: because 343GS says this during "The Library"-- and this
: bolsters our own perception of events in "343 Guilty Spark"
: where it seems we run into the Covenant trying to backtrack
: from their efforts to break into what they (and Keyes) think
: is a weapons cache.
:
: But... what if 343GS is lying?
:
: If he is, it could explain a few other mysterious things
: about the Halo.
:
: Like, for instance-- if it was designed to be a "fortress
: world" to imprison the Flood... why the hell is it so big?
: Why does it have an ecosystem? Why bother will any of that
: if all it is for is to 1) contain a dangerous species deep
: inside a locked chamber, and 2) destroy all sentient life
: over a certain biomass should the Flood escape?
:
: If the containment held for such a long time, and the
: Flood were safe and sound deep in the bowels of Halo... why
: bother with such a drastic failsafe as killing off the
: entire universe?
:
: Why, you ask?
:
: Because the risk of the Flood escaping was actually much
: higher than it looks like. Because Halo was NOT built merely
: to contain the Flood. If it were, it's an awful waste of
: space and resouces.
:
: It was made to study the interaction between dangerous
: species such as the Flood and other species. Should the
: interaction get out of control, and give the Flood the
: resources to escape (access to spacecraft) it was designed
: to counter that possibility.
:
: So the Halo isn't there just to imprison the Flood. They
: are supposed to stay on it. But not necessarily in some
: deep, dark cell. If someone were to land on this green,
: inviting, interesting environment, the builders planned for
: them to run into the Flood sooner or later-- in fact, the
: sooner, the better.
:
: Perhaps this is why on the second level, long before the
: Flood are ever seen and before either Keyes or the Covenant
: go in search of the Control Room or any weapons cache, we
: have missing Marine bodies with no explanation-- because the
: Flood are already loose. In fact, the builders intended that
: anyone landing on the Halo would encounter them, so the
: resulting interaction could be observed and studied-- these
: activities GS refers to, even if he is not specific about
: how the "research" is conducted. Given the Flood's parasitic
: nature, it is doubtful there is much interesting to observe
: about them except in the presence of a host species. And how
: will they find that if you lock them up?
:
: If this is true, then the Monitor is a filty liar. But I
: doubt that would suprise anyone. Either that, or he himself
: is not fully aware of the Halo's dark purpose...
:
if your read the fall of reach cortana says "they clearly trying to protect somthing why else would they put up such a fight in this area and that area was around Halo and then after they attack P.O.A they fallow us onto Halo why because they knew what was on it and whats in it is flood.

Halo.bungie.org has posted a great new feature: a guide to the Flood (http://halo.bungie.org/flood)! Louis Wu made a recent visit to our offices, and apparently made off with some classified shots thanks to inside help. Candyman!
That's from Bungie's T&R site, January 17th.
So I consider that more official than just assumption and speculation.
Anyhow, my hope is we never hear from the Flood again since they're so damned boring to fight, so hopefully none of this even matters =)
Also, just so you know, Fall of Reach doesn't mention or hint at the Flood in any way at all, it's a prequel to Halo, just giving some background information into the whole Covenant/Human conflict and the MC himself.

Ahh... ok, that makes sense then. Although, to be honest, even if this is Official Information at this point I still think it evolved more or less as a response to forum questions rather than something from the Halo Bible. But I could be wrong :)

I love fighting the flood, especially when the Covenant are there as well. As far as I know they are coming back in Halo 2. How they do this, I have no idea.

Well, they could be on other Halo installations, which we know exist. Or perhaps some did escape Halo. Perhaps infection forms can survive the vacuum of space.
To be honest, though, what was interesting was 2-way fights-- but not the Flood in particular. Multiple combatants is a standard feature in Bungie games, I'm sure Halo 2 will have it, too.
It works really well, because you can decide who you'd rather fight alone and start picking off the other group until they're all gone, or you can just leave them all to kill each other.
I have to say that altough I enjoy fighting the flood they get more repetitive than fighting the Covenant. What would make the flood more interesting is if there were more forms of them.

ok . now all you guys sound lyk "what if" "what if" . what if when halo blew up it accelerated the flood spores into slipspace in the direction of earth? see how OUTRAGOUS that sounds. some of you have good points but some are getting a little TOO FAR out there. i mean the MC would kno between earth and halo if somthing was on the longsword's outside.
Ahhh.....someone said something bout the flood in halo 2, and how they get there, i think that b4 the chiefe jumped into the fighter in the PoA that a few infection forms hid inside, that door was wide open for anyone or ANYTHING to get in there!!!! maybe they new they couldnt take on the master chief, so they hid, and maybe the covies see a longsword floating out there, they tractor it in and some grunt tekkie guy gets in fected....maybe....

ok that is streching it a little FAR its just a game(a VERY GOOD ONE AT THAT) but if u want to go into ways the flood could escape it could go on forever. lyk the took a covinant ship and left or they could survive in a vaccum.. u getting my point????

HOW BOUT..... NO! that is so absurd. in the game the flood spared no one. as cortana said "we're ALL equally eddible"....... (i just played that level (tb) so i kno its right)
okey dokey heres my view monitor said that there are more then 1 halo what are the odds that the 1 halo that had flood in it was the one we landed on? i believe that there are flood on the other halos that the monotor spoke of. But thats just me.
I agree with you, I believe that the entire purpose of the Halos is that they are research centres, mainly for learning about the flood. Presumably destroying this one before it activated stopped any of the others doing so, so maybe the flood will get out of them. But how? The only reason they got out of 'our' Halo is because someone let them out accidentally.
listen I got another theory theres a planet beside halo so what I think is thate the othere haloes are around the planet and that the ppl who built the haloes fought against whatever was on that planet so the they built the haloes to destroy the planet and put the flood on the haloes to protect them and the put the inviroments on the haloes the the ppl on the planet woundt suspect anything. If any1 knos any way im wrong or something plz tell me cause i bought the game about 4 days ago but ive played it before and stuff so i dont know all.

dude learn how to spell. i couldnt even understand that.
I reckon that's quite a good theory, but three things make me think it may be wrong. Firstly, we see plenty of views from space near Halo, and we see no other Halos, but then we can't see that much and the planet itself obscures our vision so they could be there, out of view. The second thing is, if someone you were fighting built hospitable ring worlds abovve your planet, wouldn't you be suspicios anyway? I know I would! Finally, the planet is actually apparently a gas giant like Jupiter, so nothing could even stand on it's surface. So I doubt there's life there. The "compass" on the assault rifle points to it because Halo is a ring so it has no magnetic north and south.
However the large planet Halo is floating above is definetely significant in some way. I don't know if you've got this far yet but on level five you visit the control room of Halo, but you can get a better looks at it on level eight because you can walk round it yourself. All around the outside of this huge room is a hige, 3D map of Halo itself. In the middle of the room is a hologram of the planet Halo orbits, and you can see there that Halo is actually sandwiched between the planet and it's moon. They wouldn't have gone to all the trouble of putting it on the map if it wasn't important, would they? By the way, apparently the planet is called "Threshold" and the moon is called "Basis".
All of this is actually deep background, and may not actually end up being important to any events in the game plot.
Halo orbits a LaGrange point between the planet and the moon-- basically, a stable orbit where the gravitational pull between the two bodies where an object can remain stationary without expending power.
As for other nearby Halos-- since Halo's pulse has a range of 25,000 light years, I'm guessing the nearest one need not be closer than 50,000 light years away, otherwise their pulse ranges would overlap.

I don't think these things will ultimately be that important, but it seems a shame to throw away all this interesting stuff and not use it, so I hope they can work it in. Or, alternatively come up with some new stuff that's even better.

Im not sure if it does it when Halo first boots but the other night I finished the maw level again just because I like too see how fast I can escape in the warthog , anyhow after the credits went up I just stared watching the title screen where the camera pans round halo itsself and when the camera came round the far side of halo in the distance you can see another ring like object which is quite small so it must be some distance away , I presume this is another Halo , as we know there are at least 4 as the monitor states he is the monitor of installation 04.
Another thing Halo's primary use was to contain and study the flood not as a weapon against anybody living on threshold which is probably an inhospitable planet anyway.

I didn't know about that other ring-shaped object-I'll be looking next time, that's for sure!
I think you're probably right about Thershold, it's a gas giant like the planet Jupiter, so you couldn't even stand on the surface. Then again, there may be some kind of lifeform there unlike anything on earth or from the Covenant planets that can live there. As for the moon, Basis, I don't know. Maybe there's life on that.
kiwi, you are PARTIALY right. the halo was built to study the flood. the weapon on halo was ment not as a weapon but as a way of preventing the flood form spreading, as we kow from playing the two betrayals. there is more than one halo. all of them have the flood. o and just as an extra, halo 2 takes place on earth. and yes that means the covenant found earth. and yes the flood is there. my theroy of how the flood got on earth was that a peice of the halo with the infection landed on earth.
In AoTCR in the room just before my friend always gets the roket launcher and hop into the passenger seat. If I do anything that lifts the warthog of the ground he fires at me. It would be nice in Halo 2 to have the option to turn the green indicator off when playing Co-op, it would give it some realism and would be great for when your messing around killing your buddies.

: pluse think about all the rest of the battle. also i think
: the game would suck if it were THAT realistic and thats why
: i think bungie gives us some le-way. in the books the
: marines could be killed in one hit from a deriect shot

In reply to: Re: That's true, however...It works really well, because you can decide who you'd rather fight alone and start picking off the other group until they're all gone, or you can just leave them all to kill each other.
I have to say that altough I enjoy fighting the flood they get more repetitive than fighting the Covenant. What would make the flood more interesting is if there were more forms of them.

Re: Halo + Flood = How?
In reply to: Re: Halo + Flood = How?I agree with you, I believe that the entire purpose of the Halos is that they are research centres, mainly for learning about the flood. Presumably destroying this one before it activated stopped any of the others doing so, so maybe the flood will get out of them. But how? The only reason they got out of 'our' Halo is because someone let them out accidentally.

Re: Halo + Flood = How?
In reply to: Re: Halo + Flood = How?I reckon that's quite a good theory, but three things make me think it may be wrong.

Re: Halo + Flood = How?
In reply to: Re: Halo + Flood = How?All of this is actually deep background, and may not actually end up being important to any events in the game plot.

Re: Halo + Flood = How?
In reply to: Re: Halo + Flood = How?kiwi, you are PARTIALY right. the halo was built to study the flood. the weapon on halo was ment not as a weapon but as a way of preventing the flood form spreading, as we kow from playing the two betrayals. there is more than one halo. all of them have the flood. o and just as an extra, halo 2 takes place on earth. and yes that means the covenant found earth. and yes the flood is there. my theroy of how the flood got on earth was that a peice of the halo with the infection landed on earth.
