The Halo 2 trailer makes a big deal of summarizing the Master Chief's accomplishments from the first game:

exploring the Halo
fighting the Covenant
destroying the Flood
outwitting 343GS

But this seems to raise a few questions.

Did he really outwit 343GS? GS lived and escaped... will he be back? In this game, or the next one?

How did the Covenant find Earth? All these completed missions are nice... but the ORDERS that you're given in the beginning of the first game are to take Cortana down to the ring surface and keep her AWAY from the Covenant, so that she's not captured. Why? To keep the location of Earth from the Covenant.

Apparently that didn't work. Either the Covenant some how found it anyway (a remnant of Cortana's knowledge in the Halo's core? From 343GS? Some other way entirely? Or perhaps not even from Cortana at all?

Any ideas?

I think that the covenant found earth by following the Master Chief's Ship back home.

a friend of mine asked a similar question; as the "blind" jump (quite well directed, really) drew the entire Covenant force after you, who were all presumably destroyed on Halo, who was left to reach Earth? of course, to assume like he did that the Covies had but one battle group is a little silly. It was only the one that destroyed Reach that followed the PoA, after all. Reach was also touted as the last stronghold before Earth, which would imply a spatial closeness. Thus, it would seem logical to say that the Covenant found Earth on their own; it was only a matter of time after all. It's tough to hide a (relatively) stationary solar system.

It would be nice if Halo 2 expanded on some of the stuff seen in the book, and you went on a mission to the Covenant homeworld, complete with ship-to-ship combat, maybe even some deep-space fighter-flying. Pity about Redmond getting nuked, but hopefully Cortana didn't need to upgrade to the next version of windows...

343GS definitely didn't seem to be outwitted, as he was there ahead of you every step of the way... couldn't really do a thing to stop you though (even on Legendary, the Sentinals are little more than an annoyance). Of course, the MC didn't really do anything but follow Cortana's orders... so maybe the trailer refers to the two as a unit.

heh... all this makes me glad i finally caved and got an xbox :P

you know that at the end of the book that there were more SPARTANS being trained so that might meen there are more SPARTANS in the gameand in the trailer mc jumps onto a covie destroyer so that must meen that its a race to see who can destroy eachothers home world first.

Earendil's picture

In reply to: Re: How did the Covenant find Earth?

the POA was not the only ship left after the battle. and they all "randomly" jumped to keep the the covies from tracking there path to earth. but the covies had tracked the PoA with a device (of the nature I forget) and they could have done the same with any of the other ships. or just givin chase.

not all the covies followed the PoA anyway.

I'll think of and add more too this later.

I believe they're referring to you and Cortana stopping 343 from toasting intelligent life.

Considering Cortana is still hanging around the Chief, it's a good guess that they're a team now.

And yes, the covvies have quite a few battle groups. It has been theorized that the group that followed the POA wasn't really all that big compared to the whole of Covenant forces. They wouldn't waste a lot of resources following such a small and seemingly unimportant ship. Of course, after they found out it was the flagship from it's databases, (not sure if they knew it was or not) they might have sent reinforcements, but the system evac order for Halo had probably already been given, so they couldn't do much but run away.

Knowing Bungie, Cortana probably uses Mac OS 42.7 :)

They must have used a reverse tachyon beam to track the MC. Its always a reverse tachyon beam. Picard damn near destroyed the universe with reverse tachyon beams. A pox on reverse tachyons!

GS did not help help the covi. they all ready had earth blown half up before WE even got there. also i finished the book for the 3RD time. there were so many ways to find earth. there were hundreds of destroyed and damaged ships. they could have boarded them and stole the NAV cube.

Because I live in the UK I have to wait till MARCH 2003!!!! Surely as its connecting through the web everyone can use it all at once?

Why is Microsoft torturing its customers?!

While Xbox Live clients *are* connecting via the Internet, I am sure MS is going to want to host regional data centers for Europe and Asia to make sure connections are relatively low latency.

The bandwidth between the US and Europe is sometimes a bit of a bottleneck, and even short delays would cause lag.

Not so! I for one have died with the MC slumping into a few different sad-looking corpse postures, including at least one face-up.

Although, thinking on it, I sort of remember that he always died in the same one or two ways, face-down, until I started on Legendary. That might just be because Legendary produces more fatalities, though.

that has never happened to me...I think you must have scratched your Halo disc, or (though this is probably impossible) there is some major hardware error on your XBOX. the only glitch that has happened to me that is remotely similar is that on the level "Keyes", while i was walking inside the covenant ship, i suddenly found myself under the ship, and falling through space to my death (though it did give me a cool view of Halo and that planet).

Outside levels there is a sort of 'misty deah zone' where it just goes on forever and you fall and die, but on some you don't, like the multiplayer map sidewinder where you can stand outside and look in.

Well now that we've seen the trailer, I was pretty damn impressed by the steps that Bungie has taken with the new engine. The colours and textures are very good, mabye some more different elements might be incorporated to make it more 'active looking' and inviting. The MC looks great as well! His movements are very fluent and his actions are not corny. The MC's Mjolnir suit looks great too, mabye a bit less green would look better. Also a more lighter / deeper, metallic green than he has on his armour now that looks better than the snot green. Everything else looks incredible and definantly has some really good designs.

I've noticed that much of Halo(2) might be derived from the movie Aliens and that sort of Starcraft genre if you know what I'm getting at. Kind of like a battle between different species using the most sophisticated technology and weapons. This is the kind of Sci-Fi glamour that I'd like to see more of and with the compelling and awesome story like Halo, I'd have to say that Bungie is definantly pushing the right buttons in terms of making one the most influential and realistic story yet!

I don't think Halo should be referred as a game anymore but an adventure into a universe where the fate of humanity rests upon a 1 man bastion against a more powerful alien race. As for a story for Halo 2, well that's something I can't predict but rest assured I can say that it'll be extremely interesting to see what happens in the next chapter of Halo.

Music is definantly compelling and it really does fit with what actually happens in the trailer. Also the music puts excellent passive emotive language to what's happening especially when the MC is hurtling towards Earth and is about to board one of the Covenant ships.

Awesome work with Halo you guys at Bungie and keep it up!

One last thing... How cool do those Covenant Battlecruisers look!!!

Well said. I picked up on that Aliens style vibe as well. I like it. I hope bungie uses lighting effects like the red ones seen in the ship, all over the game. I also hope this game has a darker, more scary feel to it, like all the games in the Marathon series. Sometimes those games would scare the ever-loving crap out of me. As for the MC's suit... I like the look and color scheme that he has. Its very military looking. I also love the way it is all dinged up from all of his previous battles. Rock on Bungie. I just wish that I didn't have to wait a year for this game...

Does anyone else feel the same vibe as me from this trailer? When Bungie created Myth2, they didn't use a new engine... they just added some limited features to it (Minor Physics adjustments, color parameters, map size, pathfinding, etc). This worked out nicely for the Myth series since Myth2 is strategy oriented, and they pretty much had the best they could do with the first one, the second was basically Myth1 with the much wanted luxuries... but the same at heart. After reading the interview on bungie.net about making the trailer, I noticed the guy was shy to reveal any exciting improvements that WOULD help the game, and not spoil too much. I'm talking about the latest technology, complex (dynamic?) lighting (not painted on), highly responsive/dynamic enviroments, advanced per-pixel effects). The point I'm getting to is, all that left out would be dandy if the game was centered around a heavily multiplayer based community, as myth was, because when people go out and buy this for the xbox.. it'll be like sitting through Jurassic Park 3.

PS. Maybe it was just because i was running QT on a Pc, but did anyone else get the wiff of "cut'n'paste" when they saw those alien ships drift by at the end of the trailer? :D

actions may speak louder than words, but you still dont move with any fluency... fluid is the word you seek I do believe.

what i liked about the trailer was all the little details that were done right, so much that you barely even notice them... there's a bit of realism that is lacking from many so-called realism games. The mushroom cloud explosions on Earth were a little odd, as the Covies use plasma weapons to glass planets; for the vaporization of clouds and oceans, and the melting of the planet's outer crust to take on the image of nuclear explosions doesn't click. Unless of course the human defence is using tactical nukes; if you know you're gonna lose, why not go out in a blaze of glory?

Yeah, why couldnt we see the thermal pollution effects of cow shit on the earth's atmosphere? What about those star formations, if I know my astronomy, the delthius minor nebula should be approximatley 84 degrees Northeast according to the ships point of reference.

Who cares if they didnt do research on a fantasized race? Do we even know if it is the Covenent? If so, can they not develop superior weapons since the first game? plz.

This is Bungie we're talking about here! They DO the detail stuff! My guess on the mushroom clouds is this. Those may not really be nukes as we think of them. Anything with a large enough kick to it is going to produce that kind of explosion. And who knows, maybe the Covies can't produce a large enough plasma shot to do that kind of damage so they're using nuclear weaponry. Or maybe the humans are nuking some low-flying covi cruisers.

And did the Chief get a new suit?

Indeed! It's not only nuclear weapons that cause mushroom clouds; anything really huge will do it.

:
: One last thing... How cool do those Covenant
: Battlecruisers look!!!

Hmm... I've seen everyone's posts. A lot of people have their own theories about where Halo 2 is going but they are all interesting.

1/ Covenant ships: If you have read the book 'Halo: The Fall Of Reach' then you'll know what the Covenant ships would roughly look like. The book describes them as massive, whale shaped ships and their hull has a heavy chrome of purple. When you apply white light (hence the sun reflection off the cruisers) you'll get that gleaming ship of light purple / blue / white chrome. The book says they're purple but that might mean that they have a hull with a majority of purple on it, usually when it's dark, after all it is in space. Also the 2nd mission on Halo the T&R is in the night area of Halo thus you see the majority of purple otherwise if you looked at it when they're in the trailer they have a heavy chrome on them. Otherwise you can say that this crap is wrong then mabye it's another Covenant ship that is the same class as the T&R (Note the under-fins at the head of the ship on the T&R and you can just make one of them out in the trailer on the ship closer to the camera, left-hand side) only it has a different paint job, mabye a ship with high significance like a flag-ship... 2 of them. In any case I think they're great, very unique and Bungie should keep them that way, 'nuff said.

2/ Explosions on Earth: Mabye it isn't Earth..... Even though it has a blue hue and there is a moon in the background..., mabye it's another planet like Earth?....

Even though we don't like the idea that it's not Earth, your probably wondering why you don't like the idea that it IS Earth. Mabye it's because the Covenant are already bombarding the planet and the MC is too late to save Earth, HOW THE HELL IS BUNGIE GONNA REVOLVE AROUND A STORY LIKE THAT you say? Not a very easy question to answer and unfortunatly I don't have an answer for it either but patience and you'll know soon enough. As for the 'Nuclear explosions' they do look mushroom-cloud in appearance but the hydrogen bomb does the same thing! One person pointed out it could be the humans blowing up low-level Covenant ships which mabye true. But the trailer gives the first impression of the Covenant bombing the planet. My best theory could be that the Covenant are doing what they did on Sigma Octanus when they were looking for that weird rock (read the book) and for some reason they might want to spare Earth to do something on it insted of glassing the planet. Which would probably mean the explosions are just their smaller weapons blowing up key areas on Earth where mabye planetary guns are there or some crap like that.

There's probably no end to theories but like I said before we gotta wait to find out, I know it sux but do something else in the meantime until Bungie announces another update. Hopefully soon enough!
