Not too long hopefully. :)
In my mingling with a bunch of experienced online Halo players during the tournament, I've been hearing a consistent thumbs up for Xbox Ladder over Gamespy and XboxConnect. Of course, none of them had tried Aquaduct.

Aquaduct is the best tunneling software I've used. I also own a(n old) Windows machine and am able to run XboxConnect and GameSpy Arcade. I like Aquaduct more for a variety of reasons. The first would be that it's a Mac OS X app. With that comes a look that isn't grotesque, no banners, and it actually doesn't crash. You open Aquaduct and see two buttons: host and connect. One thing that's weird is you have to enter your root password to host games. There is a perfectly logical explanation for this, but I forget what it is.
GameRanger and Aquaduct run hand-in-hand. You use GameRanger to find other Mac Xbox players and Aquaduct to actually play the game. This reminds me to point out that Halo isn't the only tunnelable game. I've played Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 with it and it was great. You can also play one of the NASCAR games and MotoGP with it.
Aquaduct will be getting another update within a week or two. New features include pinging, compressed packets, cleaner interface, and a few other goodies. It's something to look forward to, that's for sure.
If you (or anyone else here) want to play some games sometime, let me know.

I believe that they mean this as an internet - based coop play ... this would follow the orignal design for Halo.

Actually, wasn't the original design for Halo supposed to consist of players controlling both Covenant and human characters? I remember in the video interview with Charles and Doug, Doug was stressing the point that they wanted to make the experience of playing as human or playing as Covenant to be "distincly different." Apparently, they were planning on letting us control both types of characters.
I always dreamed about being able to play the single player campaigns while having all the characters (both Covenant and human) be actual players. I never emailed Bungie about the idea though.
It is an interesting concept. Because human players who dies can be respawned as reinforcements (similar to the style in RtCW, but you arrive on the dropship), and Covenant players can respawn in different sectors of the level as the human players advance through the level.
This would actually make for some intense gameplay. Hell, they can even create similar "missions" that contain Covenant, humans, and an objective, but have them be multiplayer-only levels suited for a few dozen online players. That would genuinely rock.

I beliave if Covenant are going to be playable in multiplayer, one should have to work for them. For example, to unlock a Grunt, you must beat the game on Easy, for Jackals, it would be Normal, for Elites it would be Heroic, and for Hunters it would be Legendary.
In reply to: Re: Playing as Covenant in multiplayer
Interesting.
But I think there are some balance issues that would have to be worked out.
I mean... I think it would hardly be worth playing in multiplayer mode as a grunt, for instance-- unless that was the only way to get a fuelrod gun.

Perhaps the possibilty of creating a custom player and getting combat points for completing missions and being able to distribute them into certain abilities. Like stealth and marksmanship.
maybe a possibilty of co-op multiplayer on thhe internet is creating your own little outfit with each person outfitted with their own weapon that they are qualified for. This would create a tactical squad based multiplayer game.

Actually, I remember this idea being discussed back before Halo was released. If I remember, the answer was that it had been thought about, but that they preferred to let players do this on their own-- in other words, players who spend more time driving the jeep would, naturally, be better jeep drivers, and the same for other vehicles and weapons.

Which is what a lot of people wanted from the original-- it'll be nice to see how this plays out in the sequel.
Hmmm... Being a covenant player in halo would really give me a different idea. I would think of the game more like humans vs. covenant on an actual level with people battling for objectives.
For example, I guess I can use a current level as an example for an idea...
POA, you have the attacking covenant forces trying to gain objectives like GET TO CRYO CHAMBER or DESTROY ALL LIFEBOATS while the human forces have objectives like PREVENT COVENANT FROM BOARDING or SEAL OFF ::insert section/area here::
Get my drift? Seems like a good idea to me but of course it'd be on a MUCH MUCH larger scale.
In reply to: Re: Playing as Covenant in multiplayer
I love that idea. I always wanted Halo multiplayer to be more of a campaign and less... well... deathmatchy.
CTF is fine, but what I really wanted was a way to bring the multiplayer experience to the story.

'net MP, storyline, and graphics are all good, but what about more BoBs? The first five-six levels in Halo are my favorite, since the BoBs stick around long enough for some amusing fights and chatter. More vehicles to panic the BoBs in takes second, though.

The bobs suck in Halo. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they are there because they're interesting and funny, but they suck when it comes to combat. I was in Florida on vacation when Halo was released and I remember reading its reviews since they were all I had. EGM said the marines worked really well together and helped the Master Chief progress. Other publications said there would be times when the marines would be leading YOU. All crap. On Normal, the marines are marginally useful, but they hardly ever matter. On Heroic and Legendary, they're practically dead as soon as a battle breaks out. I don't expect the marines to be at all comparable to the Master Chief, but their utter uselessness disappoints.

There are a few points in Legendary where it seems they die very quickly. Sometimes nearly all of them are dead before I even round the corner in AotCR where you pick up the Scorpion.
Other times, it seems to vary. Sometimes all of them get wiped out in the initial battle on SC, other times three or four survive (if wounded).

Well it all depends on how good you are at the game!!
When I play Halo on Heroic or Legendary I try to see if I can keep them alive.. A challenge if you will to take them as far as I can into the level, besides it would get boring if they ran in gunho and killed everything for you.. where’s the fun in that?

Well, there's a fine line between making sure your support troops aren't as good as or better than you... and making them cannon fodder.
There are some places where, quite seriously, they are cannon fodder on Legendary-- the grav lift room in T&R, for instance. It takes serious effort to keep them alive there.
You know what would be good!.. a nice Braveheart type part in Halo 2 where you have about 20 marines and you up against a Sh*t load of Covenant on a battlefield running at each other.

There was a remark in the Halo 2 release that basically indicated the graphics in Halo 2 would be better.
Interesting. I wonder if that means that it will look better, but still stutter in complicated, crowded scenes just like the original does. Myself, I'd prefer to see the same graphics, with a better story, more content, and a slightly smoother framerate.
But that's just me.
Or maybe more crowded scenes, but with graphics of the same quality.

I don’t know about you or anybody else but if Halo 2 was released with the same graphics as it had before I would not be too disappointed...
As long as it had more levels, more marine "team" levels, big outside landscape levels i.e. like AotCR or Two betrayals. and a more in-depth storyline.
But my all time favourite thing about Halo was the co-op missions. There is nothing quite like taking on a level, you and a mate, watching each other’s six, working as a team....
Now I’m just clutching to straws but it would be nice to see a random mission generator in Halo 2.. Something different every time.. But I’ll keep dreaming.

I wouldnt mind what the graphics were (at a minimum of halo 1) but my x box ran smooth in halo 1 i want to see more levels, longer game play and possibly a new flying thing, like the banshee in "if i had a super weapon" on the assult on the control room mission
now that everyone has discovered the myriad of marathon easter eggs scattered thru out halo, what will be added to halo 2 as a result? more cnections? i have concluded that although halo is not a sequel to marathon, the storyline connections are as erie as the eggs. and halo is almost certainly related to marathon's storyline in some way or another. and for anyone who has read the fall of reach, did you notice the reference to a "marathon class ship" in the fleet? and the fact that the moniter thinks he has seen you before, i think now we have some idea of who the marathon cyborg has been hanging around with, but as to what happened to him is another story cause i dont know to much bout marathon.
We heard a lot about underwater and above water vehicles back at the beginning of Halo's development. It would be pretty slick if they could implement at least one kind of naval vehicle. Entire underwater levels could also be done, but that might be stretching it a bit.
Imagine how much fun it would be to be able to pilot a jetski type vehicle loaded with rockets and/or chainguns. I get chills just thinking about how cool Halo 2 could be.
I'd like to see all the origonal vehicles (maybe with some new stuff on them) and a Jetpac, a hovercraft, a motorbike and some other kind of flying machine, other than the banshee.
It would be good if you could drive some kind of very strong APC so you could move marines around and drive them through really dangerous areas without them getting killed.
Map editors that run on consoles always suck. So Halo 2 should come with a second CD/DVD that has a map editor to run on a Mac/PC.
Make the map on the computer and dial into the IP adress from the X-Box to download it to the X-Box hard drive. I paid for 50,000+ block and god damnit I wanna use them.
Look at the Marathon community, it's still thriving because of Forge and Anvil. I know that Bungie will release a map editor for the Mac/PC version of Halo and the two things that make computer gaming better than console gaming are: third party add-ons and internet play. X-Box Live! should take care of the latter, why not have Halo 2 be the first to fullfill the other.
That would be sweet!
The only negative I could see to this is that it might open a window for viruses and hacks to enter the X-Box console, and that would be not be good.

Well, consoles these days are becoming so complicated and so, well, computerlike, that I think virus and/or network attack vulnerabilities are inevitable anyway, if not on the current generation of consoles than on future ones.
Second, I seem to recall someone saying awhile back that the levels would have to be re-designed (somewhat) to work well on a PC, but that wouldn't be a reason why you couldn't edit Xbox game levels (with the proper apps) on a PC and then upload them.
A neat feature, to be sure, but probably one pretty low on the list in terms of probability.
A map editor, now that would be awesome. Ya you could just transfer the maps by your home network, or what you said, or a CD-R... Has anyone heard of Starsiege Tribes and Tribes 2? I love those games because once you figure it out, it gives you complete control over maps and you could of course program mods. Best map editor I've ever seen, you could even download a program so that you could model new objects for maps in 3D, and make them interactive, like you could model and create your own type of turret! That was awesome. Halo 2 should have something like that...
: if they had a map editor like tribes 1, itd be... itd
: be...it be so amazing im...im speechless!!!!!!
ya that would be sweet... but it have to be either (1) On the Halo 2 disc itself (or on a separate disc you could buy, though that wouldn't be as good or (2) a downloadable program for PC and Mac, but that would mean players who don't have a CD burner on their comp wouldn't be able to make their own maps... which would be bad
The HBO forum has a thread on what Halo 2's subtitle might be (Halo's was "Combat Evolved", although it still seems unclear whether that was actually a part of the game's title or just a catchphrase added by someone in Marketing.
First iteration Bungie games don't always have such subtitles, but second ones often did (Marathon 2: Durandal did, but Marathon was just Marathon; Myth 1 was "The Fallen Lords" and Myth 2 was "Soulblighter".
Should Halo 2 have such a subtitle? What should it be?
Man, if you played Halo 1 then you're already way ahead of me. If I was Bungie I would have avoided a "subtitle" even in the first Halo. But now that they put it in, I'd say they have to do the same for the sequel. Not sure about what it could be...
Anyway, do you guys think that someone at Bungie would mind sending me a copy of Halo for free (and maybe an x-box too hehe)? *hint, bungie* *hint*

Playing as Covenant in multiplayer
What I want out of Halo 2 could be part of what Case was suggesting talking about Xbox Live.
He said that in solo-style pitched battles, that "every combatant" could be an Xbox Live player.
Does that mean we'll be able to play as Covenant units? Or internet-based cooperative play? Or netmaps with Covenant units instead of just cyborgs?
Some interesting possibilities there....

How About Bobs That Matter?
In reply to: What do I want?

In reply to: How About Bobs That Matter? There are a few points in Legendary where it seems they die very quickly. Sometimes nearly all of them are dead before I even round the corner in AotCR where you pick up the Scorpion.
Other times, it seems to vary. Sometimes all of them get wiped out in the initial battle on SC, other times three or four survive (if wounded).

Well, there's a fine line between making sure your support troops aren't as good as or better than you... and making them cannon fodder.
There are some places where, quite seriously, they are cannon fodder on Legendary-- the grav lift room in T&R, for instance. It takes serious effort to keep them alive there.

I'd like to see that, too.

Since Halo has exactly four drivable vehicles (Warthog, Scorpion, Banshee, Ghost) I guess that means at least 8.

Map Editor

But here's hoping Bungie makes a liar of me :)

Halo 2 Subtitle?
The HBO forum has a thread on what Halo 2's subtitle might be (Halo's was "Combat Evolved", although it still seems unclear whether that was actually a part of the game's title or just a catchphrase added by someone in Marketing.
First iteration Bungie games don't always have such subtitles, but second ones often did (Marathon 2: Durandal did, but Marathon was just Marathon; Myth 1 was "The Fallen Lords" and Myth 2 was "Soulblighter".
