Anger, Sadness and Envy Ep. 25: Destiny Revealed

artist:
Narcogen & Blackstar Featuring Miguel Chavez and Cody Miller

In Anger, Sadness and Envy Episode 25: Destiny Revealed, Narcogen, Blackstar, Miguel Chavez and Cody Miller talk about the reveal of Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions of Bungie's shared world shooter, Destiny.

(Music by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori, from the Destiny ARG track "Eighth" and the Destiny PS4 Announcement Trailer)

(This podcast is also available in M4A format with chapter markers and embedded images and URLs. You can find it in iTunes here or subscribe to the feed directly here.)

Public Relations: When Is A Liittle Too Little? They say always keep them wanting more, but did this reveal leave us wanting more in a good way, or a bad way?

Selling Out To Sony: Some Halo fans are upset that Bungie has "betrayed" them by making games for the Xbox's competition, the Sony PlayStation. Have they got a point?

Shared World Shooter: Is this thing a subscriptionless MMO or what?

Over The Rainbow: Time drained the color out of Halo, from the first game's day glo color palette to the greys of Reach. What is Destiny going to look like?

Class Act: Going beyond customizable starting weapon loadouts, Destiny is going to have player classes and special abilities. Is this thing an RPG, or a shooter with a twist?

So I'm pretty sure the "Always On" aspect of Destinty does not mean "Always playing with other people".

I'm fairly certain that Bungie has said that you can choose to play alone if you want, without interacting with others. So Cody's worries should be assuaged.

Two things:

Cody complained that he'd rather have no announcements until just before release - and yet he complains that Bungie didn't say enough in this reveal. I can't reconcile those two things.

And to the Cortana Letters - Mig is completely right. The original letters were written by Matt, and were absolutely intended to be an early reveal for the hardcore. Bitner's taking over (and then melting down) in no way reduces the original intention - they were DEFINITELY real, and meant to be serious.

Huh, I always wondered about Bitner, he seemed really liked by the community and had a good public image. Though I know Bungie folk always tip toe around the subject.
His step down letter to the community seemed fairly non-meltdowny anyway.

Yes, but even then, what Halo became drifted so far from what we can guess was in mind from the original letters. There's a spectrum along which stuff that was intended to be both serious and relevant is later undermined by changes in the direction of the title transforms into stuff that ended up being neither serious nor relevant. There's very little left in there.

Still, point taken.

Rampant for over se7en years.
