How about keeping the quote system from adding a : every time you quote? (cap it at one)

Good suggestion. I'll see if I can add that today-- should be just as easy as the similar fix regarding appending "Re:" to the subject.

: How about keeping the quote system from adding a : every

Hmm. You know, multiple levels of quoting help to distinguish who said what in a back-and-forth. Either way tho the quoting system is pretty primitive (compared to, for example, Usenet standard) so I guess it's not a big deal as people shouldn't try to do multilevel quoting very often anyway.

--

Few more observations for narc:

- When you are viewing the first post in a thread, that post is not shown in the thread view. This is the only case in which the post you are viewing is not shown in the thread view... an inconsistency that sorta jumps out and bugs me.

- On the front page of the UnConeD theme, the boxes in the right column are my personal box, then "community", then "futuremyth", then "forums"... then "community" again, then "futuremyth" again, then the remaining boxes. It's the Attack of the Clones!

- When previewing I'm still seeing the odd page construction described here: http://synfibers.com/rampancy/node.php?id=1&cid=149#149 altho from your post at the top of this thread I got the impression that you had been tinkering with that.

Yes, this is a Known Bug, caused primarily by the fact that, of all the code that runs the whole darn system, the code that runs that thread display is the ONLY BIT that I wrote myself from scratch, because it didn't exist. I suspect it's a consequence of having an English major try to be a programmer. I stopped working on that bit to put out all the other fires because the solution seemed "good enough" for the moment, in that at least threads displayed. I think this weekend I may have enough quiet time to sit and ponder the errors of my algorithm.

I disagree. Multi-quotes get as messy as multi-clones. You notice that such places as the old Rampancy and HBO get by just fine with only quoting the previous post. And it helps much when you're replying, and you only want to reply to a piece—you don't have to sit there deleting miles of quote-quote-quotes in a ten-feet long thread.

Hmm.. I'm going to have to continue to disagree.

I hated that about the old R.net and HBO. Way too many times the context for something was removed completely when the paragraph something was in response to is removed from the post.

Then a third party comes in, reads only what is there and not what was responded to, and goes charging off into the ether in some strange direction.

The interface flamewar at HBO right now is a pretty good example of this ;)

But at any rate, perhaps I can solve it all by making it optional :)

Actually, as I've just noted in the last site update (moved to the blog area) madmax wrote some pretty neat quotation display code for the forum at Subnova; I'll be looking to see if it can be integrated here.

It clutters up the reply form less, and gives unique HTML formatting to each level of quotation.

Yes. For some reason, the $op variable was out of scope in Unconed's comment() function... don't know why. I global'd it, now it works. You shouldn't see any more indexes or extra post forms when previewing in Unconed.

: This is more of a question than a definite to-do...
: but right now we've got three forums. We started out with
: just the one. When the first news about Phoenix started to
: trickle out, we re-started FutureMyth, for discussion of
: that and, later, Myth 3. We had lots of requests for a spam
: forum, but didn't have any way of adding one in the interim
: between when Ferrex left the site to work for Bungie Studios
: and now. But for a site that's always been about Bungie in
: general with an emphasis on Halo, there's no Halo specific
: forum. Should we have one? Or should we add an item to the
: community forum that lets posters specify a topic, like we
: do with news stories?

Hrm. With Myth III about to be released -- making "futuremyth" a nonsensical topic for now -- and Halo about to be released, at least for the Xbox, it does seem like some forum renoberation would be in order. I dunno what would be best, really, but at first think it looks like you could go in one of two general directions.

1) Three forums: Myth, Halo, and Community. Loosen the standards on Community to let people romp around in there, and try to keep the other two safe for game-related chitchat. A fairly easy solution to implement, has the drawback of splitting up traffic and one or more of the forums may drop below "self-sustaining" traffic levels.

2) One big Bungie-stuff forum, perhaps with the ability to mark and filter for content. Harder to implement, the filtering may be useless unless people are forced to pick a content category when posting, and the natives may get a little too restless at times... but it might be more in the "rampancy spirit" and be less likely to dry up.

It seems that much of the dedicated Halo traffic goes through h.b.o., and the dedicated Myth traffic through MWA and MV these days, with the rampancy crowd feeling like a more eclectic crew. If that's really the case then I would lean toward something like #2.

Yes, you found a bug I thought I had fixed in the threading routine.

In the -min options, everything works fine, because the indexes only display subject lines. When you view a message, it shows the body, the current thread, and a reply form.

However, in the -max options, all message bodies display within the index itself; in the list mode, it displays flat (chronologically), in threaded mode it indents and displays in threaded order, newest threads first, newest posts last in the thread.

I had previously built a trap to stop the indexes from displaying in the -max modes (since they're unnecessary and result in the display you describe). But then I appended the post form, and that wrecked it.

It should be fixed now in Rampancy Left; the others will be fixed shortly.

Hmm.. even that site refers to the MSX as a "home computer" rather than a console-- and it shares the Z80 processor used by the Timex-Sinclair, which was also really a home computer... so I don't think it's completely out of bounds to call the Xbox Microsoft's first "console" in the strict usage of the word.

But the Z80 is a widely used processor - it was used to power some of the first arcade games (SPACE INVADERS!)

Certainly no reason why a machine using it can't be classed as a console. And after all, the Xbox is using a P3 (could be wrong, could be really wrong), but it is still called a console. And Macs use G4 processors, which are in wide use on nuclear submarines - and yet they aren't classed as "Macs". Hum.

True, true. What really makes it a console is that it was a general purpose device, for various things like programming in BASIC and whatnot, rather than a single-purpose device for playing games.

Vis a vis the huge interface thread on HBO, that's what distinguishes a PC from a console-- not whether or not something has a keyboard, for instance.

Hmm.. that is a concern. We're already trying to figure out how many forums we should have, and how we might categorize them.

FutureMyth has been pretty light of late, but perhaps the release of Myth 3 will change that.

And of course, Halo is imminent as well.

One option is to have a single forum and the ability to categorize posts-- but that may be complicating the interface overmuch if it is mandatory, and if it isn't, it may not be useful.

I can't tell for sure, but this may be the first OT in the new forum. I thought this was mildly amusing and THIS IS NOT A JOKE... I pulled it directly from the CNN.com website (here's the article). Enjoy!

Here's a complete text of one broadcast:
"Attention Taliban! You are condemned. Did you know that? The instant the terrorists you support took over our planes, you sentenced yourselves to death. The Armed Forces of the United States are here to seek justice for our dead. Highly trained soldiers are coming to shut down once and for all Osama bin Laden's ring of terrorism, and the Taliban that supports them and their actions.

"Our forces are armed with state of the art military equipment. What are you using, obsolete and ineffective weaponry? Our helicopters will rain fire down upon your camps before you detect them on your radar. Our bombs are so accurate we can drop them right through your windows. Our infantry is trained for any climate and terrain on earth. United States soldiers fire with superior marksmanship and are armed with superior weapons.

"You have only one choice ... Surrender now and we will give you a second chance. We will let you live. If you surrender no harm will come to you. When you decide to surrender, approach United States forces with your hands in the air. Sling your weapon across your back muzzle towards the ground. Remove your magazine and expel any rounds. Doing this is your only chance of survival."

Funny, eh?

True-- but perhaps generally better trained. Iraq at least had a regular army, not an assorted bunch of rabble trained by an exiled weekend warrior.

Exactly true. Although the former has to be emphasized over the latter, I'd have to say, at least at first.

Nope... in Iraq we were in the open desert. The FEBA moved so quickly that when they refused to give up, dozer-tanks would simply bury trenched infantry alive and move on.

The Iraqis were better organized to a limited extent. What makes their Republican Guard so special is that those troops actually went through some form of basic training. The rest included old men or boys, for which the Iraqi government promised a certain amount of money to their families. The fact that Iraq provided such poor logistical support to its troops meant they were ready when we got there. 'S why we had three hundred-some enemy troops surrender to a CNN camera crew. ;-)

The Afghans, on the other hand, are more accustomed to guerilla warfare against a superior force by now. Their troops are, on the average, more self-sufficient. They are tough, they are used to living (and fighting) in those conditions, they know the territory well (and every hidey-hole they ever found or built) and are completely ruthless. They will skin people alive, literally. But they are tactically and strategically unsophisticated, and the few non-handheld weapons they own are mostly acquired from ancient Soviet manufacture. Mostly captured stuff.

This will be a mobile war for our infantry, and we'll use them like a scalpel... where needed, using helicopters and similar equipment. I think that mechanized infantry and armored cav (tanks) will play a relatively minor role in this war, compared to Operation Desert Storm.

The US is beginning to move away from behemoth tanks anyway... they are nearly unstoppable in the open, but much more limited in certain ways. Most especially in the roads and bridges they can manage to use, since each Abrams is roughly equivalent to the weight of 32 Chevy Suburbans. (Though there aren't many of either in Afghanistan) We'll be going to smaller, lighter, faster hardware.

The way to find bin Laden will be to get human intelligence (HUMINT)... gather information from troops we capture and track him in a more Carmen Sandiego fashion. I'm a little concerned that he could already be well out of the country by now... perhaps in Indonesia or some other nation. And that the Taliban is just lying to us again.

... and it's designed to scare the living hell out of them. Or at least make them doubt. Doubt their cause. Doubt what they're fighting for.

It's the two-handed approach... Food, survival and assistance in one hand. Inescapable and fiery destruction in the other.

I'm not surprised. I'm just surprised this is the first time that any of this has become significant public knowledge.

Harry has posted over in Halo.bungie.org forum about the possibility of connections between the Marathon series and Halo-- basically to the effect that most of them are minor, and that we won't be seeing Pfhor on the Halo.

Below is a short quote and my response:

: Lastly, I feel that somehow we won't see any Pfhor, or Jjaro (it would be
: cool if they built the Halo but oh well). We won't see anything relating
: to the S'pht or their 11 clans. All I think we'll see is how the humans
: are under the Marathon logo.

Hmmm... I wouldn't give up on that first one just yet-- at least as far as the Jjaro are concerned.

I think that by and large you are right-- the connections are fairly general, almost coincidental in nature-- more a result of an artist making a little inside joke with past material, than a conscious effort to create a sequel.

On the other hand... PiD and Marathon were tied pretty closely together, even if only on one point... that point being the Jjaro.

And the involvement of the Jjaro might sweep away most, if not all, of the timeline discrepancies noted.

Still, I'm sure there's an awful lot about Halo's story we don't know yet, and the best part about playing the game will be finding it out.

Happened twice now, so it can't just be the DNS migration or assorted other network stuff ;P

I find that now I not only have to log into the main page when I come here, but also to the forums themselves... So I hit rampancy.net, log in, go to the community forum, then log in again... It's not like having to log in every time I hit my back button, but it's a little excessive I'm thinking. Anyone else having this problem?

And I thought the cookies had a life of one week... maybe they just got moldy.

my problem is is that I keep crshing when hitting the "community forum" link after loging in. I had HL and interarchy also open, but only IE crashed, and I ws able to force quit out of it without trouble.

I got here by clicking directly on the post from the main page. dare I try and go to forum index?
(I guess if I hit post it'll do it for me eh?)

It's a vast conspiracy to block all LotR traffic from reaching the internet, spearheaded by certain people who can't read about tea parties and such. Or something.

Hopefully Narc will get his army of monkeys on the case :D

One last note-- we've updated the few "hard" links on the site that pointed to the beta address so that they now use the proper address. But if you login with one address and then hit a link for another, you may be logged out. This should only happen during the period while the DNS is transitioning

Not sure why Earendil is freezing though.

Strange things... when I clicked that link, it logged me out, but when I deleted the "www." I was logged back in. So I don't think it's just the DNS stuff.

Although on that note, typing just "http://rampancy.net" into my browser bring up "http://synfibers.com/rampancy/index.php" and I'm not logged into that either; it just seems to keep me logged in to the forums when they're off rampancy.net but never when they have the "www" before it.

Hope that helps with the bug-fixing :D

Yep-- I just posted about it elsewhere in the thread, but you hit the nail right on the head.

The hard links to the forum in the "forums" box, as well as the items in the "features" box, are linked to:

http:://rampancy.net/path/to/item"

If you've using www.rampancy.net, then it'll log you out.

I'm going to fix this shortly by changing those hard links to PHP_SELF, which means it'll use whatever host name you used when you logged in, and therefore won't break the login cookie.

Hey, Narc, the title post in a thread is still not appearing when viewed, although you seem to have fixed the doodad (no link, bold text) for the others. Is this intentional?

Nope, not intentional-- just not nearly as important as lots of other things, especially seeing as the bug only appears when you're looking at the body text of the missing post (in other words, it's not really missing, it's just not listed in the thread. Once you get past the first message in the thread, it comes back.

It is on the list of things to fix or add-- there's just lots more stuff ahead of it that's either more serious, or just cooler.

I'll shortly be moving my progress updates about the site into my very own Blog™ so that the forums can (hopefully) move on to discussion about things OTHER than the site design-- also, that way, it'll be easier to follow the progression of what bugs I've noted and are being fixed, and which ones are new.
