Halo 3: Lies, Damned Lies, And Release Dates

Gamestop says Halo 3 is due out June 1, 2006. This is pure speculation on their part, as the game hasn't even been announced beyond Bill Gates remark at E3, which seems more inaccurate for each day Bungie is silent on their new project. Thanks Kotaku.

I would find this date HIGHLY unlikely considering that: not only has Bungie has made no formal announcement of their new project, the time from Halo 1 to Halo 2 was almost 3 years, that the xbox 360 is an entirely new device that would have to be encoded and programmed in an entirely new way than either game Bungie has made to date, the amount of time Bungie has been spending just to make 9 more maps, plus the time spent on the overhaul of the LIVE system to include the new maps, the work on bug fixes, and the entire company is planning on moving to an entire new building later this year would set back any project in development now a month (or two). Have I missed anything?

the simple fact of the matter is bungie lies, they lied all though h2's development, and they lied once its released. so many annouced details never made it again, and the entire advertising campaign for halo 2 is a lie, its for the halo 2 that never got released, the so called "Best. Game. Ever" which halo 2 most definatly is not.

Admittedly, the focus of the ad campaign was the first few levels, with gameplay on Earth. That's what Bungie demoed, so they could safely focus on that without giving anything away.

Halo 1's surprise was the Flood. They weren't featured in any screenshots until the game was released (although their existence was leaked just prior).

Likewise, the Arbiter compaign and the existence of another Halo were supposed to be (at least nominally) secrets. So the campaign focused on what everybody already knew was going to happen: Covenant coming to Earth.

Yes, it wasn't a full-fledged invasion as many expected. However, changing the focus of an unreleased product is hardly a lie. That'd be like calling a bestselling author a lie because he removes part of a chapter that was excerpted in a review before the book was published.

Sheesh-- no wonder Bungie isn't saying anything about Halo 3. It's the only way to make sure that people aren't calling them liars afterwards for making the game they wanted to make!

This is the durandumb fella from HBO, right? Perhaps not, but the tone and claims are rather similar. In any case, NO ONE LIED. Stuff was shown that didn't make it into the game... but they told people before release that it didn't make it. All the cut features like sprinting and ATVs and such were announced in October. Games change as they develop; sometimes good ideas at the start prove to be bad ideas (or unworkable ideas, anyway) partway through. Stuff made it into the game that wasn't announced, but you can hardly call that lying. Spilling the beans on the Arbiter sequences would've weakened the emotional power of those scenes... part of the impact came from being SURPRISED. So of course they didn't advertise it. A whole bunch of people built stories in their heads around what was coming, based upon the press releases and Weekly Updates... which, of course, were missing the items withheld for plot reasons and included (due to sloppy research) that which was dropped for gameplay reasons. Nobody lied to these people. These people lied to themselves, and should get over it. -- Steve's wondering if the wisest policy might be to stay completely dark until a month before release. But where's the fun in that?

And doesn't it appear that this is exactly what Bungie is doing-- staying mum about what they are even working on, even when Microsoft's chairman is blabbing away about Halo 3 at E3?

That's kinda what sparked the tagline. Let me say that I would be REALLY UPSET with the immature whiners if Bungie (understandably) adopts this... I REALLY ENJOYED the weekly updates, and will miss them if they are indeed gone. They were brief glimpses inside the industry that few outside of the industry can get. Cynical marketing ploy? Perhaps, but I enjoyed them anyway. -- Steve's life would go on, however, without relentless and endless sniveling about their absence.* * cheap shot captioned for the "between the lines" impaired.

How stupid do you think people are?

That rumor wasn't funny the first time people made it up-- when the date was supposed to be February 8, 2005.

There is no date displayed when you finish Halo 2 on Legendary. I've finished the game myself and seen the credits. Bungie itself busted this rumor six months ago.
