Frankie has posted at Bungie.net that Best Buy may be your best friend come Halo 3's launch day:
During the launch period of Halo 3, the 25th, 26th and 27th of September, Best Buy will be sponsoring the Xbox Live Gold service and making it free for everyone. Think of it as Halo Free Gold Days. That means that even if you only have Xbox Live Silver, or you picked up a 360 just for Halo 3, that you’ll be able to try almost all of the features – online co-op, Multiplayer, Forge editing, viewing networked Saved Films - however, you will not be able to use our File Share system unless you subscribe to the paid Xbox Live Gold service.
Interesting restriction. Looks like nobody wants a lack of a Gold subscription to get in the way of Halo 3's online multiplayer numbers.

Re: Xbox Live Gold Free At Best Buy
It surprises me that xbox live needed someone to sponsor this. It seems like they stand to make as much from people that decide they need the service thanks to the free trial, its a wonder that they don't do something like this more often.

Re: Xbox Live Gold Free At Best Buy
In reply to: Re: Xbox Live Gold Free At Best BuyDoesn't surprise me. MS is clearly positioning XBL as a legitimate value-added service that makes an independent profit; not just something used to move more consoles and more games.
Free trials, sure. But a whole free year? That's something else. A retailer is an obvious choice for this because the retail markup on XBL may be pretty low, and they need a way to grab as many of those massive Halo 3 sales that are going to be out there. This deal gives Best Buy a way of differentiating themselves.
Rampant for over se7en years.
