The image appeared on Halo2.com; at the time, it was speculated that this was an orbiting space station of human, rather than Covenant or Forerunner design.

In the released game, the Malta is a station similar to the Cairo that has a MAC gun and is part of Earth's orbital defenses.

A version of this obviously capable of atmospheric flight appears on the commercial as 3 pelicans take off from it.

This thing is not the same thing that launches the 3 pelicans. Take another look (download and pause). The ship you are refering to is another cruiser or whatever, similar to the pillar of autumn (though of different design). This thing, the spoke as we like to call it, is 't' shaped and looks like it would have difficulty maintainging altitude that close to Earths surface. It is fricken huge after all.

Whatever the case, the two ships do not look the same, and so I am of the opinion that they are therefore not the same.

This is most likely one of the MAC platforms from the books.

" Others have speculated that it is a space elevator, and that the structure seen protruding below actually reaches all the way to the Earth's surface (meaning the Chief need not have jumped.)"

They object in the commercials and this object are different, look at the making of trailer and this appears on the monitor behind Joe Straten IN ORBIT around the Earth.

"It might be the installation that Cortana refers to as "the spoke", "

I'm in the UK so I don't know if this is common anywhere else but the Comment "on the Spoke" is simply a figure of speech mentioning imminent arrival.

In reply to: MAC

Cortana says reinforcements are on the scope, which is a common term in the US, at least in the military. Scope refers to the radar or sonor, or what ever method is being used for detection. Regardless, on the scope is a figure of speach and is commonly used to say exectly what MAC said, "imminent arrival". I really dont think Cortana was telling the Admiral that reinforcements were currently on the "spoke" as he probably would have replied "Cortana, with all due respect, what the hell is the spoke?".

Word.

Thanks for the clarification-- that quote makes a lot more sense now :)

...the MAC gun. I have heard that you must defend it, although I am not sure.

That would make sense.

I thought Earth had no MAC guns though?

Have to reread the books once more before the 9th...

this ship is not the one master chief jumps from. Watch the movie closely again, do u recognise the corridor that he picks up the battle rifle from? he escaped of the pillar of autumn in the last level of halo 1! I speculate he rides it all the way to earth before dismouting in this spectacular fashion. As for the thing above, it is no way big enough to be portruding from earth!

cool

It's spelled "Malta" not "multa", nad it is one of three massive orbital MAC cannons in earth orbit, the "Malta", the "Athens", and another one. You have to defend it in the first human level. Jeez, haven't you guys played it yet?

Actually, it's Cairo Station. It's the one the Master Chief is on at the start of the game. Others mentioned include the Malta and the Athens; they're all named after cities.
