Halo seems, to me anyway, like one big, protracted Thermopylae--but with humans and aliens instead of Greeks and Persians. If Bungie sticks with this metaphor, then it's entirely plausible that every single Spartan will die, just like in the actual battle of Thermopylae.
Yes, I heard the rumor, but I think that's all it is: a rumor. If Bungie killed off the Chief, there would be a HUGE backlash from very ticked-off fans. Though there may be some ineresting, Marathon-esque plot quirks that we will have to deal with.
Personally, I'm guesing the Chief will go back into Cryo. It brings the story full circle and is the perfect picture: Earth's greates hero returning to slumber, until he is once more awakened in time of crisis.
Artistic integrity means you do what the story requires, not what the audience requires. Part of the nature of tragic heroes is that they sacrifice themselves for their victory.
It would also nicely serve to divide Bungie's own Halo trilogy, as the story of the Master Chief and the Flood, from whatever other Halo-universe games are produced by Ensemble and Wingnut.
Being entertained doesn't always mean being happy. If Bungie kills the Chief off and fans are affected enough by it to be angry, I'd say: mission accomplished. If they're affected enough to cry, that's a bonus.

Yes heroes sacrifice them selfs for victory bt I also heard he dies trying to save Cortana beacause she learned the key to victory from the grave mind and chiefs objective is to bring her back to where ever the remaining humans are so in a way yeah chief would sacrifice him self for victory.

Of course, Bungie can always surprise us...
