As many of you know Halo was a huge sucess, and I feel that the main reason for it, besides the many ways to kill someone, was the story and its characters. I mean who doesn't like watching those interludes and such. Myself having read the books behind the series can see the many shortcomings in the game, would of loved to have seen the Battle for the Butte as described in the book by the Helljumpers but anyway back to the point.

In Halo 2 as we have all seen; the Covenant are on Earth and so is the Master Chief. Sounds like a great time right, well this is where I am concerned, what gave Halo all of its depth will not be there in Halo 2. Eric Nylund (the author of the series), recently released the next book in the series, First Strike. In it he details that the Covenant do in fact know the location of Earth and are moving to strike it with about 500 assault class cruisers, but they are stopped thanks to the heroific efforts of the Master Chief and his SPARTAN team. I am not sure of all the details yet, but it does seem that Microsoft plans to continue to the story with a single Spartan, when in fact three survive from Reach, they are resecued by the heroic commander.

I do hope and pray that Microsoft is working closlely with the author of the series and that he has given them some insight into where he is taking Halo, if not there is a possibility that Halo 2 will not live up to Halo in terms of story, in terms of Multiplayer I cant wait to get my hands on it. A lack of story will hardly take away from what makes Multiplayer so good, but being able to kill people many different ways wont win in the "shock and awe" its predecessor earned and we all want Halo to say popular so as to see the conclusion of the novels as well as maybe seeing Microsoft following the first book in the series (THe Fall of Reach) that allows us to experience Spartan Training, until then I will continue to scour the internet for up dates to this post.

I seriously doubt they gave Nylund an empty book and told him to write stuff about Halo. Bungie was obviously collaberating with him, as with Fall of Reach. I have read all 3 novels too, and just because the Halo 2 movies only show Master Cheif doesn't mean he's the only SPARTAN. The game doesn't even have a concrete release date, for crying out loud! If there were a week to release and no news of the other SPARTANS, I could understand this rant. But not much news is even out yet, and the story is the LAST thing Bungie is going to want to leak out to the greedy public.

In reply to: . . . . . .

Both Halo novel authors-- William Dietz and Eric Nylund-- had access to the so-called "Halo Bible" authored by those at Bungie, including Eric Trautmann and Brannon Boren.

Rest assured that while the novels may depart from the plot of the game in some minor respects, depicting characters and events that do not directly appear, the content of the novels are official and don't, generally speaking, conflict with the game(s).

so wait maybe I am mistaken, I thought the game was based on the books, or is it the other way around?

In reply to: so wait maybe I am mistaken,

Bungie developed and wrote the storyline for Halo in-house. The books came afterwards. Keep in mind that Halo was in development dating back to 1999. Bungie was inspired by multiple books in regards to the development of the Halo storyline, so it is not without its own references as well.

When asked to speculate on the plot of Halo 2, in terms of where the story will go, and how good it will be, I generally use Bungie's previous Marathon trilogy as a template.

The plot of the first Marathon game, while intriguing, was fairly standard. It took off in the second game, becoming deeper, more complex, and more interesting.

It fairly went off the wall in the third installment, to the delight of some and the surprise and dismay of others.

I'm fairly confident that there will be story elements in Halo 2 that put the original game, as good as it was, to shame in this department.

In reply to: Halo 2 plot

(jfarrell responding)In terms of story, I loved Halo, in fact due to the fact I started playing with a pirated version on PC before playing XBox I got really interested in the story, so much so that I went out and bought the books and read the, albeit to see if I could find some tactics Bungie may have implemented in the game as part of the story (Eric Nylund describes the Master Chief killing elites with a burst of five shots from the Assault rifle from medium range, maybe 5 clips in the game LOL).

I really do think Halo 2 will be better, I just want to most of all point out this minor detail, I have been following Halo 2s development and based on the time and money going into it, I think it is very safe to say it will be a game that will once again vault XBox to the top of the console world, I wanna give it a try on PC as well.

although details in the books are very different from the game I belive that is to make it more realistic. I mean who would want to read about emptying 5 clips into an elite.I wonder if another book will be published before the halo2release date this fall.I the brutes are easier to kill and I would like to get my hands on a profet. I would also like to see what Dr.Halsey and Linda are up to.

Well you have got to think about it like this, Halo was basic, yet complicated. It stayed to the storyline and that is it. Halo 2 it seems they are trying to do to much. Adding to many things. In my opinion it is not better but that is me. On a final note Halo 2 will be more fun but halo 1 will still be the game with the most impact ever

In the books it details at least three SPARTANs are still alive after Reach, Halo, and then the First Strike against the Covenant, think there is any chance well see Master Chief working with other Spartans (no I don't mean the ODSTs in the Trailer that are wearing the pseudo Spartan Armor), I think it would be cool to see a team of Spartans running around supporting you, but that is just me :)

I have a feeling the other SPARTANS will be in HALO2 but they'll be really strong computers like the marines and will probably appear in later levels. We just haven't seen much in the E3 demo. However it is possible where book "First Strike" leaves off before they get anywhere near earth the SPARTANS go on another mission in covenant ships and die. Now for Kelly and Dr. Halsey, I have no ideas whatsoever eccept that they die from starvation as they cannot jump through slipspace. Nnow the brutes in the E3 video look too easy. In the book Masterchief has such a tough time with one brute but in the demo the cheif kills them in about 3-5 shots. The flood are probably playing dead in Johnson and are dorment. 343 guilty spark survives Halo's explosion and probably goes after Dr. Halsey or hitches a ride close to the Ascendent Justice/something and goes to earth. I think he awakens the flood on purpose to get back at the humans. I gtg now. I'll return some other time and post more.

quote of myself from another thread:

"I think that they may have more Spartans in halo 2... Eric Nylund left us with so many loose ends, like how Dr. Halsey took Kelly on that ship, and that Colonal Ackerson or whatever his name was (the guy who was supposed to be Halsey's predecesser or whatever) had a "backup plan".

And, when Dr. Halsey was in that guys's computer, she came across two files. One was Titled "s-III". John and the others were a part of the "SPARTAN-II" program. Could this be the SPARTAN-III program? The other file was entitled "cmdez", or something simmilar. Hmm... Chief Mandez, maybe? This one i'm not too sure about, but for all of the people who have read the novels, just think about it.

I may sound like a rambling conspiricy theorist, but all of these things would be interesting to see in the new Halo. "
