I few days ago while sitting in the lunch room at work I was reading a theory I got from HBO that I printed off the net a few years back, this was about the time when halo 2 about five months from coming out in stores.

I remember reading a very interest paragraph about how the flood can become more than just there indiviual state whether it is ranger, combat or carrier. Then at sometime I thought about the gravemind and how small it could have started out to the size it has become in halo 3. I gave some more thought and I began to wonder where did the flood originate from because it's not possible for something that complex to form in our space and time, unless it has been created by something or someone else.

At I'm first thinking maybe forerunners but then again keep in mind there was something on halo3.com a few weeks before halo 3 release that mention something about the flood being extradimesional in origin. That the forerunners merely encountered the flood on some unknown planet that never existed before and that it spoke to the forerunners in vocal and in the mind.

So msybe the flood are some form of entity that after awhile it can be a god form like the gravemind. I remember in some missions in halo 3 like the floodgate where a covenant destroyer lands just near the ark is infected and you have to get aboard, blow the engine core. You get inside the infected ship then the gravemind begins talking to you not through normal vocal conversation but through your mind.

If you got better idea's I would sure like feedback or would like to add on to this theory the door is open.

Have awesome day and drive safe
Done Great, isnt it:)
Anyhow, if the flood were on a planet then they couldn't have just appeared to the forerunners, as they would have been contained, and even if the couldn't be contained, after being able to put a huge installation (the Ark) out of the galaxy they would have just ran away and set up home somewhere else. I think the last time the halos were activated they were done in desperation, if there such a big shield around the ark the forerunners would have survived and still been around when the flood were gone. the first halo we encountered was the final resting place of the flood so i think that must have been where the old gravemind (in the time of the forerunners) existed when halo was activated. When halo killed all the forerunners, the gravemind would have known he didn't have the calcium reserves to maintain a huge army of flood, so he would have broken down the army and himself into resources for him to survive on till he was released from the weapons cache the forerunners had trapped him in. This means to offset the huge losses the flood would have had initially for facing a race like the forerunners, they would have probably had to clear out another galaxy's calcium supply and then move to what they thought was the nearest source of food.(have you seen how easily and quickly sentinels are made, and how they used to eat the flood back in halo 1 when the flood was in its first stage) They would have been at their highest stage and would have posed a large threat to the forerunners (which, by the way i think are humans)
