I know that in the level Two Betrayals, Cortana takes the Index and disposes of it in an unknown way, but is it still out there and could it have a role in future Halo games? Who knows what kind of power and knowledge it holds and what affect it can have on the human race if we still have it.

The index was like a custom key. When the door is destroyed for it to word on another door the door lock needs to be rebuilt around the key

For one, after the MC plugs it into the panel in the Control Room, Cortana appears to be holding it. But she's only a hologram.
Secondly, when the MC recovers it from the Library, 343GS also says he needs to carry it, and it promptly seems to disappear.
It occurs to me that the Index itself is just a piece of data, being carried by various computer systems and represented (perhaps even holographically) as that green rod.
One might guess that Cortana still retains whatever information was in "the Index".
