The prophets are the leaders of the covenant.
The elites, grunts,jackals, and hunters aren't a part of the same alien race. The first 2 races of the covenant(religous treaty)were the Elites and the prophets. The elites are the military right hand, and the prophets are the politocal, religous and spiritual leadership, together they formed the covenant and recruited other races around them.

Yup. That was in EGM.
As far as Elites, Grunts, Jackals and Hunters, it's long been known that the Covenant was a coalition of five separate races. I don't know anybody who ever thought that Elites and Grunts were the same race.
What no one had seen before EGM was what the fifth race was or what they looked like. (This also begs the question about Engineers... because if they are also a race, then the total is six... or two of the other five are actually different members of the same race (different sexes, perhaps? Who knows).
Most of what you say is, in fact, fact... but most people already know since they've read the same material you have (FoR, EGM).
Although whether the Prophets actually assembled the Covenant or whether they just ended up as the leaders (by choice or nature) is never actually stated anywhere. But it's a solid conjecture.
