mod

HaloMods let us know they've opened a Halo server at 204.251.80.250. Currently it's running the Banshee Wars mod we wrote about earlier.

In addition, version 2.0 of the Halo map editor, SparkEdit, has now gone into testing, with support for PC Halo maps as well as other improvements. Thanks Grenadiac.

OK, normally we don't go around willy-nilly pointing at people's petitions. But this one is politely worded, and is a reasonable, and I would imagine not too onerous, feature to request. Gary Williams has put up a request to add a logging feature to the Halo Dedicated Server and the PC Halo client, to aid in creating statistical analyses for player ratings and ladders, as well as other things. If you think it's worthwhile, why not take a look.

HaloMods sends word of an Xbox Halo mod called Banshee Wars by Iron Forge; the original Banshee has been turned into a bomber, and a second type of Banshee, a Jet, has been added. Several weapons have been modified to fire homing projectiles.

Blue's News is reporting that Epic Games has announced Unreal University, where modmakers will get training on the Unreal Engine. Hey, Bungie, you going to let Epic steal all the mindshare in the modmaker education business? Where's Halo University? Sheesh, the sales of sweatshirts and bumper stickers to alumni alone would be a gold mine.

Grenadiac and SourceGuy mentioned in the HBO forum that the next version of their Halo editor, SparkEdit, should be out soon, featuring source and destination editing for teleporters, weapon and powerup spawn point editing, rally waypoint editing, and many other new features.

Tycho at Marathon Resurrection, which is a Marathon TC for Unreal Tournament being made by Team Unpfhorgiven, has put up a new poll asking users if they want M:R to have completely polished single and multiplayer play before release, or if the team should kick the mod out the door now. At the moment, this is the state of play:

Well, somebody has to be first, so this is it. A site called HaloBunker.net has a modified version of Blood Gulch, with some weapon and vehicle modifications (namely, the LAAG fires rockets) as well as some movies of the modded map in action. Thanks Louis Wu at HBO.

Halomods.com, the site that is home to the only currently-released (although unofficial) Halo map editing tool, Sparkedit, is running a poll on what new features users would like to see in the next version. Head over and vote if you're planning on editing Halo maps.

The Silent Cartographers, a PC Halo mapmaking group, have got their website up now. They have 14 members and list several projects on their project page, including four new maps, one called "Aquaphobia", a clear reference to similarly named levels in Bungie games, such as Phforaphobia in Marathon and Gephyrophobia in PC Halo.

Two mapmaking-related updates from Subnova lately.

The first is the formation of a PC Halo Mapmaking group called The Silent Cartographers. They intend to make maps, weapons and vehicles for Halo PC, and unlike most other mapmaking groups, they are not recruiting new members.

The current plan is to have the Halo PC Editing Kit or at least the initial phase of the kit released very soon after Halo PC appears on store shelves.

Be sure to check it out if you're planning on trying your hand at making Halo maps, or if you're just curious. Or bored. Or whatever.
