how can i install myth2 on my win2k machine? it sees win2k as winnt and insists that i must have sp3 installed so my directx will be up to date. of course win2k is fine as far as directx goes, but the installer quits.

Looking through the referer logs for R.net today this interesting item came up:

http://flawless.bungie.net/perlbin/blam.pl?file=/site/2/databases/view_d...

Trying to access flawless.bungie.net results in an authentication request.

The blam.pl script is the same name currently being used at seventhcolumn.org.

"Flawless" might be a reference to Case (Jaime Griesemer) who uses the alias "Flawless Cowboy".

Not only does it have some very nice screenshots, but has been mentioned very favourably on slashdot... which likely means that if you want to read the review, better either act fast or wait for a couple days...

A lot of the comments were a damn sight better than the bulk of forums tend to be, but there was the usual anti-MS diatribe and expressions of disillusionment that seem to haunt a lot of the forums that casually mention Halo and/or Bungie.

Of interest is the amount of bungiefen on that board, the majority of whom seem to go back to at least Marathon.

An interesting read, at least in parts.

I'm ready to dive in :-)

my questions is: where?
I'd rather not go for the bundles, I just want halo atm.
but I am unable to find a place where I can preorder *just* the xBox. anyone have any ideas (online or at a store) ?

and can anyone think of an advantage to *not* preordering the xBox, or getting right away? expected price drop (doubtful) ect ect ?

ok one last question.... I swear :-)
I'm seeing a couple different cables that come as a side option.....does anyone know if the xBox comes with the required cables to hook up with a standard TV/VCR ? or do I need to order these cables too?

Thanks,

You can't preorder without getting a bundle. That's pretty
much a given. The Marketing geniuses™ have made
sure of that. If you really want one, you're probably better
off hitting your local CrapUSA or somewhere early on launch
day and grabbing one.

It does, (at least mine did) but there are "upgrades" you can get
that let you plug it in via svideo and I think, VGA. (Action figures
sold seperately, guns do not actually fire.)

Generally speaking:

RCA video S-Video RGB (VGA)

RGB video signals come in analog and digital flavors, and digital is generally superior. However, it is my understanding that at least right now the Xbox doesn't support any sort of VGA output.

S-Video output is similar to RCA video output; the major difference is separate luminance (brightness) and chrominance (color) signals.

Years ago (now THAT seems funny) I tried to scale the Ring dimensions using the Ring hologram from the MWNY 99 movie. The diameter of 10,000 units (now known as kilometers) was a given.

I arrived at a Ring width about 640 kilometers wide and about 160 kilometers thick (about 80 for the structure and 80 for the atmosphere and airdams).

Spoiler, sort of:

Since "...the Fall of Reach", via Cortana, tells us that the Ring is 22 point 3 kilometers thick (I will assume that this is at the structure center, which still allows airdams and atmosphere to be at least another 22.3 kilometers thick), this would then mean that my guestimates were about 4 times too large. If so, this could mean that the Ring width is about 160 kilometers, rather than the 640 that I had originally guessed.

This adjusted figure still implies a lot of room to explore and fight in.

Many years ago a game was announced by a small game company named Bungie, the game? Halo.

I've never have the privilege of following a game from beginning to end. but now I can say, having been through it all, it was worth my time.

We had the good times, we had the bad times, but we made it through it all, Thanks again to all those that stuck around and shared their thoughts on even the most abstract details of Halo. one does wonder how many pounds of crack we went through ;-)

Kudos to all the web masters out there that made this community possible, and all the people that donated servers to the cause. and to all those that, when the web masters gotten taken away from us, stood up and took there place.

Now we enter a new phase of the journey, one very different from the last, and I'm not so sure will be as fun, least not as entertaining ;-)

Until next time!

Now if only Bungie would set up some localized fan fests for everyone. ;-)

First I would like to say I enjoyed the book a lot. I got it on Thursday, and begna reading Thusday night. I finished it on Saturday at about 12:20 in the afternoon.

One of the things I liked the most was, it gave you an idea of how big of a hole the humans are in. Not only do the Covenant seems to outnumber them on the ground, the Covenant can outnumber the humans in spave when they feel like, although they don't usually. Plus, the covenant weapons kick ass, although the human MAC guns are quite effective and kick some decent ass.

Another thing is the aliens. Seeing screenshots doesn't do them justice. Once you read this book you get a feel for the personalities of the aliens themselves. Especially the caste system. I sure hope the caste system is evident in the game. I would rather enjoy watching one of the giant Hunters, trample a Jackal that doesn't get out of its way.

All and all, this was a great book, and gives you a lot of info on the halo universe. Especially when it mentions the PoA being a Halycon class cruiser, 1/3 the size of Marathon class cruisers. (Possible link)

The one beef I had was that in the final battle for Reach, the PoA is badly damaged when it jumps into Slipspace. But I've watched the first 40 secs of the intro movie, and the PoA doesn't appear to have any damage.

aye, but the humans have held out for many years, losing, but it seems like I had the impression that when the PoA jetted out, that the war had been going on for 20-30 years. though I'll have to go back and do the math.

Well I had a great amount of fun seeing little Marathon and Bungie references in the book, and I have some some written down with page numbers... (woot!)

p. 23 - The kids play "king of the hill"
p. 39 - The students watch the battle of Marathon play out
p. 70 - The MJOLNIR (pronounced "myole-nir" FYI) history including a bit about how the old units had to power up often, that coupled with the "hey it's a Mark V!" quotes by the marines in the Halo reviews I've read sounds very interesting.
p. 71 - Capture the flag excercise. Not a real link, but fun.
p. 235 - A reference how smart AIs loose control after 7 years. Rampancy ayone?
p 238 - A marathon class ship

Not everyone.

p. 336 - Last paragraph:

Cortana had plenty of time to think on the journey. Most of the crew were frozen in cryo for the trip. Some of the engineers had elected to try to repair the main reactor. A futile gesture ... but she lent them a few cycles to try to rebuild the convection inductor.

and...

p. 337 - Second to last paragraph:

"Hull breaches patched -- but the majority of decks eleven, twelve and thirteen are destroyed -- that includes the Spartan's weapons locker."

So, a few some repairs have taken place. The hull probably hasn't been repaired to original luster, but we never see it as such anyways. =P

Just a quote or two to clear this up:

p336 "Most of the crew were frozen in cryo for the trip. Some of the engi-neers had elected to try to repair the main reactor. A futile gesture... but she lent them a few cycles to try to rebuild the convection inductor."

p337 "Hull breaches patched--but the majority of decks eleven, twelve, and thirteen are destroyed--..."

So from the outside the ship while dirty wouldn't have any holes in it and on the inside nobody would be on the damaged decks.
