July 26, , Old news by now, but a couple of weeks ago, Marathon: Durandal was announced for the Xbox 360! Read more about it here . (posted 6:23 by D-M.A.)

August 9, , Scenario News reports that a new scenario, "Los Disney", has been released! (posted 14:29 by D-M.A.)

August 11, Somewhere in the heavens..., This came in last week... but things got out of hand. RuGGeR (yeah, that RuGGeR - one of the founding members of bungie.org) put together a Marathon-based makeover for your iPhone . 3.1 mb, chock-full of goodies: ringtones, system sounds, carrier logo replacement, desktop images and links. Grab it - and Marathonize your phone!(posted 9:15 by Claude)

One Bungie fan expressed disappointment (and hope) with true eloquence. Give it a read. It's a bright spot in an otherwise dreary morning for friends of Bungie.(Louis Wu 13:57:00 +0000)

game:

Joystiq spoke to Phil Spencer, general manager of Microsoft Game Studios - Spencer answered a question about the lack of a Bungie announcement at E3 with a description of what WAS focused on (first-party games aimed for a holiday release this year). That suggests that Bungie's announcement was postponed because 1) they're no longer a first-party studio, and/or 2) their material is not ready for release this year.

game:

Ah, the heady days of the early and mid 90s, when Bungie was an independent developer and publisher, master of its own destiny. They developed what they wanted to develop, announced when they wanted to announced, and shipped... well, when the boxes were done.

Those days must seem so simple compared to now.

Because what's going on now is apparently a Bungie announcement scheduled for E3 today-- one likely related to Halo in some way-- has been postponed indefinitely by Bungie's publisher.

That would be Microsoft, for those of you keeping score at home, even though the name "Microsoft" does not appear anywhere in the carefully-worded missive from Bungie president Harold Ryan.

Most fans, of course, don't care what happened or who is at fault. They just knew they were supposed to be seeing something exciting and new within the next twelve hours, and now they won't. For a form of popular entertainment whose fans vacillate back and forth between endurance trials of development waits-- three years for each of the last three Halo games-- and the instant gratification of online multiplayer matches where average lifetimes can be well under thirty seconds, such an indefinite delay is a great disappointment. Even if we don't know what it was we were supposed to be expecting.

So what were we expecting, when can we expect it, and why was it delayed just twelve hours before it was to hit?

A bit more on the surprise cancellation: Kotaku has a short item that ties the situation to a "high level executive". There are plenty of forum posters out there willing to speculate who that might be. (On the off chance that the Kotaku piece is pulled, here's a screenshot.)(Louis Wu 04:35:04 +0000)

Just moments ago the countdown on Bungie.net, which had about 12 hours left to go until some cryptic announcement, changed to an apology from studio president Harold Ryan that reads:

For the last several months, we've been building towards a reveal of something exciting that Bungie's working on. We were looking forward to sharing that with our fan community during the week of E3. However, those plans were just changed by our publisher.

It's a sad, sad day for Bungie fans - swing by Bungie.net for full details. The short version: the announcement many have been waiting for eagerly - a new game, new Halo content, whatever it was going to be - is not going to happen tomorrow. Plans have been changed - no new date is announced.

...is apparently how long humanity fought the Covenant over Harvest. It is not, gratefully, the amount of time you'll have to wait for Halo Wars from Ensemble Studios to come out, since supposedly the game is now set for a release sometime in Spring 2009.

So, a little less than one... long... year.

The rumor mill is working overtime as this year's scaled-down E3 approaches.

The latest comes from "sources" who are reporting to GameSpot's Rumor Control column that Bungie will announce a new, "grittier" Halo universe game: a squad-based shooter that follows a group of ODSTs and doesn't feature the series' iconic Spartan warrior, the Master Chief.

GameSpot's rumor control columnist is calling this rumor "certainly not bogus". Let's wait and find out.

Alright, let me start of by saying that if you are on insane, you are screwed. Go home. If you are already at home, leave. This level scared me away from the game (and these walkthroughs) for a long time, but now I am back to save those of you stalling here. My apologies, but I wasn’t doing much better. I made it through the level in a couple of hours while writing this guide, so it should be doable. Good luck, and thanks to hawk for inspiring me to go back and face my fears.

This was an attempt I was making in my Banshee days (towards the end) to formulate a protocol for two-man Banshee wing voice communications. Prior to this the only way to coordinate in a wing was by feel and by occasional quick text codes, but this lacked versatility; when they released Ventrilo for Mac I was excited and set out to codify a protocol for this. Voice is fast enough for on-the-fly coordination, but only if you both have agreed on a stripped-down, unambiguous code for communicating tactical requests and data.

In any case, I banged this around a little and did a bit of testing, but it never got finished and I was fading out on HPC by this point. So it just sat around.

All I've got is the notes. Thought it might interest someone.

The divide between story and gameplay has been a regular topic of discussion around here, so this Moving Pixels blog entry seems like it might be of interest. Called The Great Divorce, it imagines Plot and Gameplay as a couple undergoing marital strife. Give it a read, great fun.

Just playing around with a few toys. One you might want to try out: collapsible blocks.

Clicking on the title of a block, either one of the three across the top of the page, underneath the header, or in the left or right hand columns, will collapse the block down to just its title.

Collapse all three blocks across the top, and the entire region will collapse, bringing the page content up closer to the top. Blocks should remember their states from page to page (although it may take until the entire page loads before the blocks collapse).

After the discussions about death prompted by my last blog entry, specifically those mentioning the Iron skull, and whether a gamer who dies even once in a level can be said to have accomplished anything, I thought I'd give the skull a serious try in Halo 3 for the first time.

There are some skulls I like playing with, to the extent that I nearly always enable them now when playing campaign, solo or coop: Catch, because more grenades equals more fun, Cowbell, because bigger explosions means bigger fun, Mythic and Thunderstorm, because Heroic with a few tweaks is more tolerable than Legendary, and Fog because it encourages battlefield awareness. Sometimes I also throw in Tough Luck, because it makes sticks tougher and therefore more satisfying.

I hardly ever touch Tilt. In combination with Mythic and Thunderstorm it simply makes killing certain enemies take too much time and ammunition (the return of bullet sponge brutes) and Iron, because I figure I'm going to die once in awhile.

I thought, though, that if I dropped from Heroic to Normal, I might add Iron for some extra bonus points, try to be careful, and see if it actually felt more like an accomplishment.

...or is Sarcastic Gamer just happy to see you? More of you than they can handle, apparently, since the site is no longer accessible, leading me to depend on a report from Kotaku that the site, along with CVG, is citing the usual "sources" that a new Halo game will be announced at E3. Halo Chronicles? Halo 4? Lego Halo? Nothing at all? Time will tell.

I arranged Leonidas for my jazz band for the end of the school year. Unfortunately my band teacher didn't have faith in us and decided to not even try the piece even though we just stood around and did nothing that day. Anyway I wanted this piece to be used by someone so I am putting it up for anyone to use. I hope that someone can play this with a band or just enjoy the music. Thanks!

Rock Anthem for Saving the World Sheet Music

Will someone please make this? I think it is the best song in the Halo soundtrack but I can't seem to find the sheet music anywhere. It seems there is music for a ton of songs from Halo, so it seems like Rock Anthem for Saving the World should have sheet music too.

It's tough for a game to be funny. So it's no slight praise when GamesRadar says that Hail to the Chimp is funny-- if you're in your 20s:

Through it all, the comedy keeps flowing, often in the form of commercials or news reports. Just how funny these bits are is debatable here in the office, but we have the same arguments about Family Guy and Saturday Night Live. However, we can all agree that Hail to the Chimp is definitely a step above most games that bill themselves as "hilarious." And also that you have to be in your 20s to appreciate it.
