Content by Games

Most content at rampancy.net is tagged with an association with one or more games; usually a game by Bungie Studios (formerly Bungie Software Inc.) or by another developer with connections to Bungie (Wideload, A Certain Affinity, Wingnut).

Here you can choose one game and browse site content related to that game.

After a brief outage yesterday, halo.bungie.org is back, sporting a new page layout, as well as amusing picture of Bungie beta testers . They've also posted a report on the changes in the color of the Halo logo... looks like a simple case of more cyan to me.

game:

Apparently the magazine exclusives have expired, because Bungie has posted a clean, non-watermarked copy of their second screenshot at their Screenshots page.

You've likely seen it already, but it's nicer to collect mint edition screenshots...

Crashed has announced his new Halo site, the Praetorian Militia. Choosing to specialize in Halo order/clans instead of news, his site is intended to be a roster of Halo groups and their players. Thinking of starting one up? Stop by and check it out.

game:

If you were looking for Oni info, then it was a good place to be (despite the relative chaos). As for Halo info, very little, if any was given, so don't worry if you missed out on it. About the only remotely Halo related tidbit was that Oni will not be set in the same universe as Halo or Marathon...

For a wrap up of the interview, you might want to check out Onicore in the next day or so, as they're sure to be dissecting it in more detail than I will be.

game:

Kudos to Crashed, who pointed out that the second half of Mac Game News' Halo preview has been posted. Focussing on weapons, it's a must read, and will provide material for another FAQ update tonight. Be sure to stop by and check it out.

A quick reminder: IMG will be hosting a chat with Bungie West's Brent Pease in about two hours time, at 9:00pm CST. Yours truly will be sitting in, listening for any interesting tidbits, and if you've got any Oni questions, be sure to stop by.

A quick item of interest for users of the Macintosh Voodoo2 and Voodoo3 reference drivers. 3Dfx has updated them both, fixing a few bugs and adding the ability to flash your ROM back to its PC state. Here they are:

Let's hope this isn't the end of 3Dfx's support for these drivers.

game:

Marathon's Story has pointed out an article at Mac Central regarding the now infamous Gamespot Macworld Expose article. Included in it is a statement from Bungie contradicting one of the centerpiece quotes in the article... worth taking a look at.

game:

First off, the FAQ has been updated with new information from yesterday's crop of articles, and will probably get another update tonight when the second half of the MGN preview is posted.

Next, the Forum has been converted over to the new format, and is chugging away quite nicely... thus far. Watch for bug fixes over the next few days. Or don't, if such things don't interest you.

An anonymous source at Apple has, via email, suggested that Apple has a new, high quality Halo trailer (possibly the rumored official one), which is to be featured in Apple's Quicktime Showcase in the near future. The quality has been compared to the recent Star Wars: Episode 1 trailer, though no more info was forthcoming.

game:

Next Generation Online has posted an interview with Bungie's Nathan Bitner, a frequent poster on the Halo forums. Focussed on development, it's a great read--here's an excerpt:

topic:

Well, in light of the new articles, the FAQ will be seeing a considerable update in the next few hours, including such topics as vehicles, guesturing, and the setting.

Remember, if you have any questions you'd like to see answered, pass them along, and I'll do my best to get an answer for them. Vee have vays of making people talk...

Day of the acronyms! Many thanks to Cunbelin for letting me know about a new, detailed Halo preview at MacGameNews.com. I'm just reading through it now, but first impressions are good... another one worth checking out.

game:

Kudos to Mal, who pointed out that Mac Gamer's Ledge has quite a few Halo items in their news today. Some interesting links (enough for a bookmarking of the page), definitely worth checking out.

game:

While we're on the topic, most of the active parts of the site have been switched over to the new layout now, and the inactive parts will be changed as well in the next few days. The only major, remaining obstacle is the Forum, but an hour or two of enraged shouting should bring it in line as well. Apologies in advance for missing cookies...

game:

After a grueling, multi-hour effort to decipher my own code, I've managed to get the Database working more or less how I want it.

There are still some formatting errors inside some articles, but I'll be weeding those out as I find them... if you find that something isn't working right, it's probably because I have my hand stuck in the gears. Just give me a chance to pull it out, and try again in a few minutes.

game:

IMG will be hosting a chat with Bungie West's Brent Pease, Oni's project leader, in their chat room on August 11th at 9:00pm BST. While it will be primarily Oni related (watch Onicore for details there), you never know when a Halo question might slip in.

An interesting tidbit from Jester (I think that's you, correct me if I'm wrong :) regarding a higher res version of the MWNY video. In response to this email:

I was informed that I should direct my request for a Halo Hi-rez to you......have fun wading through e-mails the next few days

Gamespot's Micheal Mullen replied:

game:

Kudos to Maul for pointed out a new Halo preview at Gamecenter. No new pictures, alas, but some interesting tidbits in the article, including this estimate of completeness:

The developers estimated that they have finished only a third of the work necessary to complete the project, but what they have done so far is definitely a step in the right direction.

Only a third done...

game:

One for you Ian M. Banks fans out there. Marathon's Story has posted a peculiar picture in the news today, no explanation or description given, save that it links to a new and interesting section about Culture influences in Halo. Definitely worth checking out.

game:

Alright, I admit it... this is just a test post to see if a few bug fixes are working. Ye olde email box is a bit spare on news items, and thus the posts are reduced to pleas for news items and filler. Tragic.

Updater is working fine, though. About time, too.

game:

Apparently, there's still a few quirks in the new news updater script... I think I've got them hammered out now, but watch for oddities in the news (dates out of order, mashed up posts, etc.). Thanks in advance for your patience over the next few days...

game:

I've given it all the in house testing that I could, and now it's time to let the readers decide. You're (hopefully) looking at the new Core design, which should be a bit smaller and a bit faster than the old one.

game:

Kudos to naelot t-cell, who pointed out the first sighting of the Halo banner on a site other than Bungie's: Blizzard's (by way of Mythology ;).

game:

As reported earlier at halo.bungie.org, Bungie has posted a Halo banner on their bungie.com site, featuring that nasty jeep machinegun in action. Not a major thing in itself, but lets hope that banner begins appearing all over the web... kudos to the first non-bungie site spotting!

game:

Zach Stroum, better known to Marathon vets as VidBoi, sends word of a new Halo webring. Here's an excerpt from the PR:

I'm inviting anyone out there with a love for Halo to sign up and be there when it all happens. Gamers will be hungry for the latest news, screens, movies and rumors. This is going to be one helluva ride.

Interested? Then check it out, and sign your site up for the ring (how apt).

game:

Kudos to Butcher, who pointed out a new Gamespot preview, the second of many in the next few days, I'm sure. The screenshot is the same as the IGN preview, but the content is very interesting. Here's one line that is certain to stir up speculation:

Also, the ring encircling the planet was constructed by a third and as yet unseen alien race, but Bungie wouldn't comment on whether we'd be able to see or fight against that race when the game is complete.

Definitely worth reading... enough info for yet another FAQ update.

game:

And so early, too! While wandering around through the private directories of Bungie's webserver, the guys at Soon(tm) appear to have stumbled upon a Halo readme file! Knowing their responsibilities to the community, they did what they had to... and posted it. Worth checking out. ;)

game:

With the influx of new information, the FAQ is seeing a few updates, and will continue to do so over the next few days. If you see that I've missed something (or am blatantly incorrect), feel free to point it out.

game:

Damn you, Murphy! And kudos to Supercobra and Chris t' Crappy, who both pointed out the new Halo preview at IGN.

Yay, another PR cut and paste, you say? Not so! Not only is there a brand new screenshot, but a detailed preview article too! I've yet to read it myself (rushing to post this ;), but the screenshot alone should be enough for a good week of speculation.

IMG has posted a very interesting item regarding a recent Gamespot article that stirred things up for a few days last week. That article, of course, was the very slanted Macworld Expose, and it looks like it garnered some notice.

Hmm... apparently we weren't on crack after all. In the interests of not ecouraging this kind of tabloid journalism, you might avoid that second link, but definitely take a look at what people are having to say about it at IMG.

After just over 200 votes, I've closed up the most recent poll, analyzed the results, and posted them for those intrepid few of you who actually care. An interesting poll, though, wrapping up in a three way tie... which name do YOU think sounds coolest? Well, we have some idea now...

game:

That's right--the HL server is up before the site! Noctavis sends word that a new, dedicated Halo server is now up and running. And here's a bit about it:

Right now it's a bit spare in the files area, since it is so new, but we plan on tossing up every last tidbit we can find regarding HALO as soon as possible. We also anticipate some intermittent outages over the next 24 hours, while our SysAdmin shifts a few things around.

We're still making the necessary preparations to launch HaloNews.Com itself.... Stay tuned!

Not directly Halo related, but of interest to Mac Halo fans. Accelerate Your Mac reports that 3Dfx has finally released their Macintosh Voodoo3 Reference drivers for public consumption. Only beta versions, mind you, but beta versions that have been giving some awesome benchmarks already. Definitely worth checking out if you've yet to invest in a hardware acceleration card, which Halo will eventually be requiring...

game:

Kudos to Mal, who pointed out a news item on Mac Gamer's Ledge about a new Halo site, Halo Ground, which is looking for some user requests. Stop by, tell them what you want, and click the button... simple as that.

game:

Oh, the humanity! Details are sketchy at this point, but all indications point towards a brutal attack upon Bungie headquarters in Chicago by a depraved band of cannibals. Yes, the human type.

game:

A few folks have written in regarding the Mac Observer movie, and the verdict appears to be in. Despite a few glitches (like people walking in front of the camera) and reportedly poor color quality, the resolution is much better.

Hate to update and run, but I'll leave it at that. Thanks to all who wrote in!

game:

I'd like to take this moment to coin the acronym YAHM, for the express purpose of reporting this sort of item. IMG reports that The Mac Observer has posted a reportedly higher quality version of the MWNY Halo demo, which they claim is superior to the Gamespot version currently floating around (in it's many reincarnations).

game:

Though various issues have been really stirring up the water in the Myth community, the Halo front remains fairly quiet. Nearly two weeks since the launch (incredible that we're still running on that infusion of news), and still no new screenshots or sign of the rumored official trailer. Lean pickings until then, I'm afraid...

game:

Dave at Halo Central is looking for questions for a new FAQ, so if you've got something to ask, stop on by. While you're at it, be sure to send a copy here, too--the more the merrier.

game:

Currently at 183 votes, this week's poll will be closing tomorrow evening, hopefully with 200 votes in it. It'll be a close one right to the finish, to be sure... if you haven't yet, get your vote in now.

Watch for the dissection of the results (and some discussion about them) around this time tomorrow night. Might just have something interesting to talk about...

game:

In a brief, but much needed forum post, Bungie's Nathan Bitner offers a few words of wisdom:

Look, we don't even know here who would have said that. So take anonymous sources with a grain of salt. Lord knows, you guys should have learned that by now. ;)

And by the way, for what it's worth, it's infinitely easier to port TO the Mac than FROM the Mac; perhaps that's the answer to many of your questions.

game:

After a weekend hiatus, h.b.org is back up and running. No reason is given for the downtime, but it's business as usual again. The Townhall is also back up (and expecting their 3 millionth visitor!)... bad weekend for webservers, I guess.

game:

In light of the below Gamespot article, and the public response to it, I've been spurred into writing a rant about the platform politics involved. I'm not out to stomp on toes here-I do support Apple and my platform of choice, but I think some people are going about doing likewise in a poor way.

Kudos to Claude, who passed along the URL for Halo Legacy, which has now been added to the Nav console below. Enjoy.

game:

As posted at Marathon's Story, Gamespot has posted a slightly biased article on the state of Mac gaming following the Macworld Expo in New York. And, of course, Halo is in the limelight. It's stirring up a bit of controversy on the sites and forums, and is worth taking a look at.

game:

A few items for the ledger today. Top of the list is Halam's return and redesign-and it's looking good. Nice news setup, too. Second is Halo Central's redesign and article, as detailed in David's PR:

game:

Kudos to Dark Helmet for pointing out an interesting interview with Bungie's very unique DIrector of Customer Support, Matt Soell. A few Halo details are touched upon, among other things... and it's a short one, too. Well worth the visit.

game:

Seriously, 100 votes can't be an accurate cross section of our readers, can it? Go on, make your pick and click the button... your opinion is valuable, and besides, there's a pretty bar graph for the results... HOW CAN YOU RESIST?!

Hmm, the white suited men are here again...

game:

After partaking in much discussion on the forum, and lamenting over the sorry state of the Database, I sat down and put some thoughts about multiplayer Halo to HTML and posted a new article, Breaking Ground. It's more or less one long winded wish list, but hey, there's some paragraphs in there...
