Just got the Halo PC Demo. All the multiplayer servers I join show as (~50 ms ping), but upon joining I find out that everyone has lag out the gazoo, even though they also joined with such low pings.

Anybody know what's up?

Well, my download isn't even finished yet... so I can't comment on the lag.

Perhaps it's caused by.. people downloading the demo? Nevermind, just kidding. Have you played the SP game yet? Does it play smoothly? Are you having lag, or just framerate issues?

Framerate issues are not in the SP.

It's just lag in the Multiplayer. . Many people are suffering, too.

NeoGod:

Most of the servers up for the demo are not dedicated, and most are being hosted by only cable, and cable doesnt give out enough upstream to handle the full 16 people. Its only recommended for up to 4 people. In any case, If You ARE joining dedicated servers, must likely the people arent lagging. They are just suffering from poor frame rate and are too stupid to realize.

I recommend not joinging any servers with more than 6 players, that i what has worked best for me. I noticed the same thing in some of the larger games, it became next to impossible to play because of the lag.

I don't think the demo has been updated recently, so any of the improvements to the netcode made in the time since the initial release, or made in the new Halo Custom Edition, aren't reflected in the demo.

Early on, many commented that the ping displayed in the server browser in Halo was not at all indicative of server performance. Try some other servers that have higher pings, you may get better performance. A lot of demo servers try to host more players than they can handle. Also, Halo taxes a server's CPU more than a lot of previous games.

In reply to: Re: Major Halo Demo Multiplayer Lag.

Well think about it: The server is trying 2 hold like maybe 50 games or so with 16 players each...that would put lag as there would be way too many people to show each detail...less people means less information to send and therefore faster and no lag.
I haven't downloaded it and don't know about it so I'm guessing. I'm in the process of downloading the full version of halo for pc and my friend told me that when you go on and you see someone and your about to shoot they are already dead so I don't plan to go on and try the lag.
