well i was watchin the e3 gameplay demo and everything and i think bungie might have slipped up. when the player walks up to the guy who is on the radio he says something like "i knew we called for back up i didnt know they would send a spartan". If you notice he refered to mc as a spartan, and in normal speech if there is one of something you would refer to it as its proper name which in his case is mc. but instead he calls mc a spartan like he knows of others. im just saying also, they really shouldnt know that mc is still alive since he kinda just arrives back at earth.... so to the radioman hes just another spartan.. im super tired so if this doesnt make much sense ill make it clearer later it later..

Have you read the Halo novel? It's called the Fall of Reach. It describes how scientists kidnapped a bunch of children aged like 5 years old, and trained them from that age to be soldiers. They all became spartans, but when the Covenant attacked 'Reach', an entire planet used as a military base of operations, all spartans except John (Master Chief) died in battle, the pillar of autumn fled, and that's where Halo's story begins.
Now, if I do remember correctly, at some point when the spartans were sent off to fight somewhere, the scientists had actually brought in a new bunch of children to train into spartans, so while the storyline in Halo is coming along, more young spartans are being trained elsewhere. So I believe you are right, in Halo 2 we may see more spartans to fight by your side! :)

In reply to: Not the only spartan...

if u read the novel the first strike u find out that about 6 spartans survived reach plus they find a cryo-pod floating around halo's rubble that had a mortally wounded, frozen startan in it. ive found all this out and ive only read the first half (i cant find it lol!). howeaver, after mc extracts the spartans, they get attacked by the covinant and some of them die. also, an adimeral and Dr. Hasely survive reach. :)

i heard about that from a friend but i havent read the books myself.. but what role do you think they will have with mc? i bet the books would tell me that too but id rather hear it from somebody else lol

the other spartans are the mc team.

u guys should read all the books over again because not all the facts u said here is true, there was 200+ spartans at the begining of the program but they narroded it down to the best 75 and after training was complete there was only 32 spartans left (that could fight) 1 other spartan may or may not have made it alive, she was badly injured and in a cryo tybe. they are trying to make another group of spartans, but since REACH fell where r they going to train 'em?earth is to hostile , so dont count on more than 2 spartans.

1st off the guy above my last one saying the Spartan II program. I know that there was/is a Spartan III program but whether they finished is entirely up to Bungie...
Umm there was 150 children and didnt have the money to get all 150 so they got 75...numbers maybe wrong but they took half the children - the best half. Many Spartans were unable to fight after the agumentation as it had side effects. One by one the fighting 32 were killed...
Now we wait to see what happens in halo 2. In my opinion there are no Spartan IIIs as that would make you weaker than them and they wouldnt see mc as a leader. They would have their own leader.

I've read ALL of the Halo novels, and at the the end of First strike, MC is with four other spartans: Linda (she survived in Fall Of Reach), Fred, Will, and Kelly. However, kelly goes off with Dr. Halsey in a ship that was capable of slipspace. (oh,and I know someone who has a beta copy of the nonplayable demo) Oh, and the general dies, but takes 500 covanent ships with him.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: Not the only spartan...

there are 3 surviving spartans. Dr.Halsey couldnt take sacrificing people "for the greater good" and stole a ship and jumped off to slipspace and taking Kelly (superfast Spartan) with her. Linda and Fred and John (Master Chief) went back to Earth!!!

What the hell is shmogblast any way???

Void's picture

In reply to: Not the only spartan...

there are no other spatans left, except kelly, who is off with Dr. Hasley on some wild goose chase into covie space. the are no other spatans II's in sol system, exludeing the rumors of the Spartans III.

After reading the halo books you find out the "officaly" Spartan never die they are just listed as MIA. This is because if the public learns that Spartans can not stand up to the invaders there is no hope. The Spartan started as a secert project but leaked out after a few victories by them.

Anonymous's picture

If I remember in a halo novel excerpt there is mention that MC is fighting alongside another spartan. Although whether or not their are any more spartans still in service, or MC is the last of his kind is up to the guys at Bungie,

Anonymous's picture

If you read the new Halo novel (First Strike), you would realize that in the end there are (I think) four other Spartans alive besides just the Master Chief. Therefore, if Bungie doesn't include them in the game, it would shock me more than if they did.

and if they do show up somewhere during halo 2 it would anwser why mc could leave earth and attack the covenant home world

No it wouldn't. Just because there's more than one of you dosn't mean:
A: You know where your target is.
B: You can get there.
C: You have enough firepower, even after teaming up.

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: i agree

when halo blows up they find more than one super solider however, a few are mortally wounded. Theis leads to the idea that the DOCK was in contact with the fourrunners who built halo and possibly left some in the structure of halo and somehow survived. And yes a few spartans to survive the reach but die later in battle. I've also found out that master chief is capurted by covenant spartans who obtained plans from reach. He beats them and then a fight against the last spartan of the covenant breaks out. A rumour is master chief loses his arm and dies or is mortally wounded and the game ends.

Spartan064Ryan's picture

I was reading the halo series books, and in First Strike (takes place just before Halo 2) at the end, MC is with 4 other Spartans(Linda, Kelly, Will, and Fred). So i think they were all just spread out over Earth to engage the covenant at different places so as to not to overwhelm the Chief(my ass... chief destroyed Halo without any help...)and get him killed too fast, or something like that... i dunno, but i am pretty sure that Chief isnt the only one left.

Yes, First Strike does cover the fate of the other Spartans. However, it's still unclear what, if any, role they will play in the plot of Halo 2.

Mor7anius's picture

Don't worry, it does make sense ^_^
This has been covered a few times on different forums. Yes, you would think that because the Marine says 'A Spartan' it sounds like there is a possibility of being more. The counter-argument is that 'A Spartan' is both Plural and Singular. By saying 'A Spartan' you can refer to one of them, or many of them.

Personally, I have my doubts about there being more Spartan in Halo 2. But who knows. We won't find out until the game is released.

well he probably said that b/c the earth soilders probably did not know what happend at reach and still thought all of them were alive. But at the end of fall of reach only 3 spartanscome out of the station. Linda, Fred, And master cheif. there were four, but grace was killed by a brute's grenade launcher. Then after that they probably get back to earth like a month before halo 2 starts and that they tell earth that the covenent are coming. plus it would be cool, if you helped destroy the next ring with the remaining spartens for a couple levels or so.

Although I agree that there may be more spartans, there are two reasons that you're theory is a stupid thing to base that on (unless you haven't read the books). In the book The Fall of Reach, there are a bunch of Spartans that are trained, and the soldier in the demo may not know that the MC is SUPPOSEDLY the only one left (all of the others SUPPOSEDLY died on Reach). The book First Strike leaves us with a few more Spartans that survived Reach, but at this point nobody knows for sure weather or not Bungie will continue with multiple Spartans.

Also, the MC is a Spartan, so you shouldn't get so excited that someone called him a Spartan. Because he is.

Zaphod Beeblebrox's picture

the point is valid, after then end of "Halo- First Strike" There were several Spartans left, therefore supporting the possibility in Halo 2 The MC is not the only one left, then again Bungie writers could have thought of how the MC is the only one left, and you must remember the Spartans have been on variouse escipades and would not be subject to total secrecy especially if Dr. Halsy leaks any info out to the public, this can go many ways but in my personal opinion there are Spartans left, just think how cool would it be to be paired up w/ a fellow Spartan.....

Anonymous's picture

In reply to: I agree w/ Jizzonwizzon

so does the fact that 3 other spartans survived mean there is a possibility for 4 player co-op play.that would be awesome especially if it supports system link co-op; one player per xbox.

narcogen's picture

In reply to: 4 player co-op

There's probably no relation between how many Spartans survive in the story and what the technical capabilities for cooperative play are. Coop was a last-minute add on the first game. I'm hoping more attention will be paid to it this time around. But I'd prefer to see network coop, even with 2 players only, before 4 player coop (split screen or otherwise).

C'mon, guys...

This type of talk has been generated at EVERY Halo site on the web. Just read the books (yes, read three books; trust me it won't hurt).

You'll find that the Spartan Project was leaked to the public for moral purposes. Sure, not all the details, but their existence and achievements. They are respected (and disliked) by their wonderful friends the ODSTs/Helljumpers, who, may I add, are the guys with the Spartan-esque suits in the E3 Demo Video. As for First Strike--yes, 3 or 4 Spartans are left on the Gettysburg heading home to warn Earth, while Dr. Halsey takes a Spartan on a "secret mission." If you want to speculate about the Halo storyline, try thinking about what Dr. Halsey is doing.

Lesson: Don't just play Halo, Read Halo!

Peace and Happy Fragging.

in the beggining of the first halo...captain keyes says that he saved a spartan that was not destroyed (something like that) so there was probably 1 or 2 more still there but no one knows where it is.

Poop Scoop's picture

NO, they dont all look alike because, although in their armor they may be nearly indistuinguishable (sp?), they are normal Humans that were just selected for their mental and physical attributes, and placed into the Spartain. They are not all clones or anything like that. go read a book.

Heck, in Marathon we never even knew if the player was HUMAN or not.

There once was 25 Spartans but they were wiped out by the Covenant on Reach. I take your point though as I have read the prequel The Fall of Reach book and personally I think they might have escaped.

Anonymous's picture

well, read first strike, will, kelly, fred, linda r still alive, also not many people know that the spartans died on reach
very few people even no reach no longer exists, military doesnt want public to know there losing, also spartans r either wounded in action or missing in action on report to make the illusion that they dont die.

Jackel's picture

According to the Halo: First Strike the founder of the Spartan II program; Doctor Catherine Halsey left the MC and his small squad consiting of both spartan and human personal on another ship with one of the main Spartans; Kelly. She is the fastest Spartan and Dr.Halsey finds importance in her. I believe if any Spartan will appear, the first will be Kelly along with the Doctor. I'm aslo positive that some other spartans will appear, why have 2 when you can have the whole gang!

Anonymous's picture

In the book that goes along with Halo there is indeed more spartans. The spartan referred to as master chief is just one of a group. I didnt read the whole thing but im pretty sure that Master Chief is the only surviving spartan in the prequal to the game.

READ ALL THE BOOKS!!!

Anonymous's picture

if you have read the halo books you would know that the MC is not the only spartan

Anonymous's picture

BOOK 1 (The Fall Of Reach): when the spartians (MC included) the officer who trains the spartians (i forgot his name) says he needs to leave the 1st group of spartians to train the 2nd batch or somthing like that.

BOOK 3 (First Strike): as MC and Cortona leave the destroyed Halo, they find a pellican full of about 5 O.D.S.T.s (so there were some survivors from halo going BOOM)(their might have been more or less not sure) and a cryo tube with a frozen, and mortaly injured, Spartian. after they leave the go back to Reach to see what happened (after capturing a Covanent Flag ship!!!) they sneak in to a part of the planet that the covenant purposly didn't "glass" and rescue a handful of spartians, a general, Dr. Hasley (or something like that), and 2 or 3 marienes. I admit that in other operations b4 the book ended, Dr. Hasley ran w/ one of the spartians on a "secret mission" and some died in a mission that blew up a TON of Coavnent ships that were heading for earth!!! im not sure, but i think that Dr. Hasley was able to heal the spartian that was crittically injurd in the cryo tube.

if i had my books with me when I wrote this comment the names and numbers would be more accurate but i don't. oh well.

it stands for Orbital Drop Shock Trooper. They are really badass soldiers who drop down out of space in little one-man pods. They are far better than normal marines.

Anonymous's picture

1. ODST stands for "Orbital Drop Shock Trooper" also known as "Helljumpers" they get this name from the method of insertion onto hostile planets which involves getting fired out of a ship in a small tube.

2. I think it would be cool if your backed up by other spartans in halo 2, but who needs 'um when you got Sgt. Johnson backing you up?

MarineSniper's picture

In reply to: 2 things

Alright alright a few things:
1. The Marine in the E3 Demo said SPARTAN not MC as he cant tell which Spartan is who with a suit on...duh!! He didnt expect a Spartan as he thought they were all wiped out on Reach, but jizzonwizzon has a point IF the Spartan-III program was successful AND they made it to Earth which I find unlikely after the Covenant surrounded Reach and no ship would have had made it past,he could have thought the Spartan-IIIs were on their way and didnt think they would go to where he was.
2. The book on Halo the game 'The Flood' tells us that he goes into the human captured base (as they captured the base from the covenant) but you never see it. MC went to talk to some ODST general who noted his PALE WHITE SKIN so he is in fact white...pale white as his skin has never been in the sun as he is always in his suit.
3. After Halo is destroyed yes there is another Spartan in a cryo tube but MC noted that he/she was dead. That Spartan could have been a Spartan-III but what would it be doing with MC? I mean he is very experienced but keep your possibilities open...
4. Kelly was taken with Dr. Hasley for another assignment...but she was really weak. I think she went somewhere to get healed maybe Earth and either goes to Earth and help the other Spartans or somewhere else. Its also possible Dr. Hasley chose Kelly for speed to find the Spartan-IIIs and that might be her assignment...
5. In my opinion you go to Earth, clean up the Covenant, and then somehow stop them from glassing Earth, follow them to another Halo ring (there would be another Halo ring in this game I'm sure) and then finish off the Covenant and try to learn more about Halo before destroying it yet again. Somewhere in there I'm sure you are going to learn about the Forunners because in the books it tells you that THE COVENANT USE FORUNNER TECHNOLOGY!!! The Covenant don't take strong weapons because they stole it from the Forunners and didnt get stronger technology. I also think that maybe you find Forunner technology and you have to get it before the Covenant do. Think how strong you would be!! 343 Guilty Spark said AT LEAST Class 12 which means there is stronger technology than 6x our technology (Class II as 343 Guilty Spark said x6=12) so then you go onto the Covenant home world in Halo 3 after taking over a Covenant ship and finding the home world and take them out...

Anonymous's picture

read the books dude it tells you theres more.
