In reply to: Thoughts on Halo 2 trailer

ok now im new to this site, as well as new to be over-analytical on Halo, so bear with me. anyway...

1. i would think that if the covenant were glassing the planet, the shots would be seen coming from space in the trailer... there is seemingly no shots coming from space towards earth (and yes it is earth because someone from bungie said we could see washington getting hit). so, now we ask, ok why the ships at all, and the explosions? well since it appears that it is our own weapons going off planetside causing the explosions, we can assume that there are covenant ground forces that are in combat. so then... that would also mean that they had to be transported there... and it would be safe to assume that the covenant would put their most valuable ships outside the range of the MAC guns... they wouldnt want troop transports being blown to pieces because they probably cant defend themselves all that well, so they "folded" those inside the ring of MAC guns.

2. now some people have said "why in the world would the MC jump towards a ship when hes just gonna bounce off the shield?" well IF we assume that those particular ships seem in the trailer were transports, then it is also safe to assume they would have to lower their shields to let the smaller space-to-ground carriers out of their bays. therefore making it safe to the MC to land on the hull of the ship... however... we dont see anything going planetside from those ships.. so if they were transports... where are the S-t-G carriers... not in the vid. so i could be completely wrong.

thats all i can think of for now. im a halo addict, but dont know anything about marathon, being a PC owner. so im still a rookie on bungie :P

Having had ample time now to watch the Halo 2 trailer more than a few times, here are a few thoughts and observations, in no particular order:

1) The modified Mjolnir suit looks great to me. There were more than a few people who felt that the MC's look in the shipped game was a little too, shall we say, chunky, especially compared to the slimmer look of the original cyborg from the MWNY '99 video. The new model seems to have all the best of both.

2) From the mission summary, the "neutralize adaptive parasitic life form" item listed as "completed" might be interpreted to mean we've seen the last of the Flood, at least for now. Perhaps this is just part of Bungie's planned story arc, that the Humans and Covenant will be constant participants, and that some as-yet-unrevealed third party wills step in to make things more interesting later.

3) The structure that the MC is on in the vid looks quite a bit more like levels in Marathon than it does like anything from Halo. As already speculated elsewhere, it's probably a space station, possibly a ship-- to me, at least, calling it "the spoke" seems to indicate the former rather than the latter.

4) At first I thought that the "Admiral" character might possibly have been Keyes, somehow resurrected or cloned, but then Bungie revealed that this is not the case. Even so, his reaction to Cortana's announcement about reinforcements seems odd. Cortana only escaped from the PoA and Halo by hitching a ride inside the MC's skull. It seems to me that either the Admiral should be shocked to be hearing from her at all, OR he should know how she got back, which makes his "what the hell sort of reinforcements have you got?" question seem a little strange.

5) Bungie has done some really impressive cinematics, starting with the MWNY '99 trailer. I think it's inevitable that at some point, each successive work will have less impact, because we're already prepared for how amazing they can be. However, this one still blows me away.

6) If I had to pick out a single best element, both in the shipping Halo game and in this trailer, it would be the music, hands down. The way Marty has played around with the Halo theme, making it more ominous, conveying the gravity of the situation displayed in the trailer is just great. The original Halo theme was not modified that much, it seems, since it debuted in the MWNY trailer. Here's hoping the same for the Halo 2 theme.

7) While it may mean nothing, the dialogue between Cortana and the MC ("What if you miss?" - "I won't") might indicate that she is once again communicating with him remotely, and not from inside his head. Perhaps this explains the Admiral's behavior. Possibly more time has passed between Halo 1 and Halo 2 than we think, and that in intervening events Cortana has been reinstalled as the AI in a ship or a space station. The MC may have been away somewhere else (perhaps getting fitted for that new suit?) and that might explain why the Admiral was unaware he was back (and why they didn't save a fighter for him, requiring his little bit of impromptu paratrooping).

8) In the final scene, many have already pointed out the mushroom cloud that appears over the approximate location of Bungie's own headquarters in Redmond, Washington. It also appears as if there's one over their old headquarters in Chicago. What made me scratch my head were all the explosions north of there. It appears as if there is an awful lot of activity in arctic and subarctic Canada. Why? Has global warming pushed the population of the Earth towards the warming poles and away from the sweltering equator?

9) I've been assuming that the craft in that final scene are either the "orbitals" to which the General refers, or the "assault carriers" to which the Admiral refers. However, at least in that shot, they appear to be neither firing on the surface, nor being fired upon. Oh, yeah... and if you look at them upside down, they look like Marathon symbols.

the whole mission log is what they think happened they think they destroyed the flood so they put it under complete they think that guilty spark is dead so that is under complete. I don't thik it means that they won't see any more flood it just means that mc thinks that he won't.

I am going to have to agree with you on this one. Although I highly doubt that we will see the flood in Halo 2 we know that more Halo's exist and they could all have flood on them. Probably all bottled up though. I do believe that we will see GS make an appearance in the sequel, I mean bungie does have a history of resurrecting half dead treacherous AI's ;).

True, but usually they wait until the third game :)

If I had to bet, I'd say that perhaps the Flood will be back, but not in this game. Maybe Halo 3. After all... the nearest other Halo is probably at least 50,000 light years away... it'll take awhile to get there :)

I don't anticipate seeing the Flood any time soon. For one, I think we DID mostly destroy them; maybe they'll return, but not soon, as Bungie's not so cheap as to resurrect them already as a mere plot trick. For another, 99% of the voting public hated the Flood. I mean, like they say, "Four out of five gamers agree, the developer should learn that 4 is greater than 1."

Finally, as has been said, we THINK the Flood is destroyed, so it's listed as such. That doesn't mean they actually are.

Agreed. "Spoke" would be a crappy name for a ship; but it's good for a station. Also, it might not be a proper noun - not "the Spoke", the name, as much as "the spoke", the piece of something else, which happens to be spoke-like. e.g., I'd say "There's a cat on my tire," and that wouldn't necessarily mean my car was a Ford Tire XL

: 4) At first I thought that the "Admiral" character might

Yes, this is a tough point. It's possible that the Admiral knows about the MC being back, but doesn't think to connect him with the idea of "reinforcements" - like someone said at HBO, infantry isn't your first thought when you think of assets in a space battle. So the Admiral's expecting some massive armada of Forerunner LiceShips or something, and he doesn't think the Master Chief is a reinforcement worth mentioning, any more than the papers printed a front-page news story every time a new recruit moved to the WWII front.

"All the good ideas are taken," but you can still do them exceedingly well. Especially when compared to the majority of other game teasers, the H2 trailer was like a Nobel-winning epic.

Damn straight. Aside from the music itself, it was also coordinated fantastically with the visuals - not just some random track placed over the movie, but synched perfectly for what was happening. Hell, watch the last mission status message - it flashes to the same beat as the violins :)

I'm tempted to think the music was composed especially for the trailer.

maybe the spoke is some sort of term lyk , "reinforcements r on the spoke" which may mean lyk "on the way" u kno how they use that millatary lingo lyk in vietnam they told distantce by saying things lyk "its half a click away" see?

the "orbitals) r the orbital MAC guns and he cant turn them around to attack the assualt carriers ( which the MC is jumping onto) beacuse he is trying to hold the rest of the covinant off and if he turns them they will slip the "kill zone" which is the area where he can shoot at them.

Yes, people have suggested this. But it's starting to seem unlikely, just because Bungie seems to usually be using current-day language and "on the spoke" doesn't currently mean anything.

Also, it's "like," not "lyk."

In reply to: Re: What does the trailer show us about Halo 2?

I believe Cortana is inside the MC's head for a couple of reasons. Cortana never communicated with the MC in Halo1 unless she was inside his helmet or if he was talking to her on a hologram console. Remember when the MC and Guilty Spark have their little fling while Cortana is in Halos mainframe? Well they never had any verbal communication. Also, when there is an empty fighter bay and everyone is talking about death and destruction and how they are losing battle, it does not seem logical to leave such a very important and tactical AI inside a ship that could be blown to bits in a second. Didnt it seem like everyone in that ship or station was on call, and off the ship? I got the impression it was abandoned. I mean, flashing red lights and the lights in the elevator shaft seemed like the ship or station was on auxilary power. I hope i made some sense there guys, its late...

Because she says "you" and he says "I", instead of them both saying "we".

Cortana does, just following insertion into the MC's frame in PoA, say "hey, watch your head, remember there's TWO of US in here."

Again... this is REALLY nitpicky, and nobody at Bungie may necessarily have chosen these words to indicate this fact-- they may just have assumed that regardless of the situation, Cortana should refer to him in the second person, either because he is separate, or because he's the one actually responsible for doing the jumping.

He definitely looks much better, having lost the bulk... though honestly, most concepts of augmentation suits do look a bit like "hydrocephalic gorillas". (Quote taken from "Starship Troopers")

Actually being a true cyborg instead of a man in a suit would allow him to compact down. And honestly, I suspect we'll more easily be able to build machines that can perform actions at greater accuracy and speed, than we'll be able to modify human bodies. (Genetically, or otherwise)

: 2) From the mission summary, the "neutralize adaptive

Well... I'd call blowing up the Halo a probably successful "neutralization", unless the Flood is much hardier than Halo 1 would lead us to believe. And anyway, do we have any indication that the Flood could somehow follow him to Earth? (Hitch a ride on his spacecraft, perhaps? Very Aliens. )

There is the strange fascination that Guilty Spark had with Human history... perhaps foreshadowing to a deeper connection between Humans and the Flood? This reminds me an awful lot of Niven's connection between Humans and the Pak, which are considered one of the most dangerous races in Known Space.

As far as a third party, beyond the Covenant... it made things interesting last time, but Bungie may have come up with some better tactical challenges with the Covenant. I'm certain we haven't seen all that the Covies have to offer, yet, and so it may be interesting enough with them... However, I still expect Bungie to toss in some fascinating twists. Perhaps alien technology somewhere on the Earth. Perhaps we'll finally find out why they've got a beef with us in the first place.

: 3) The structure that the MC is on in the vid looks quite

Probably a larger ship. One large enough to accomodate a bay, I'd think. I can't think of a good reason to keep a soldier on an orbital station unless you were moving him somewhere. So... perhaps he rejoined with Humanity at some point? It's possible that Cortana or he could have the clout to requisition a war vessel to get him to Earth. Or, that he might hitch a ride. The Admiral does say that "the entire fleet" (remaining) is there to defend Earth.

*** Folded in, inside the Earther formation, and close to a gravity well.

*** orbitals = assault carriers -

It seems to me that the admiral set up a kill-zone in space... an interdiction point, where a portion of his fleet can concentrate its fire, while the rest can maintain a perimeter. Not to sound arrogant, but it's what I might try to do.

And then, at the very beginning of the movie, a lower-grade officer complains that the Covenant just "folded in" (appeared out of hyperspace), inside their own formation... inside the perimeter they set up around the Earth. And pretty close to the Earth. (Most sci-fi "bibles" -- rulebooks created by authors to maintain consistency from one part of a story to another -- consider it difficult or dangerous to go into or out of hyperspace near a gravity well)

The orbitals, to me, seem to be one and the same with the Covenant assault-carriers... in orbit. It's true that we don't see anything obviously emanating from the carriers, but what else would be bombing the hell out of the Earth? It's possible that these ships are really, really big. Or that their munitions are small and efficient. An antimatter bomb, for example, would technically not need to be all that big or complicated... just large enough to maintain a chunk of antimatter, floating in the center of vacum. (via an electromagnetic field) Impacting the surface could be powerful enough to overcome the field and make contact between the antimatter and the container's inner surface.

The General directing ops on the ground is screaming for the Admiral to keep the pressure off his forces from orbit... and the Admiral is responding that he can't afford to strip from his perimeter. Things are going very poorly. In fact... I wonder if Bungie might have overdone it a little... it really doesn't look like there's much to save, by the time the Master Chief is on the scene. In fact, he's probably going to have to take out a series of targets, as with Halo 1, which will take time. The Covenant, in the mean-time, are seeking annihilation and not occupation. That makes things much simpler for them.

You also have to wonder how this fits into the Marathon universe now. Halo is supposedly set some centuries preceding the events of Marathon... but now, the fact that there is no mention of Earth being near-obliterated...? (After the loss of numerous colony-worlds, no less) I don't know, have they decided to make this an alternate universe or something?

:

Yeah... same voice. Bungie does tend to re-use their voice talent, and the Keyes voice was probably too command-like to lose. I even gave a little bit of thought to cloning... cloning the Admiral or, more likely, cloning Cortana. She is software, after all, so could there be more than one copy of her in the Human fleet? Perhaps an original on Earth, and a copy that went with the PoA? Before anyone objects, yes: the book by Eric Nylund cites Cortana to only be a copy of the doctor who ran the program to create Master Chief and his comrades. I'm just trying to think of some possible (plausible?) reason why the Admiral would be reacting to Cortana that way. Perhaps the answer is that Bungie could have done some better writing for the movie?

"The entire fleet is engaged Cortana... With respect, what the hell sort of reinforcement have you got?"

The fact that he used "with respect" suggests that Cortana holds some position of power in the military heirarchy. We saw that she was effectively the PoA's executive officer. (Second in command)

:

: starting with the MWNY '99 trailer. I think it's inevitable
: that at some point, each successive work will have less

It's nice... I wanted more, but I suppose that this is a good first taste. Thing is... their game is still a good 15 months away by the current, best estimate. I figure that Bungie is probably MUCH more confident in this release date than they were with the Halo 1 announcement. Halo 1's dev-cycle stretched out much longer than originally anticipated, and I expect that Bungie is even more concerned about avoiding overhype and, worse, hype-fatigue... which occurs with extended development times. You all know how that goes.... a game looks or sounds absolutely fabulous, but the overriding question becomes: when the hell is it finally getting here, and by the time it does, will other games be better? It happens much more than it should, but game developers want to garner interest, build up potential sales, and perhaps seek investors.

:

The audio (music and effects) is probably one of the most amazing parts of Halo... and one of the most undervalued. Marty has a vision.

Honestly... this is one of the things that Lucas did right, back when he did Star Wars and still had some genius. He dispensed with electronic music, and wanted a full-fledged, symphonic score for his movie. Something that would truly move people's emotions.

:
: 7) While it may mean nothing, the dialogue between Cortana

Mmmm... possibly. Seemed to me, though, that Cortana was sticking in MC's head. Personally, if I were an AI construct, I might consider that the safest place to be until the Halo franchise runs dry, and then I'd try to shift my place of residence to the nearest converted martian moon.

:

How about just overpopulation and hyperurbanization? There's also that devices continue to become smarter and smaller... I'd be willing to entertain the idea that clothing of the future could and would keep us somewhat more comfortable within a wider variance of meteorological extremes. That doesn't seem to make any sense. From the dialogue in the PoA cutscene, this was the first time this had been done-- she remarks with surprise the similarity between our architecture and the Autumn's. If the MC was designed specifically for that purpose, she'd hardly have been surprised.

I haven't had a chance to read FoR yet, but I'd always assumed that the MC's augmentations go far beyond having a chip in his head. If not, why are we able to singlehandedly survive levels like 343GS and the Library, when Cortana isn't there to help us?

his agumentations were to his bones to make him stronger and to his muscles to make him stronger and to his brain to make him faster. there is other stuff like improved healing. the thing that makes him a cyborg is his suit. the only mechanical thing in him is his brain implant but when he puts his suit on it links his brain to his suit to improve his reflexes even more and that is why he may be considered a cyborg with his suit on but without it hes just a freakishly strong and fast human.

In reply to: Re: What does the trailer show us about Halo 2?

it has been quite a long time since i read FoR but from what i remember. there was something like 60 spartan II's left by time they were ready to get the physical enhancements. they grafted some type of super strong metal to their bones, making them seemingly indestructible... only 30 survived the process unscathed. they also got muscle and brain enhancements, which included injections of some sort and i forget what else... perhaps that was it. then when they had the addition of the suits, they were basically lightning quick, with super strength. the suit does not react to their movements, it acts directly with their neurological impulses... therefore when the brain sends the message to move ur arm, the suit did it instantly, not waiting for ur arm to start the movement.

thats all i can remember.

: 1 would lead us to believe. And anyway, do we have any
: indication that the Flood could somehow follow him to Earth?
: (Hitch a ride on his spacecraft, perhaps? Very
: Aliens. )

Well, supposedly they are intelligent in their own right. GS says in the Library that they are attempting to repair "your vessel", which I assume means the PoA. In Keyes it seems as if they are attempting to use that Covenant cruiser to escape from Halo.

Here's an interesting thought on something I hadn't examined earlier.

Let's assume the Flood are intelligent. Intelligent enough to know they need to get off Halo, and to have the technical knowledge to do so.

Do they know what Halo is? Do they know WHY they need to escape?

If so... why don't they HELP us destroy the pulse generators?

GS says the Flood are intelligent. And they've been cooped up on that ring longer than us or the Covenant. Why don't they know its true nature then?

:
: There is the strange fascination that Guilty Spark
: had with Human history... perhaps foreshadowing to a deeper
: connection between Humans and the Flood? This reminds me an
: awful lot of Niven's connection between Humans and the Pak,
: which are considered one of the most dangerous races in
: Known Space.

Actually, I always interpreted that line to mean that GS has a "gap" in his memory. From the E3 '00 movie, Pvt Wang tells us that Halo has been dormant for some 100,000 years. While I know that's not the same as in-game evidence, it makes sense to assume that nothing much has been happening on Halo for a long time. Given that, there'd be no reason for GS to be awake and active.

There are also no indications that GS has any connections to the outside world. To wit: he never ONCE refers to the Covenant by name. Nor does he seem to know who they are. Which is odd, given that Halo holds religious significance to THEM (perhaps a case of mistaken identity?) In the library, GS refers to them as "the other species on the ring".

So, basically, GS wakes up one day, knowing that a large span of time has passed, but has no idea what has gone on during that period. Access to the PoA's computers gives him what he refers to as "human history"-- which covers a period of time within his gap. This makes him happy. I honestly don't think this indicates any Halo-Forerunner-Human connection of any kind, although there might be one.

:
: As far as a third party, beyond the Covenant... it made
: things interesting last time, but Bungie may have come up
: with some better tactical challenges with the Covenant. I'm
: certain we haven't seen all that the Covies have to offer,
: yet, and so it may be interesting enough with them...
: However, I still expect Bungie to toss in some fascinating
: twists. Perhaps alien technology somewhere on the Earth.
: Perhaps we'll finally find out why they've got a beef with
: us in the first place.

That would be interesting. I always wondered if the religious war elements of the game were toned down from earlier conceptions of the story.

And, of course, after last year I wonder if those parts of the plot are also being examined carefully.

: The General directing ops on the ground is screaming for
: the Admiral to keep the pressure off his forces from
: orbit... and the Admiral is responding that he can't afford
: to strip from his perimeter. Things are going very poorly.
: In fact... I wonder if Bungie might have overdone it a
: little... it really doesn't look like there's much to save,
: by the time the Master Chief is on the scene. In fact, he's
: probably going to have to take out a series of targets, as
: with Halo 1, which will take time. The Covenant, in the
: mean-time, are seeking annihilation and not occupation. That
: makes things much simpler for them.

I wonder about that, too. The pace of the game will certainly be much faster (flaming ninjas) if we have to board successive cruisers singlehandedly to disable them.

Ugh... I just had a nasty thought. The easiest way out of this is to postulate some achilles' heel in the Covenant command structure-- one of those cheesy, "kill the leader / hive queen" type thing that gives the Human side an instant win.

Hope they don't do that.

:
: You also have to wonder how this fits into the Marathon
: universe now. Halo is supposedly set some centuries
: preceding the events of Marathon... but now, the fact that
: there is no mention of Earth being near-obliterated...?
: (After the loss of numerous colony-worlds, no less) I don't
: know, have they decided to make this an alternate universe
: or something?

I think they've decided there IS no real connection. Although those Covie cruisers look like Marathon symbols upside down...

According to The Fall of Reach, that is exactly what Project Mjolnir was supposed to do. The Master Chief and his Spartans were just beginning their mission to capture a Covenant vessel and take it to their homeworld to find and capture a leader when Reach was attacked.

The book also mentions that there was another group of spartans in training somewhere, and by the time the MC returns to earth, they might be fully trained and ready to go. That also might explain the new suit the MC has.

Just a couple thoughts.

in response to the previous statement about more spartans in training... id have to say that either that is true, or that others survived besides the MC (yes it is seemingly improbable, bot not impossible, if u read the book). cortana says, in the new trailer, that there "are" (plural) "reinforcements" (plural) on the spoke. now imho, i dont think she is referring to herself and the MC as 2 people, so are there more somewhere?... it would be just like the chief to send his other spartans to do something important while he goes solo on the seemingly suicidal mission. (perhaps with the memory of losing other spartans, he wants to do the suicidal part himself).

i dunno, just a thought.

Yeah, but they never said WHAT they were going to do with the captured leader. It's like Star Wars, if you'll pardon the analogy - they didn't know WHAT they'd find from the Death Star's specs, but they hoped it would be something useful, some weakness.

Same deal. Which always bothered me a little - because if they somehow DO manage to capture a Covie demigod, take it home, and find out nothing particularly useful... that's quite a climax, eh?

Har, I just found that amusing. 'S okay... none of us are perfect, but then, I also find myself irritated by hordes of spelling and grammatical errors. Especially in a day and age when spelling and grammar programs are ubiquitously available to anyone who wants to post on the 'Net.

And no offense to our original author here... but Spht is right. When the only thing people have to judge you on is the text from your post, they tend to extrapolate that into a whole picture of you. As far as whether it's fair or not... it's perfectly fair to compare competing products. The single advantage that the PS2 really has, of any practical value, is its multitude of games. But then, if the Xbox had preceded the PS2 by x number of months, (12-18 months?) it probably would have had a numerical advantage there, too.

If that were true, one would expect the Xbox to have as many games (and as large an installed base) as the PS2 X months after it's launch. However, I think if you look at those numbers, the Xbox falls short. The PS2 has more games. The PS2 always had more games. It always will have more games. And that's probably true without considering the PS2's OTHER advantage here, which is PS1 compatibility. There was no Xbox -1 to be compatible with.

I like my Xbox as much as the next guy, but I'm continually flummoxed by those with some strange kind of faith that someday the Xbox will overcome the PS2's absolutely massive advantage in installed base, despite the fact that in nearly every geographical region, the PS2 *widens* its sales advantage on the Xbox every month. In Japan the numbers are particularly dismal-- I think the only reason for MS to continue there at all is to set things up for the Xbox2.

This is redundant, as this is pretty clear cut, but Covenant never use conventional weapons. As far as ordinance, they use plasma torpedoes, and for DEWs they use these lightning cannon attacks that rip ships to shreds in one shot.

I heard 'you', but either way I think it is an unspectacular detail.

:
Yeah, yeah. The new suit is very nice. I noticed that the faceplate actually REFLECTED the ship bulkheads. Very nice!

: #4: Yes, these arn't new ships they are the same as in
: this "HALO"(look UP! in level 3)
:
That is true, but these are (1) multiple carriers involoved, and (2) carriers that haven't been softened up as the one in Halo had been.

Well, I do believe he was just referring to the fact that he will always be fighting the Covenant, although there are more flood on other Halos.

Yes, there are more Halos. If you have read the book The Fall of Reach, you will also note that there was a map(of sorts) to that particular Halo, but that the Covenant had long been searching for it. ie: The Covenant was looking for the Halo.

: #6: HAY!!!,IF 'MC'borads a SHIP the only way hes getting
: off is by alien space fighter!!!( OOOH YEAH!!) now thats
: what I'm talkin'bout!
:
Actually, not neccessarily. The whole boarding process(which I am very psyched about!) has been detailed in the book The Fall of Reach. They basically jumped out a hole in the ship after planting a nuke in it and then waited for pick up.

all that should matter is, hey its just showing the new graphics and gun, and that m.c. is fighting covies again. There are going to be new weapons, vechiles, covies, lets be happy for that. Remember we have a year to wait, the less we know the better i think it is.We dont want to know all of a new game without playing. The flood live on other halos or else the wouldn't have talked about more being out there,
if their in this one i'll be disappointed unless they give a good reason how the flood got to earth.
